CHAPTER 14 — THE CHILDREN BENEATH BENNETT HOUSE

Bennett House stood at the edge of the city like a forgotten monument.
The mansion had been abandoned for nearly two decades.
Its windows were dark.
Its gardens had become wild.
The iron gates were covered in rust.
Yet when Nathan's convoy stopped outside at 2:17 in the morning, every light inside the mansion came on at once.
Grace stared through the windshield.
“Someone knew we were coming.”
Nathan opened the door.
“Or someone wants us to think they did.”
Reeves stepped out behind him.
“That's exactly what worries me.”
Claire climbed from the second vehicle.
The four girls followed.
Lily held Emma's hand.
Elena held Ava's.
Ava looked toward the mansion.
“He's inside.”
Nathan crouched beside her.
“Who?”
“Grandpa.”
“Which one?”
Ava pointed at the house.
“The one who cries.”
Nathan exchanged a look with Grace.
“The one who cries?”
Ava nodded.
“He doesn't like the dark.”
Nathan stared at the mansion.
That was the first thing about the night that genuinely frightened him.
A man who could manipulate corporations, bloodlines, governments, and entire families shouldn't be afraid of the dark.
Unless the dark contained something he couldn't control.
The front door opened before they reached it.
Nathan immediately raised his weapon.
No one appeared.
Only a narrow hallway beyond.
Grace whispered:
“It's inviting us in.”
Nathan shook his head.
“Then let's disappoint him.”
He walked around the house.
The exterior was sealed.
Every window had been reinforced from the inside.
Reeves examined the foundation.
“There's something beneath us.”
Nathan looked at him.
“How deep?”
“Can't tell.”
Ava suddenly walked toward the door.
Nathan caught her hand.
“No.”
She looked up.
“He wants me.”
“That's why you're staying with me.”
Ava shook her head.
“No.”
Then she pointed toward the entrance.
“He wants all of us.”
The four girls looked at each other.
Lily suddenly stepped forward.
“I'll go.”
Grace immediately stopped her.
“No.”
Lily looked at her mother.
“I can hear him.”
Nathan frowned.
“Hear who?”
Lily pointed at the mansion.
“The children.”
Silence.
Grace's face changed.
“What children?”
Lily whispered:
“They're crying.”
Nathan entered first.
The others followed.
The moment they stepped inside, the door slammed shut.
The lights flickered.
A recording began playing through hidden speakers.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Measured.
Almost fatherly.
“Welcome to Bennett House.”
Nathan recognized it.
Matthew Bennett.
Grace's father.
Nathan's biological father.
The man everyone believed dead.
The recording continued:
“If you are hearing this, then the four children have survived.”
Grace whispered:
“Dad.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Keep listening.”
“You will probably hate me.”
Grace's eyes filled.
“You should.”
Nathan clenched his jaw.
“I made decisions no parent should ever make.”
The lights came on.
A photograph appeared on the wall.
Matthew.
Standing beside Alexander.
Beside Claire.
Beside Eleanor.
And behind them—
a row of children.
Dozens.
Nathan stared.
“Twenty-three.”
Claire nodded.
“The original children.”
Matthew's voice continued:
“They were never intended to become heirs.”
Nathan frowned.
“Then what were they?”
The answer came immediately.
“Witnesses.”
Grace froze.
“Witnesses to what?”
The recording continued:
“The Bennett family discovered that Alexander was creating a private network of genetic heirs.”
Nathan stared at the photograph.
“But why?”
“Because he wanted to ensure that no government, corporation, or court could ever seize his assets.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“He created children as insurance.”
“Yes.”
Grace whispered:
“Monsters.”
Matthew continued:
“But there was a problem.”
The photograph changed.
A medical report appeared.
“The children began remembering.”
Nathan frowned.
“Remembering what?”
“The experiments.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“They saw everything.”
Grace looked at her.
“What did they see?”
“Everything.”
A hidden door opened.
A stairway descended.
Nathan stared into the darkness.
Reeves turned on his flashlight.
“We're going down.”
Grace grabbed Nathan's arm.
“What if it's a trap?”
“It is.”
“Then why go?”
“Because there are children down there.”
Grace nodded.
They descended.
One floor.
Two.
Three.
The temperature dropped.
The walls became concrete.
Medical equipment appeared.
Old examination rooms.
Empty beds.
Rusty restraints.
Grace stopped.
“Oh my God.”
Nathan looked around.
“This place was operational.”
Claire nodded.
“For years.”
“How long?”
“Twenty years.”
Nathan stared.
“How did nobody find this?”
“Money.”
“Security?”
“Money.”
“People?”
“Money.”
Nathan shook his head.
“This is where the fortune came from.”
Claire looked at him.
“Partly.”
“What else?”
Claire pointed farther down.
“Go.”
They reached a large steel door.
A fingerprint scanner sat beside it.
Ava walked forward.
Nathan stopped her.
“No.”
Ava looked up.
“It's okay.”
She placed her hand against the scanner.
The light turned green.
The door opened.
Everyone froze.
Beyond it was a huge underground chamber.
Twenty-three rooms.
Twenty-three doors.
Each with a name.
Grace walked slowly past them.
She read the first.
SUBJECT 01 — MICHAEL
Second.
SUBJECT 02 — SARAH
Third.
SUBJECT 03 — DAVID
Her voice shook.
“How many?”
Claire answered:
“Twenty-three.”
Nathan walked farther.
The final four rooms were different.
Their names were written clearly.
LILY
EMMA
ELENA
AVA
Grace stopped.
“They planned all four.”
Nathan stared at the rooms.
“But they weren't raised here.”
“No.”
“Where were they?”
“Different families.”
“Why?”
“To test environmental influence.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“They separated them.”
“Yes.”
“To see which personality developed.”
“Yes.”
Grace whispered:
“They turned my daughters into an experiment.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed toward the first twenty-three rooms.
“They turned children into an experiment.”
A sound came from Room 7.
A knock.
Everyone froze.
Another knock.
Nathan approached.
“Who's there?”
A small voice answered.
“Don't open it.”
Nathan stopped.
“Why?”
“Because he's watching.”
“Who?”
“Matthew.”
Grace stepped forward.
“Dad?”
Silence.
Then:
“He isn't your father anymore.”
Grace's eyes filled.
“What does that mean?”
The child inside whispered:
“He became something else.”
Nathan looked at Claire.
“What is happening?”
Claire's face had gone pale.
“I thought they were gone.”
“Who?”
“The children.”
“They're here.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“Not physically.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“The system.”
She pointed toward the ceiling.
“These aren't rooms.”
“What are they?”
“Memory chambers.”
Nathan stared.
“The children aren't actually here.”
Claire nodded.
“They're recordings.”
Grace looked horrified.
“All of them?”
“Yes.”
Nathan approached Room 7.
“Then who is talking?”
Claire looked at him.
“The system.”
A cold voice came through the speakers.
“Correct.”
Everyone turned.
The screens lit up.
A face appeared.
Matthew Bennett.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
Grace stopped breathing.
“Dad.”
Matthew looked directly into the camera.
“Hello, Grace.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere you cannot reach.”
“Why?”
“Because I had to finish what I started.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“You created the children.”
Matthew looked at him.
“No.”
“You used them.”
“Yes.”
“You erased our memories.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed our families.”
Matthew closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Nathan's voice hardened.
“Why?”
Matthew answered:
“To stop Alexander.”
Nathan frowned.
“You worked with him.”
“I infiltrated him.”
Grace shook her head.
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“You let me think I killed Claire.”
“Yes.”
Grace's voice broke.
“Why?”
“Because if Victoria believed Claire was dead, she would stop hunting her.”
Claire stepped forward.
“You could have told me.”
“I couldn't.”
“You could have trusted me.”
“I did.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“You trusted the plan.”
Matthew looked at her.
“Yes.”
Nathan stared at the screen.
“You said Alexander was the enemy.”
“He was.”
“Then why did you work with him?”
“Because I needed access.”
“To what?”
“The original trust.”
Nathan frowned.
“What did you discover?”
Matthew's face changed.
“That the trust wasn't created by Alexander.”
Nathan froze.
“Who created it?”
“The Bennett matriarch.”
Grace stared.
“My grandmother.”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“To protect the family from men like Alexander.”
Nathan shook his head.
“Then why all the children?”
Matthew answered:
“Because the trust required a bloodline large enough to survive assassination.”
Grace stared.
“They weren't experiments.”
“Not originally.”
“What happened?”
“Alexander corrupted the program.”
Nathan looked at Claire.
“He turned protection into control.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you stop him?”
“I tried.”
“How?”
“I created the fourth generation.”
Nathan stared.
“The girls.”
“Yes.”
“To destroy the system?”
Matthew nodded.
“They were never designed to control the trust.”
“Then what?”
“To free it.”
Nathan frowned.
“How?”
Matthew looked at the camera.
“By creating heirs who could refuse the inheritance.”
Grace didn't understand.
“Refuse?”
“Yes.”
“The trust was designed to pass to the children.”
“No.”
Matthew smiled sadly.
“It was designed to give them a choice.”
Nathan froze.
“What choice?”
“To keep the fortune…”
Matthew paused.
“…or destroy it.”
Silence.
Grace looked at Nathan.
“What happens if they destroy it?”
“Every asset connected to the trust becomes public.”
Nathan understood.
“The empire disappears.”
“Yes.”
“The money goes to hospitals, schools, shelters, and public foundations.”
“Yes.”
“Then why would Alexander fight so hard to control it?”
“Because he spent his entire life believing power was more valuable than freedom.”
Nathan stared at the screen.
“And Victoria?”
Matthew's face darkened.
“She wants the trust destroyed.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because she believes that if the trust disappears, she can rebuild the empire from the ashes.”
Grace whispered:
“That's why she wanted the children dead.”
“Yes.”
Ava suddenly stepped forward.
“Grandpa.”
Matthew looked at her.
His expression softened.
“Ava.”
She smiled.
“You found us.”
“Yes.”
“You promised.”
“I kept my promise.”
Nathan stared.
“You know her.”
Matthew nodded.
“She was the first child I saved.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because you weren't ready.”
“I was her father.”
“I know.”
“You took my daughter.”
“To keep her alive.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“You don't get to make that decision.”
Matthew lowered his eyes.
“You're right.”
That admission stunned Nathan.
Matthew continued:
“I made too many decisions for everyone.”
Grace whispered:
“And now?”
“Now I want you to make your own.”
The screen changed.
A map appeared.
Hundreds of locations.
Nathan stared.
“What are those?”
“Assets.”
“How many?”
“Eight hundred and fourteen.”
Grace looked at him.
“Eight hundred fourteen?”
“Companies. Properties. Accounts. Foundations.”
Nathan stared.
“That's the entire Bennett network.”
“Yes.”
“And the Cole fortune.”
“Yes.”
“And the Ashford assets.”
“Yes.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“Victoria has been stealing from all three.”
“Yes.”
“Where is the money?”
Matthew smiled.
“Hidden.”
“Where?”
“Everywhere.”
Nathan shook his head.
“That's not an answer.”
“It is.”
The screen displayed a list.
Hospitals.
Universities.
Orphanages.
Food banks.
Research centers.
Shelters.
Thousands of small organizations.
Nathan stared.
“You've been distributing the money.”
Matthew nodded.
“Quietly.”
“Why?”
“To make it impossible to seize.”
Grace understood.
“You turned the fortune into public infrastructure.”
“Yes.”
Nathan stared at the screen.
“Then Victoria can't own it.”
“No.”
“Alexander can't.”
“No.”
“I can't.”
“No.”
Matthew looked at the four girls.
“They can.”
Suddenly the entire facility shook.
An explosion.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Reeves shouted:
“Everyone down!”
Another explosion.
The lights went red.
Matthew's face changed.
“They found you.”
Nathan raised his weapon.
“Who?”
Matthew answered:
“Victoria.”
Grace grabbed the girls.
“Where?”
“Outside.”
Nathan looked toward the tunnel.
“How many?”
“Enough.”
Reeves checked his radio.
“We're surrounded.”
Nathan looked at Claire.
“Can we escape?”
Claire shook her head.
“Only one way.”
“Where?”
“Deeper.”
Nathan frowned.
“There's more?”
Claire nodded.
“Bennett House has seven underground levels.”
Nathan stared.
“What's on level seven?”
Claire's expression became fearful.
“The original vault.”
Matthew interrupted:
“Do not go there.”
Nathan looked at the screen.
“Why?”
“Because that's where Alexander hid the final weapon.”
“What weapon?”
Matthew's voice dropped.
“Proof.”
Nathan frowned.
“Proof of what?”
“Who actually started the children.”
Grace looked at him.
“Alexander?”
“No.”
Matthew shook his head.
“Not Alexander.”
Nathan stared.
“Then who?”
Matthew's face became pale.
“Me.”
Silence.
Grace whispered:
“You?”
Matthew nodded.
“I created the first child.”
Nathan stared.
“You were the beginning.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To save my sister.”
“Who?”
Matthew looked toward Grace.
“Your mother.”
Grace froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
Nathan's mind raced.
“Then Alexander wasn't the first.”
“No.”
“Who was?”
Matthew looked directly at Nathan.
“Your grandmother.”
Grace's face drained white.
“She started it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Matthew whispered:
“Because she wanted to bring back a child who had died.”
Nathan stared.
“What child?”
Matthew's eyes filled with tears.
“Victoria.”
Grace froze.
“Victoria was dead?”
“As a baby.”
Nathan understood.
“She created Victoria.”
“Yes.”
“Then Alexander…”
“Brought her back.”
Grace stared.
“Why?”
“Because he loved her.”
Nathan shook his head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
Matthew looked at him.
“It wasn't love.”
He paused.
“It was obsession.”
The facility shook again.
Victoria's voice came through the speakers.
“Matthew.”
Everyone froze.
Her voice was calm.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Matthew closed his eyes.
“She's here.”
Nathan raised his weapon.
“Then let her come.”
Victoria laughed.
“Oh, Nathan.”
A screen illuminated.
Victoria appeared.
She was standing inside the mansion above them.
She smiled.
“You still think you're the hero.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Where are my daughters?”
“Safe.”
“Release them.”
“No.”
“Then I'll come for you.”
Victoria smiled.
“I know.”
She looked at Grace.
“Your father told you the truth.”
Grace froze.
“What?”
“Almost.”
Victoria leaned closer to the camera.
“He never told you why your mother died.”
Grace's face changed.
“What did you say?”
Victoria smiled.
“Ask Matthew.”
Grace turned toward the screen.
“Dad?”
Matthew said nothing.
Grace's voice trembled.
“Why did Mom die?”
Matthew closed his eyes.
Victoria answered for him.
“Because he killed her.”
Grace froze.
“No.”
Victoria smiled.
“Level seven.”
Then the screen went black.
Nathan looked at Matthew.
“What happened to Grace's mother?”
Matthew remained silent.
Grace stared at him.
“Dad.”
No answer.
“Tell me.”
Matthew finally whispered:
“I didn't kill her.”
Grace's face softened.
“Then who did?”
Matthew looked toward the floor.
“Your grandmother.”
Grace stopped breathing.
“Why?”
“Because your mother discovered the children.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Matthew continued:
“She tried to expose everything.”
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“And Grandma killed her.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you stop her?”
“I tried.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I wanted you to hate the right person.”
Grace shook her head.
“You let me hate myself instead.”
Matthew's face collapsed.
“I know.”
Nathan stepped toward Grace.
She was trembling.
He took her hand.
“You're not alone.”
Grace looked at him.
Then at the girls.
Her daughters.
Her sister.
Her father.
Every generation had lied.
Every generation had suffered.
And every generation had tried to protect the next one by destroying the truth.
Nathan looked toward the tunnel.
“Level seven.”
Matthew's expression changed.
“No.”
Nathan shook his head.
“We're going.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“There's no coming back.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“We've been running our entire lives.”
He turned toward the stairs.
“Tonight, we stop.”
They descended.
Level four.
Level five.
Level six.
The air grew colder.
The walls became older.
Finally, they reached a massive steel door.
No scanner.
No keypad.
Only a handprint.
Grace stared.
“Whose hand?”
Matthew's voice came through a small speaker.
“Yours.”
Grace hesitated.
Nathan stood beside her.
“Do it.”
She placed her palm against the door.
Nothing happened.
Then Lily stepped forward.
She placed her hand beside Grace's.
The door unlocked.
Nathan stared.
“Why Lily?”
Matthew whispered:
“Because she remembers.”
The door opened.
Inside was a circular chamber.
At its center stood a glass case.
Inside—
a single file.
A photograph.
And a tiny infant bracelet.
Grace approached.
The photograph showed a baby.
A newborn girl.
On the back:
VICTORIA BENNETT.
Grace stared.
“Victoria.”
Nathan picked up the file.
The first page contained a birth certificate.
The second—
a death certificate.
The third—
a resurrection report.
Nathan's face hardened.
“Resurrection?”
Claire looked over his shoulder.
“That's impossible.”
Nathan turned the page.
A photograph of a medical laboratory.
Scientists.
Machines.
And a young Alexander.
Behind him stood Grace's grandmother.
And in the center—
a tiny infant inside an artificial incubator.
Victoria.
Nathan whispered:
“They brought her back.”
Grace stared at the document.
Then she noticed another name.
PROJECT ORIGIN — SUBJECT ZERO.
Nathan looked at her.
“Subject Zero.”
Grace nodded.
“The first child.”
A voice came from behind them.
“Yes.”
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood in the doorway.
She held a gun.
Her face was wet with tears.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Grief.
She looked at the photograph.
“I was supposed to die.”
Grace stared.
“Why didn't you?”
Victoria smiled bitterly.
“Because your grandmother couldn't accept losing me.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“You became her obsession.”
“No.”
Victoria shook her head.
“She became mine.”
Grace frowned.
“What?”
Victoria looked at her.
“Your grandmother didn't create me to save me.”
She pointed toward the files.
“She created me to prove death could be reversed.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“And the children?”
Victoria nodded.
“The children were the next step.”
Grace stared.
“They were experiments in immortality.”
Victoria smiled.
“Exactly.”
Nathan felt sick.
“What did they do to them?”
Victoria's eyes shifted toward the girls.
“Nothing yet.”
“Yet?”
Victoria raised the gun.
“Because the final experiment hasn't begun.”
Nathan stepped in front of the children.
“You're not touching them.”
Victoria smiled.
“I don't have to.”
She pressed a button.
The vault doors locked.
A countdown appeared.
PROJECT ORIGIN — FINAL PHASE
ACTIVATION IN 05:00
Grace stared.
“What is that?”
Victoria whispered:
“The moment you've all been running from.”
Nathan looked at Matthew's files.
“Stop it.”
Victoria shook her head.
“Only one person can.”
“Who?”
Victoria looked at Grace.
“Your mother.”
Grace froze.
“My mother is dead.”
Victoria smiled.
“No.”
She pointed behind Grace.
A hidden door opened.
An elderly woman stepped out.
Grace's breath stopped.
The woman looked at her.
“Hello, Grace.”
Grace couldn't speak.
Claire whispered:
“Mom?”
The woman smiled.
And behind her stood a terrified little girl.
A fifth child.
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“The final heir.”
Nathan stared.
“What is her name?”
The old woman answered:
“Hope.”
The countdown continued.
04:12
04:11
04:10
Grace looked at the fifth child.
Then at Victoria.
Then at her mother.
And finally at Nathan.
For the first time, Nathan understood.
The four children weren't the end.
They were only the beginning.
May you like
And the fifth child had been hidden because she carried something none of them possessed.
The ability to end the bloodline forever.
