CHAPTER 13 — THE MEMORY THAT LIED

Rain hammered the windshield as Nathan drove toward Cole Meridian Holdings.

The city blurred beyond the glass.

Streetlights stretched into golden lines.

No one spoke.

Grace sat beside him, staring at her trembling hands.

In the back seat, Lily, Emma, Elena, and Ava sat together under Claire's watch.

Reeves followed in a second vehicle.

Nathan kept both hands on the wheel.

Finally, Grace whispered:

“I did it.”

Nathan glanced at her.

“You don't know that.”

“I saw the video.”

“You saw a recording.”

“It was me.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me inject Claire.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you still sitting beside me?”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“Because I know you.”

Grace looked away.

“Do you?”

“I thought I did.”

She closed her eyes.

“I don't deserve your trust.”

Nathan answered quietly:

“Maybe not.”

Grace looked at him.

“But you deserve the chance to remember.”

She swallowed.

“What if I really tried to kill her?”

“Then we'll deal with it.”

“And if I hurt the children?”

“You didn't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because they're alive.”

Grace stared at him.

Nathan continued driving.

“And because Claire is sitting behind us.”

Grace turned.

Claire met her eyes.

“I know you didn't mean to hurt me.”

Grace's lips trembled.

“You don't know that.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because I remember what happened.”

Grace stared.

“What?”

Claire looked toward Nathan.

“Victoria showed you part of the truth.”

Grace frowned.

“Part?”

Claire nodded.

“The video was real.”

Grace's heart dropped.

“But the story wasn't.”

Cole Meridian rose above the city like a black monument.

Forty-eight floors of glass and steel.

The building belonged to Nathan.

Or at least it had.

Tonight, it felt like enemy territory.

As the vehicles stopped, security gates opened automatically.

Nathan frowned.

“Who authorized that?”

Reeves came through his earpiece.

“Nobody.”

Nathan stepped out.

“Then we're already compromised.”

The lobby was empty.

No receptionists.

No security guards.

No employees.

Only silence.

Grace looked around.

“This place is never empty.”

Nathan nodded.

“Exactly.”

The elevator doors opened.

No one had touched the button.

A message appeared on the display.

FLOOR 49.

Nathan stared.

“There is no forty-ninth floor.”

A second message appeared.

THERE IS NOW.

Claire whispered:

“Victoria.”

Nathan stepped inside.

Everyone followed.

The doors closed.

The elevator began rising.

Nathan frowned.

The numbers continued.

Grace stared at the display.

“Your building doesn't have those floors.”

“I know.”

The elevator stopped at 57.

The doors opened.

A corridor stretched before them.

White walls.

Glass doors.

No furniture.

No signs.

At the end stood Victoria.

She wore a black dress.

No weapon.

No visible fear.

She smiled.

“You came.”

Nathan stepped out.

“Where is Claire?”

Victoria looked behind him.

“She came with you.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“Where are my daughters?”

Victoria smiled.

“They're exactly where I want them.”

Grace stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

Victoria looked at her.

“You.”

Grace froze.

Nathan moved in front of her.

“No.”

Victoria laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

Nathan raised his weapon.

“Explain.”

Victoria pointed toward the wall.

A screen illuminated.

A live image appeared.

A hospital room.

Claire lay unconscious.

A machine tracked her heartbeat.

Nathan's face hardened.

“That's not live.”

Victoria smiled.

“No.”

She pressed a button.

The screen changed.

Another room.

Claire stood there.

Alive.

Unrestrained.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Grace.”

Grace's breath caught.

“Claire?”

Claire shook her head.

“Don't trust her.”

Victoria smiled.

“She always says that.”

Nathan stared at the screen.

“Where is the real Claire?”

Victoria answered:

“Five floors below.”

Nathan's expression changed.

“You brought us here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you finally brought me the key.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

Victoria nodded.

“Her.”

Grace shook her head.

“I don't have anything.”

“You do.”

“What?”

“Memory.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Your father left something inside you.”

Grace stared.

“My father is dead.”

“Yes.”

“And he never told me anything.”

“He couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew you would forget.”

Grace's face changed.

“Forget what?”

Victoria smiled.

“Your wedding.”

Nathan frowned.

“What wedding?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Yours.”

Silence.

Grace stared.

“What?”

Victoria laughed softly.

“You and Nathan were married.”

Nathan froze.

“No.”

Victoria pointed at Grace.

“Ask her.”

Nathan turned toward Grace.

Grace shook her head.

“I don't remember.”

Victoria smiled.

“Exactly.”

The screen changed.

A wedding photograph appeared.

Nathan in a black suit.

Grace in a white dress.

Claire beside them.

Daniel in the background.

Eleanor.

Victoria.

Alexander.

Everyone.

Nathan stared.

“That isn't real.”

Victoria smiled.

“It happened.”

Grace's breathing became uneven.

She touched her temple.

Something flickered.

Music.

Flowers.

Nathan's hand around hers.

A priest.

A ring.

A promise.

Then—

Blood.

Grace gasped.

Nathan caught her.

“What did you see?”

She stared at him.

“You said…”

“What?”

“You said you loved me.”

Nathan's face changed.

“I do.”

“No.”

Grace shook her head.

“You said it before.”

Victoria smiled.

“Now you're remembering.”

Nathan turned toward her.

“What did you do to us?”

Victoria answered calmly:

“Nothing.”

She walked toward the screen.

“Your memories were altered before I ever met you.”

“By whom?”

“Alexander.”

Nathan clenched his jaw.

“Why?”

“Because you discovered the children.”

Grace whispered:

“I knew about Lily.”

“Yes.”

“I knew about Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Emma?”

“Yes.”

“Ava?”

Victoria nodded.

“You knew everything.”

Grace stared.

“Then why did I forget?”

Victoria looked at Nathan.

“Because Nathan asked you to.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

Victoria smiled.

“Ask him.”

Grace turned.

Nathan stared at her.

“I don't remember.”

Victoria laughed.

“Of course you don't.”

A door opened behind them.

Daniel walked out.

Nathan immediately raised his weapon.

“You knew.”

Daniel looked at Grace.

“I knew.”

“You were at our wedding.”

“Yes.”

“You helped erase our memories.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Grace stared.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Nathan.

“Because your life was in danger.”

Grace shook her head.

“You erased my memories without my consent.”

“You begged us to.”

Grace froze.

“I did?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you believed you were responsible for Claire's death.”

Grace's breathing stopped.

Daniel continued:

“You thought you had killed her.”

“I didn't.”

“No.”

“But the video…”

“Was real.”

Grace stared.

“Then what happened?”

Daniel looked at Nathan.

“He asked me to show you.”

Nathan nodded.

“Do it.”

Daniel took out a tablet.

He played another video.

The same scene.

Grace holding the syringe.

Claire on the bed.

But this time, the camera angle was different.

Grace injected Claire.

Claire's eyes closed.

Then another person entered.

Victoria.

She took the syringe.

She replaced it.

She injected Claire again.

Grace stared.

“What was in the second syringe?”

Daniel answered:

“Potassium chloride.”

Grace covered her mouth.

“Victoria killed her.”

“Yes.”

“But Claire survived.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the syringe was fake.”

Grace stared.

“Fake?”

Daniel nodded.

“Victoria believed she had killed Claire.”

Nathan frowned.

“Then why?”

“Because Claire was already protected.”

“By whom?”

Daniel looked toward Ava.

“Her.”

Everyone turned.

Ava stood silently.

Daniel continued:

“Claire had hidden a tracking device inside Ava's medical implant.”

Nathan stared.

“Ava was the tracker.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To locate every facility connected to Alexander.”

Grace looked horrified.

“They used a child as a tracking device.”

“No.”

Claire stepped forward.

“I chose it.”

Grace looked at her.

“You chose?”

Claire nodded.

“I knew they were coming for us.”

“And you sacrificed yourself.”

“Yes.”

“To protect them.”

“Yes.”

Grace's eyes filled.

“I thought I killed you.”

“I know.”

“I'm sorry.”

Claire embraced her.

Grace collapsed against her sister.

“I am so sorry.”

Claire whispered:

“You saved me.”

Grace pulled away.

“How?”

“You injected me with the antidote.”

Grace stared.

“I don't remember.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

Nathan watched them.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“You showed Grace only the first half.”

Victoria smiled.

“Of course.”

“You wanted her to believe she was guilty.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because guilt makes people easy to control.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“You manipulated her.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated my family.”

“Yes.”

“And now you think you'll win.”

Victoria's smile widened.

“I already did.”

The lights went out.

A red emergency glow appeared.

The elevator doors locked.

A mechanical voice announced:

TRANSFER PROTOCOL INITIATED.

Grace looked around.

“What transfer?”

Victoria looked at her.

“The trust.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“You don't have authority.”

Victoria smiled.

“I don't need it.”

The screen displayed:

BENNETT TRUST — FINAL BENEFICIARY TRANSFER

AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED

PRIMARY BLOOD KEY DETECTED

Grace's name appeared.

Nathan stepped forward.

“No.”

Victoria looked at Grace.

“Put your hand on the scanner.”

Grace didn't move.

Victoria nodded toward the screen.

A live feed appeared.

Lily.

Emma.

Elena.

Ava.

They were inside another room.

Four chairs.

Four restraints.

Grace screamed:

“No!”

Nathan raised his weapon.

“Let them go.”

Victoria smiled.

“Sign.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“Don't.”

Victoria pressed another button.

Ava cried out.

Grace flinched.

“Stop!”

Nathan shouted:

“Grace, don't!”

Victoria stared at her.

“One hand.”

Grace stepped toward the scanner.

Nathan grabbed her.

“No.”

“If I don't…”

“They're bluffing.”

Ava cried again.

Grace broke free.

“I can't risk it.”

She placed her hand on the scanner.

The machine scanned her palm.

BLOODLINE CONFIRMED.

Victoria smiled.

“Excellent.”

Nathan looked at the screen.

Then the system changed.

SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“What?”

The screen displayed:

PRIMARY BLOOD KEY: GRACE BENNETT

SECONDARY BLOOD KEY: NATHAN BENNETT

Nathan froze.

Victoria turned toward him.

“Nathan.”

He smiled.

“You forgot one thing.”

“What?”

“You need me.”

Victoria's expression hardened.

“You're not a Bennett.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

Then at the screen.

“I am.”

The system scanned him.

MATCH CONFIRMED.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.”

Nathan took Grace's hand.

“Together.”

The system began counting down.

TRANSFER IN 10…

Victoria pulled her weapon.

“Stop!”

Reeves fired.

Victoria ducked.

9…

Daniel tackled Victoria.

8…

Grace looked at Nathan.

“What happens if we complete this?”

“I don't know.”

7…

Claire shouted:

“Don't!”

Everyone stopped.

Nathan turned.

“Why?”

Claire stared at the screen.

“Look at the beneficiary.”

Nathan did.

The name wasn't Grace.

It wasn't Nathan.

It wasn't any of the children.

It was:

BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — PUBLIC PROTECTION FOUNDATION

Nathan frowned.

“What?”

Claire whispered:

“The trust doesn't go to a person.”

Grace stared.

“It goes to the children.”

Nathan understood.

“They made us think it was personal ownership.”

“Yes.”

Victoria screamed:

“No!”

6…

Victoria fired.

The bullet struck the console.

The countdown froze.

The system flashed:

SECURITY BREACH.

Victoria ran toward Grace.

Nathan intercepted her.

They fought.

Victoria struck him.

Nathan fell.

She raised the gun.

Grace tackled her.

The weapon skidded across the floor.

Victoria screamed:

“You ruined everything!”

Grace hit the emergency button.

Steel shutters dropped.

Victoria was trapped.

Nathan stood.

Blood ran from his forehead.

Grace looked at him.

“Are you okay?”

He smiled.

“Ask me after we save the girls.”

They found the children two floors below.

The room was empty.

No restraints.

No guards.

Only four chairs.

And a speaker.

Victoria's voice echoed:

“You're too late.”

Nathan looked around.

“Where are they?”

Claire checked the tracker.

“Moving.”

“Where?”

“Roof.”

Nathan ran.

They reached the rooftop.

Wind tore across the building.

The children stood near the edge.

A helicopter hovered above.

A man held Elena.

Nathan recognized him.

Adrian.

But Adrian wasn't smiling.

He was terrified.

“Stay back!”

Nathan froze.

“What are you doing?”

Adrian shook his head.

“I'm trying to save them.”

“Then bring them here.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked at Victoria.

She stood inside the helicopter.

“Because she has my mother.”

Nathan's face hardened.

“Your mother is under arrest.”

Victoria smiled.

“Not yet.”

She pointed a gun at Adrian.

“Bring me the children.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I can't.”

Victoria fired.

The bullet struck the ground beside him.

Ava screamed.

Nathan stepped forward.

“Victoria!”

She looked at him.

“Give me the children.”

“No.”

“Then Adrian dies.”

Adrian whispered:

“Do it.”

Nathan stared.

“What?”

“Don't give them to her.”

Victoria aimed again.

Adrian smiled.

“I'm sorry, Nathan.”

Then he stepped backward.

And jumped.

Nathan screamed.

“ADRIAN!”

The helicopter lifted.

Victoria disappeared into the night.

Nathan ran to the edge.

Adrian was gone.

Below, emergency lights flooded the street.

Then a parachute opened.

Nathan stared.

Adrian had survived.

He landed on a lower building.

Alive.

Nathan exhaled.

Grace grabbed his arm.

“Look.”

Ava was holding something.

A small silver pendant.

Nathan recognized it.

“Where did you get that?”

Ava pointed toward the helicopter.

“Grandpa gave it to me.”

Nathan stared.

“Which grandpa?”

Ava looked toward the sky.

“The one who isn't dead.”

Nathan's blood ran cold.

“Alexander.”

“No.”

Ava shook her head.

“The other one.”

Nathan frowned.

“Who?”

Ava whispered:

“Matthew.”

Grace froze.

“Your father.”

Nathan stared.

“But Matthew Bennett is dead.”

Grace looked at him.

“Apparently not.”

The pendant suddenly opened.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

Nathan and Grace.

At their wedding.

And beneath it, handwritten words:

THE TRUTH IS UNDER BENNETT HOUSE.

Nathan looked at Grace.

“What is Bennett House?”

Grace shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Claire's face went pale.

“I do.”

Nathan turned.

“What?”

Claire whispered:

“That's where your father kept the original children.”

Nathan's blood froze.

“The original?”

Claire nodded.

“The first children.”

Grace stared.

“There were more?”

Claire looked at the pendant.

“Yes.”

“How many?”

Claire swallowed.

“Twenty-three.”

Nathan stared into the darkness.

“Then this was never about four children.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“It was about every child they ever created.”

The helicopter vanished beyond the skyline.

And Nathan finally understood.

He had spent five years running from one secret.

But the secret had been an entire generation.

May you like

And somewhere beneath Bennett House—

twenty-three children were waiting to be found.
