CHAPTER 10 — THE MAN WHO STARTED IT ALL

The darkness lasted only seven seconds.
But seven seconds was enough to change everything.
When the emergency lights finally flickered on, Nathan was already moving.
“Find the girls.”
Reeves grabbed the radio.
“Security team, sweep every floor. Lock down the building.”
Grace stood in the center of the room, pale and shaking.
“Elena.”
Nathan turned toward her.
“We'll get her.”
“She said he has her.”
“I heard.”
“He has Claire too.”
Nathan's jaw tightened.
“Then we find both of them.”
Grace looked at the screens.
The old man's voice still echoed in her head.
Welcome home, Nathan.
She whispered:
“Your real grandfather.”
Nathan looked at her.
“I don't even know who I am anymore.”
Grace stepped closer.
“You're Nathan.”
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
“Everyone has lied to me.”
Grace shook her head.
“I haven't.”
Nathan looked into her eyes.
“No.”
A pause.
“You lied about Lily.”
Grace flinched.
“I was trying to protect her.”
“I know.”
“But I still lied.”
Nathan nodded.
“And now I need you to promise me something.”
“What?”
“Whatever we discover…”
He took her hand.
“…don't protect me from it.”
Grace stared at him.
“I promise.”
Reeves approached.
“We have movement.”
Nathan released Grace's hand.
“Where?”
“Basement.”
They ran.
The basement was empty.
No intruders.
No children.
Only a single chair in the center of the room.
On it sat a black envelope.
Nathan picked it up.
His name was written across the front.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A young woman.
Pregnant.
Standing beside a man Nathan had never seen.
The woman was his mother.
The man was elderly.
Sharp eyes.
Silver hair.
Nathan turned the photograph over.
YOUR MOTHER KNEW THE TRUTH.
Below that:
SHE CHOSE TO LIE.
Grace stared at the image.
“Who is that man?”
Nathan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Reeves examined it.
“I do.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Who?”
Reeves pointed to the man.
“Alexander Cole.”
Nathan's heart stopped.
“The founder?”
Reeves nodded.
“The man who built the original Cole fortune.”
“But he died in 1998.”
“Officially.”
Nathan stared.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Reeves looked toward the dark hallway.
“Because someone has spent thirty years making sure everyone believes it.”
Nathan opened the envelope again.
A second photograph.
This one showed Alexander standing beside a young Victoria.
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“She's related to him.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Reeves didn't answer.
Grace picked up the photograph.
“Look.”
Behind Alexander was a woman.
A younger Eleanor.
Holding a baby.
Nathan stared.
“That baby…”
Grace whispered:
“Victoria.”
Nathan felt cold.
His mother had been there.
Thirty years ago.
With Alexander.
With Victoria.
The same family that had destroyed Grace's life.
The same family that had manipulated Nathan.
It couldn't be coincidence.
A sound echoed from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Nathan raised his weapon.
“Who's there?”
No answer.
Reeves moved forward.
A figure stepped from the darkness.
Eleanor.
Nathan lowered his gun.
“Mom.”
She looked exhausted.
“Where are the children?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Daniel moved them.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“Where is Daniel?”
“Gone.”
“What do you mean gone?”
“He went after Elena.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you stop him?”
“Because I couldn't.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“You know where he went.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
“Mom.”
“I swear.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You've lied to me my entire life.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“Then give me one reason to believe you.”
She looked at him.
“Because I am finally tired of surviving.”
Nathan went silent.
Eleanor continued:
“I spent thirty years protecting a secret that should never have existed.”
“What secret?”
“You.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“My birth.”
“Yes.”
“Tell me.”
Eleanor hesitated.
“Your grandfather Alexander had two sons.”
Nathan stared.
“Daniel and Nathaniel.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel was the elder.”
“Yes.”
“Then Nathaniel was the younger.”
“Yes.”
“Which means…”
Eleanor nodded.
“Daniel was the rightful heir.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“But Alexander chose Nathaniel.”
“No.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Alexander chose you.”
Nathan froze.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel refused.”
“Refused what?”
“To become Alexander.”
Nathan frowned.
Eleanor explained:
“Alexander had built his fortune through blackmail, manipulation, and violence. Daniel wanted nothing to do with it.”
“And Nathaniel?”
“He wanted everything.”
Nathan understood.
“So my father wasn't really my father.”
“No.”
“Your husband?”
“Yes.”
“But you loved him.”
Eleanor looked away.
“Once.”
“What happened?”
“He became obsessed with becoming Alexander.”
Nathan stared.
“He copied his father's methods.”
“Yes.”
“He stole Daniel's identity.”
“Yes.”
“And mine?”
Eleanor nodded.
“He claimed you were his biological son.”
“But I wasn't.”
“No.”
“Who was my mother?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You already know.”
Nathan's eyes widened.
“Who?”
“Me.”
Nathan froze.
“What?”
“I gave birth to you.”
Nathan stared.
“Then who is my father?”
Eleanor took a breath.
“Daniel.”
Nathan couldn't speak.
It was the same answer Daniel had given.
But now it carried a different meaning.
Daniel was his biological father.
Eleanor was his biological mother.
Nathaniel had stolen him.
And Alexander had orchestrated it.
Nathan stepped backward.
“Why did you let Nathaniel raise me?”
“Because Alexander threatened Daniel.”
“With what?”
“You.”
Nathan's jaw tightened.
“He threatened to kill me.”
“Yes.”
“So Daniel disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“And Nathaniel raised me.”
“Yes.”
“To make me his heir.”
“Yes.”
Nathan looked at the photograph.
“And the Bennett bloodline?”
Eleanor nodded.
“That's where it gets complicated.”
Grace stood beside them.
“My family.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“Your grandfather was involved.”
“How?”
“Alexander and your grandfather were business partners.”
Grace's face hardened.
“What business?”
“Genetic research.”
Grace stared.
“You're talking about the children.”
“Yes.”
“They created them.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“Alexander believed blood could determine loyalty.”
Nathan frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“He wanted to create heirs who were genetically connected to multiple powerful families.”
Grace's stomach turned.
“He used us.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“Control.”
Nathan shook his head.
“This is insane.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Your grandfather wasn't trying to create an heir.”
She paused.
“He was trying to create a dynasty.”
Nathan stared.
“And I was the first.”
“Yes.”
“You were carrying me when Alexander chose Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Why me?”
“Because your DNA matched both the Cole and Bennett lines.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“How?”
Eleanor answered:
“Your grandmother was a Bennett.”
Grace's eyes widened.
“My grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“So Nathan and I…”
“Are connected through blood.”
Grace stepped backward.
Nathan stared.
“Are we related?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Not closely.”
“How?”
“Your grandmother was the sister of Nathan's maternal grandfather.”
Grace exhaled.
“So distant.”
“Yes.”
“But enough for Alexander.”
Eleanor nodded.
“He considered bloodlines assets.”
Nathan's hands curled into fists.
“My daughters.”
Eleanor's face softened.
“They were part of the final experiment.”
Grace looked horrified.
“Three children.”
“Yes.”
“Using Claire's genetic material.”
“Yes.”
“And Nathan's.”
“Yes.”
“But why three?”
Eleanor looked at Nathan.
“Because Alexander wanted redundancy.”
Grace frowned.
“Redundancy?”
“If one child died, another could inherit.”
Nathan's face went cold.
“They treated my daughters like replacements.”
“Yes.”
Grace whispered:
“They're not replacements.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked toward the hallway.
“They are witnesses.”
A phone rang.
Nathan answered.
Daniel's voice came through.
“Don't trust your mother.”
Nathan froze.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“Where is Elena?”
“She is with me.”
Nathan exhaled.
“Thank God.”
“But you need to know something.”
“What?”
“Alexander isn't the one who took her.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“Then who?”
“Victoria.”
Nathan clenched his jaw.
“She was working for Alexander.”
“No.”
“What?”
“Victoria betrayed him.”
Nathan stared.
“Why?”
“Because she wants the trust for herself.”
Nathan frowned.
“Where is Alexander?”
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“Right behind you.”
Nathan turned.
Nothing.
“Daniel?”
The call ended.
Grace looked around.
“Where?”
Reeves raised his weapon.
Then the lights flickered.
A man stepped out from a hidden doorway.
Old.
Tall.
Perfectly dressed.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
Nathan knew immediately.
Alexander Cole.
The founder.
The ghost.
The man everyone believed dead.
Alexander smiled.
“Nathan.”
Nathan raised his weapon.
“Don't come closer.”
Alexander stopped.
“You have your father's eyes.”
“Which father?”
Alexander laughed.
“Daniel.”
Nathan's grip tightened.
“You destroyed my life.”
“No.”
Alexander shook his head.
“I built it.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“I protected her.”
“You used her.”
“I protected the bloodline.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“Where is Elena?”
Alexander's expression softened.
“Safe.”
“Bring her here.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you haven't earned the right.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“She's my daughter.”
Alexander smiled.
“Exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“You still think being her father gives you authority.”
“It does.”
“Not under the trust.”
Nathan froze.
Alexander continued:
“The trust recognizes the firstborn genetic heir.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“Me.”
Alexander nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why take Elena?”
“Because she is the leverage.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“You don't need leverage.”
“I do.”
“For what?”
“To force you to open the final vault.”
Nathan frowned.
“What vault?”
Alexander smiled.
“The one your father never told you about.”
“Where?”
“Under Cole Meridian.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“The headquarters.”
“Yes.”
“What's inside?”
Alexander looked at Grace.
“Your sister.”
Grace froze.
“What?”
“Claire.”
Grace's breathing stopped.
“You said she was dead.”
“I never said that.”
Nathan stared.
“You said she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Alexander smiled.
“Below your company.”
Grace stepped forward.
“Take me there.”
Alexander shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“Claire is not a prisoner.”
“What?”
“She is the guardian.”
Grace stared.
“Guardian of what?”
Alexander's smile faded.
“The children.”
Nathan couldn't process it.
Claire had been alive.
For five years.
Under his own company.
Watching.
Waiting.
Perhaps protecting.
Alexander continued:
“She has been keeping Elena hidden from Victoria.”
Nathan frowned.
“Then why did Victoria have her?”
“She didn't.”
Nathan stared.
“Then who?”
Alexander looked at Eleanor.
“Your mother.”
Nathan turned.
Eleanor's face was devastated.
“You sent Elena away?”
Eleanor whispered:
“I had no choice.”
“You gave my daughter to Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because you were being watched.”
Nathan's voice broke.
“I would have protected her.”
“You couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because Victoria had access to your life.”
Nathan froze.
Alexander interrupted:
“Victoria isn't the mastermind.”
“Then who is?”
Alexander looked directly at Nathan.
“You are.”
Nathan stared.
“What?”
Alexander smiled.
“Everything you've done has brought you exactly where I wanted.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“You're insane.”
“No.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“I'm old.”
He smiled.
“And old men understand patience.”
Suddenly—
A gunshot.
Alexander dropped.
Grace screamed.
Nathan spun.
Victoria stood on the balcony above them.
Blood covered her sleeve.
She fired again.
Nathan pulled Grace down.
Reeves returned fire.
Victoria disappeared.
Alexander lay on the floor.
Nathan rushed to him.
“You're not dead.”
Alexander smiled weakly.
“Not yet.”
“Where is Elena?”
Alexander looked at Grace.
“Below.”
“Where?”
“Basement.”
Nathan stared.
“Which basement?”
Alexander whispered:
“The one nobody knows exists.”
Then he closed his eyes.
Nathan looked at Reeves.
“Find it.”
Reeves nodded.
They searched the walls.
Behind an old electrical panel, they found a hidden door.
A biometric scanner.
Nathan placed his hand against it.
The scanner flashed red.
Grace tried.
Red.
Reeves tried.
Red.
Nathan looked at Alexander.
“Who can open it?”
Alexander whispered:
“Claire.”
Then he smiled.
“Or her daughter.”
Grace froze.
“Which daughter?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Yours.”
Grace's eyes widened.
“Lily?”
“No.”
“Emma?”
Alexander shook his head.
“Elena.”
Nathan stared.
“She has access?”
“She was born for it.”
The door suddenly unlocked.
Everyone froze.
A small voice came from the darkness.
“Daddy?”
Nathan's heart stopped.
Elena stepped out.
Alive.
Safe.
Beside her stood Claire.
Grace's sister.
Alive.
Grace couldn't breathe.
“Claire?”
Claire looked at her.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I'm sorry.”
Grace ran toward her.
They collided in an embrace.
Five years of grief.
Five years of lies.
Five years of believing her sister was dead.
All collapsing at once.
Nathan looked at Elena.
She ran into his arms.
“Daddy.”
Nathan held her tightly.
“I've got you.”
Elena whispered:
“I knew you would come.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
For one perfect moment, everything felt right.
Then Claire stepped back.
Her expression changed.
“We have to leave.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Why?”
Claire looked toward the darkness behind them.
“Because Alexander wasn't the one who created this.”
Nathan frowned.
“Then who?”
Claire's eyes filled with fear.
“The person who funded him.”
Grace stared.
“Who?”
Claire whispered:
“Your father.”
Nathan froze.
“My father is dead.”
Claire shook her head.
“Not Nathaniel.”
“Then who?”
Claire looked at Alexander.
“He has another son.”
Nathan stared.
“Another son?”
Claire nodded.
“And he's the man who has been controlling Victoria.”
Nathan's stomach dropped.
“Who?”
Claire looked directly at him.
“Your half-brother.”
The room went silent.
Nathan whispered:
“I don't have a brother.”
Claire's expression was full of terror.
“You do.”
A slow clap echoed from the darkness.
Everyone turned.
A man stepped forward.
He looked about Nathan's age.
Same gray-blue eyes.
Same jaw.
Same unmistakable Cole features.
He smiled.
“Hello, brother.”
Nathan stared.
May you like
The man raised a gun.
“I'm the reason you were born.”
