CHAPTER 15 — THE NIGHT RICHARD FINALLY CONFESSED

The room felt smaller.
The air heavier.
Every person standing inside the Whitmore mansion was carrying a different version of the truth.
Richard.
Alexander.
Lily.
Me.
And somewhere between all those secrets…
Was the answer to one question that had haunted me for fifteen years.
Who killed Elizabeth Miller?
Alexander Whitmore stood beneath the chandelier like he owned the world.
Maybe he believed he did.
Men like Alexander were dangerous because they never saw themselves as villains.
They saw themselves as necessary.
They believed every cruel decision was justified.
Every betrayal was strategy.
Every ruined life was simply the price of success.
“You expect me to believe him?”
I asked.
Alexander smiled.
“I expect you to believe evidence.”
He turned toward Richard.
“Don’t you?”
Richard looked like he had aged ten years in seconds.
The confident billionaire heir was gone.
The man standing there looked trapped.
Lily stared at Richard.
Her voice was quiet.
“Where were you that night?”
Richard looked at her.
“Lily…”
“Answer me.”
The pain in her voice was stronger than anger.
Because she wasn’t asking as a victim.
She was asking as someone who needed to know whether everything she believed was another lie.
Richard looked down.
“I was at the Whitmore estate.”
Alexander smiled slightly.
“Interesting.”
Lily looked confused.
“But you told me you were overseas.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I lied.”
The words hit the room.
Not because it was surprising.
Because it confirmed everything Lily feared.
“Why?”
Lily asked.
“Why would you lie about something like that?”
Richard looked at her.
And for the first time…
There was shame.
“Because my father told me to.”
Alexander laughed softly.
“Always blaming someone else.”
Richard turned.
“You used me.”
Alexander’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You were weak.”
Richard stepped forward.
“You raised me to be like you.”
“No.”
Alexander’s voice became cold.
“I raised you to win.”
I watched them.
Father and son.
Two generations of the same poison.
One created the monster.
The other became it.
But there was something different about Richard.
A crack.
A weakness.
Something Alexander didn’t have.
Regret.
“Tell us what happened.”
My voice cut through the room.
Richard looked at me.
“I can’t.”
Lily’s face changed.
“You can’t?”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“Because if I tell you everything…”
He looked at Alexander.
“He’ll kill everyone who knows.”
Alexander smiled.
“Still dramatic.”
I stepped closer.
“Richard.”
He looked at me.
“You already lost everything.”
A pause.
“What are you protecting?”
That question broke something.
Because for years, Richard protected his family name.
His wealth.
His image.
But now?
There was nothing left.
Only the truth.
Richard slowly walked toward the table.
He picked up a glass of water.
His hands were shaking.
Then he spoke.
“The night Elizabeth died…”
Lily held her breath.
“I wasn’t supposed to be there.”
Silence.
“I followed her.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
Richard looked ashamed.
“Because my father wanted the information she had.”
Alexander said nothing.
And that silence confirmed everything.
Richard continued.
“Elizabeth knew about the financial network.”
“She knew about Victor.”
“She knew about my family.”
“She knew too much.”
Lily whispered:
“And you followed her?”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
Her expression broke.
“Why?”
He looked at her.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of my father?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And of what he would do if I refused.”
The room was silent.
Then I asked:
“What happened on that road?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I arrived after my father.”
Everyone froze.
Alexander’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
Richard continued.
“He was arguing with Elizabeth.”
“What were they arguing about?”
“The ledger.”
The word filled the room.
The missing evidence.
The reason everyone had been fighting.
“Elizabeth refused to give it to him.”
Richard swallowed.
“She told him Lily would never belong to people like us.”
Lily looked down.
Richard continued:
“My father got angry.”
“How angry?”
Richard looked at me.
“Angry enough that Elizabeth became afraid.”
A pause.
“She tried to leave.”
“And?”
Richard’s voice became almost a whisper.
“My father stopped her.”
The room froze.
Lily covered her mouth.
I felt something inside me break.
After fifteen years…
The truth was finally coming.
But nothing could prepare me for hearing it.
“What did he do?”
I asked.
Richard looked at Alexander.
Then answered:
“He sabotaged the car.”
Silence.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
“He made it look like an accident.”
Alexander finally spoke.
“That’s enough.”
Everyone turned.
His calm disappeared.
Only for a moment.
But it was gone.
“You’re confused.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“No.”
“I’m finally remembering.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“You think confessing makes you innocent?”
Richard looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“It makes me guilty.”
That surprised everyone.
Even me.
Richard looked at Lily.
“I hurt you.”
His voice cracked.
“I became the person I hated.”
“I blamed everyone else.”
“I told myself I was protecting the family.”
“But the truth is…”
He looked down.
“I was protecting myself.”
Lily stared at him.
There was pain in her eyes.
But also something else.
Closure.
Because sometimes the hardest truth is better than a beautiful lie.
Then Alexander made his move.
He reached inside his coat.
Security instantly reacted.
I moved.
But Alexander wasn’t reaching for a weapon.
He pulled out a small device.
A remote.
Everyone froze.
“What is that?”
I asked.
Alexander smiled.
“The final insurance policy.”
Richard’s face changed.
“No…”
“What?”
Richard whispered:
“He wouldn’t.”
Alexander looked at him.
“You always underestimated me.”
The mansion lights flickered.
Then every screen in the room activated.
Documents appeared.
Videos.
Recordings.
Photos.
But not about Alexander.
About Richard.
Abuse reports.
Financial crimes.
Private conversations.
Everything.
Alexander looked at Lily.
“You see?”
“This is why he was never worthy of you.”
Richard stared.
“You’re framing me.”
Alexander smiled.
“No.”
“I’m saving myself.”
I understood immediately.
Alexander didn’t care about Richard.
He never did.
His own son was just another shield.
If everything collapsed…
Richard would take the blame.
But then something unexpected happened.
Richard stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
He looked at Lily.
“I spent my entire life letting him decide who I was.”
A pause.
“But not anymore.”
He turned toward Alexander.
“I’m done protecting you.”
Alexander laughed.
“You think anyone will believe you?”
Richard looked at me.
Then Lily.
“Yes.”
“Because this time…”
He reached into his pocket.
And placed a small recording device on the table.
“I recorded everything.”
The room went silent.
Alexander’s face changed.
“What did you do?”
Richard answered:
“The one thing you never taught me.”
A pause.
“Take responsibility.”
The recording began.
Alexander’s own voice filled the room.
Clear.
Cold.
Admitting everything.
The manipulation.
The cover-up.
The plan.
The destruction of Elizabeth.
For the first time…
Alexander Whitmore looked afraid.
Not because he was losing money.
Not because he was losing power.
Because he was losing control of the story.
But before anyone could react…
The mansion windows shattered.
A gunshot.
Then another.
Everyone dropped.
The recording device fell.
The lights went dark.
And a voice came through the speakers.
A voice we had not heard in days.
Victor Hale.
“You all made the same mistake.”
Silence.
“You thought Alexander was the biggest threat.”
A pause.
“He was only protecting my secret.”
My blood ran cold.
Because suddenly I understood.
Alexander Whitmore wasn’t the final enemy.
He was just another piece on the board.
Victor Hale was still playing.
And he had just revealed something impossible.
Something that could destroy everything we believed.
The speaker crackled.
Victor’s final words echoed through the mansion:
May you like
“Arthur…”
“You still don’t know who really killed Elizabeth.”
