CHAPTER 14 — THE TRAITOR WHO SAT AT OUR TABLE

The Whitmore family had spent decades building one thing.
Not wealth.
Not power.
Not influence.
A reputation.
A beautiful illusion that everything behind their gates was perfect.
The perfect family.
The perfect marriage.
The perfect empire.
But illusions only survive until someone turns on the lights.
And now…
The lights were on.
The investigation into Margaret Whitmore’s death moved faster than anyone expected.
The woman who spent her life controlling everyone around her had finally lost control of the one thing she feared most.
The truth.
Her death wasn’t just a murder.
It was a message.
Someone wanted us to know they were close.
Someone wanted us to understand that even the Whitmores were not safe.
And that meant one terrifying possibility:
The person responsible was powerful enough to enter their world without suspicion.
Inside the safe house, I studied every piece of evidence.
The journal.
The recordings.
The financial records.
The witness statements.
Everything connected to one question:
Who betrayed Elizabeth?
Who knew what she discovered?
Who had enough access to destroy her?
The list was small.
Too small.
Victor Hale.
Alexander Whitmore.
Margaret Whitmore.
Richard Whitmore.
And one person nobody wanted to consider.
Lily.
She stood beside the window.
Watching the city.
Watching the world she once believed she understood disappear.
“You think it was someone in Richard’s family.”
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because the truth was painful.
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
“But who?”
I looked at the evidence.
“I don’t know yet.”
That was the hardest sentence for me to say.
Because I had spent my life knowing how to find answers.
But this time…
The answer was connected to the people I loved.
Sophia entered the room.
“We found something.”
I turned.
“What?”
She placed a folder on the table.
“Richard’s private communications from before the wedding.”
I opened it.
Emails.
Messages.
Financial agreements.
Then one message caught my attention.
A conversation between Richard and his father.
ALEXANDER: Does she know?
RICHARD: No.
ALEXANDER: Make sure she never finds out.
RICHARD: What about her father?
ALEXANDER: Arthur Miller is a problem we will handle later.
My hands tightened.
They knew.
Before the wedding.
Before Easter.
Before Lily ever became their family.
They had been planning.
Lily read the message.
Her face went pale.
“My father-in-law knew.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“And Richard?”
I looked at her.
“He knew too.”
A painful silence followed.
Because betrayal from strangers hurts.
But betrayal from someone you shared a home with…
Changes something inside you.
Then Claire noticed something.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the document.
“This date.”
“What about it?”
“This conversation happened two weeks after Elizabeth died.”
The room became silent.
Two weeks.
After my wife’s death.
After Lily lost her mother.
After I buried the woman I loved.
The Whitmores were already discussing Lily.
Already planning.
Already waiting.
My phone rang.
A secure number.
I answered.
“Arthur.”
The voice belonged to my old intelligence contact.
“We found Alexander Whitmore’s hidden records.”
“Where?”
“Private archive.”
“Send them.”
A few seconds later, files appeared.
I opened them.
And the first document made my blood freeze.
A death certificate.
Not Elizabeth’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone connected to her investigation.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
But wasn’t.
The name:
Daniel Cross.
My old friend.
The man who helped me uncover the truth.
The man who claimed to know Elizabeth’s final secret.
The man who had just spoken to me days earlier.
I stared at the document.
Impossible.
“That’s wrong.”
Sophia looked confused.
“What?”
“Daniel Cross died twelve years ago.”
Everyone froze.
Lily looked at me.
“But you talked to him.”
I nodded.
Exactly.
I immediately called the number.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then the message came.
Unknown sender.
YOU FINALLY NOTICED.
My blood went cold.
Another message appeared.
THE MAN YOU TRUSTED WAS NEVER WHO YOU THOUGHT HE WAS.
The room became silent.
Because now the question changed.
Not who betrayed Elizabeth.
But who had been manipulating us from the beginning?
We traced the phone.
The signal lasted only eight seconds.
But it was enough.
The location:
Whitmore Estate.
Again.
Always the Whitmores.
I gathered everyone.
“We go there.”
Lily looked at me.
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“Isn’t that what they want?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Which means we finally have the advantage.”
She frowned.
“How?”
“Because people who believe they are winning become careless.”
The Whitmore estate looked different when we returned.
The same mansion.
The same perfect gardens.
The same marble entrance.
But now I saw what was beneath it.
Fear.
Servants whispered.
Security guards avoided eye contact.
The empire was cracking.
Everyone knew.
Richard was waiting inside.
Alone.
That surprised me.
“Arthur.”
His voice sounded different.
No arrogance.
No confidence.
Just exhaustion.
I stared at him.
“Where is your father?”
Richard looked away.
“He left.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
I studied him.
For the first time…
I saw something unexpected.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the fear of losing money.
The fear of losing control.
“You knew about my wife.”
Richard looked down.
“Yes.”
Lily stepped forward.
“You knew about my mother?”
Richard didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Her face changed.
“You knew.”
“I didn’t know everything.”
“But you knew enough.”
Richard looked at her.
“Lily…”
“Don’t.”
Her voice was cold.
“Don’t say my name like you ever cared about me.”
The words hit him.
Because somewhere beneath everything…
Richard knew he deserved them.
I stepped closer.
“Who killed Elizabeth?”
Richard looked at me.
“I don’t know.”
“Lie.”
His expression changed.
“I’m not lying.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Richard looked around.
Lowered his voice.
“Someone in my family wanted what your wife found.”
“Who?”
He swallowed.
Then whispered:
“My mother.”
Silence.
“Margaret?”
Richard nodded.
“She knew Elizabeth discovered something.”
“She tried to get the information.”
“And when Elizabeth refused…”
He stopped.
My voice became colder.
“What happened?”
Richard looked away.
“My father handled it.”
The room went completely silent.
Because Richard had just admitted something.
Something that could destroy his entire family.
Alexander Whitmore.
Elizabeth’s death.
The hidden network.
Everything.
But before he could say more…
The lights went out.
Again.
A familiar pattern.
Darkness.
Silence.
Fear.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“You always were too emotional, Richard.”
Everyone froze.
Because we knew that voice.
Alexander Whitmore.
Alive.
Standing in the dark.
The lights returned.
And there he was.
Older.
Calm.
Untouched.
The man who had hidden for fifteen years.
The man behind the empire.
The man behind the secrets.
He looked at me.
“Arthur Miller.”
A faint smile appeared.
“I wondered when you would finally find me.”
I stepped forward.
“You killed my wife.”
Alexander smiled.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I know who did.”
Everyone froze.
Lily whispered:
“Who?”
Alexander looked directly at Richard.
Then answered:
“Your husband.”
Richard’s face turned white.
“What?”
Alexander continued:
“He didn’t tell you?”
Silence.
“He never does.”
Richard stepped back.
“That’s a lie.”
Alexander smiled.
“Is it?”
He looked at Lily.
“Ask him where he was the night Elizabeth died.”
Lily turned slowly toward Richard.
And for the first time…
Richard had no answer.
The man we thought was the enemy…
Had just pointed at someone else.
The man we thought was guilty…
Might have been framed.
Or maybe…
This was the final manipulation.
Because in a family built on lies…
The truth is always the most dangerous weapon.
I looked at Richard.
Then Alexander.
Then Lily.
And I realized something terrifying.
We were no longer searching for the person who destroyed our family.
We were standing in front of them.
May you like
The only question was…
Which one was lying?
