Chapter 9 - THE STORAGE KEY

C-417.
The brass key from Diane’s purse.
Ortiz finally matched it to Cedar Ridge Storage.
Unit C-417.
Registered under a false name.
Paid in cash.
The surveillance history showed Diane visiting twice.
Thomas once.
Laura once.
We opened it under warrant.
Inside were five boxes.
One folding chair.
A broken lamp.
And a locked metal cabinet.
The cabinet contained copies.
Thousands of pages.
Laura had built a complete financial case.
Shell corporations.
False loans.
Forged signatures.
Property liens.
Insurance policies.
At the bottom sat a blue notebook.
My father’s handwriting.
Page after page documented Grant’s fraud.
But the last entry changed everything.
Thomas says Grant can still be contained. I no longer believe him.
Another:
Diane admits she signed three transfers. Claims Thomas told her they were temporary.
Then:
Laura believes Thomas designed the entire structure. Grant may not be the architect.
I stared at Ortiz.
“Thomas.”
She nodded.
Grant had stolen.
Diane had helped.
But Thomas had designed the machine.
The family lawyer.
The man who had known every account.
Every signature.
Every weakness.
Every secret.
Then Ortiz found an envelope.
Inside was a flash drive.
The video began inside my father’s office.
Security footage.
No audio.
Date:
The night he died.
Diane entered first.
Grant arrived seven minutes later.
Thomas five minutes after that.
Natalie appeared briefly.
Then left the room.
My father took a pill from Diane.
Twenty-two minutes later, Grant exited.
Diane remained.
My father began clutching his chest.
He reached for his phone.
And then Thomas reentered.
The next thirty seconds made my blood freeze.
Thomas picked up my father’s phone.
Looked at the screen.
And placed it across the room.
Out of reach.
My father collapsed.
Thomas stood over him.
Watching.
For forty-seven seconds.
Then he finally called emergency services.
Forty-seven seconds.
It didn’t prove Thomas administered the drug.
But it proved he watched my father dying and chose not to help immediately.
Ortiz whispered, “There’s your architect.”
Then the storage facility manager called from the hallway.
“Detective?”
A dark SUV had entered the property.
Victor Hale.
Grant’s mechanic friend.
He wasn’t alone.
Grant was with him.
May you like
They had come for the storage unit.
And they had no idea federal agents were already inside.
