Chapter 15 - THE LOWEST POINT

The exchange failed.

Thomas never appeared.

Instead, a courier collected the fake ledger.

Natalie was released thirty miles away.

Alive.

Terrified.

But before police recovered her, Thomas sent the real threat.

A video.

He had accessed Mercer Development’s internal servers.

Thousands of loan documents.

Employee records.

Investor contracts.

Then he triggered the first default.

Within hours, lenders demanded payment.

Mercer Development shares collapsed.

Projects stopped.

Accounts froze.

Three hundred employees faced losing their jobs.

Grant’s fraud had finally detonated.

Reporters surrounded my house.

My name appeared beside words like scandal, homicide, fraud, inheritance.

Then child services arrived.

Someone had submitted edited footage suggesting I had struck Diane repeatedly during the study confrontation.

The original incident involved one slap as I pulled her away from Emma.

The edited video made it look brutal.

Thomas was attacking everywhere.

Money.

Reputation.

Family.

Custody.

Emma heard part of the conversation.

“Are they taking me away?”

I knelt.

“No.”

“Promise?”

I almost said yes.

Then stopped.

Laura had protected Emma with truth.

Not comforting lies.

“I promise I will fight harder than I have ever fought for anything.”

Emma wrapped her arms around my neck.

That night I finally broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

I sat alone on the bathroom floor and cried until nothing came out.

Laura was dead.

My father was dead.

My mother had betrayed us.

My uncle had helped destroy our company.

My sister was terrified.

My daughter believed adults could simply take her away.

And somewhere, Thomas Voss was still moving pieces.

Ortiz found me the next morning.

“You look terrible.”

“Thank you.”

She handed me coffee.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“The study video.”

My head snapped up.

“The original?”

“Yes.”

Emma’s tablet had automatically backed up audio from a voice-activation learning app she had been using.

The device captured Diane’s voice before I entered.

“You saw nothing. Say it.”

Then Emma crying.

Then the door opening.

Then me.

Everything.

The full recording cleared the child-services concern.

More importantly, it captured something else.

Diane speaking on the phone before confronting Emma.

Her words were faint.

But audible.

Thomas, I found Laura’s phone. Emma saw me. What do I do?

A male voice answered.

Two words.

Control her.

Ortiz looked at me.

“That ties Thomas directly to the incident.”

I listened again.

Control her.

That was his philosophy.

Control Diane.

Control Grant.

Control my father.

Control Laura.

Control me.

Then Emma walked into the room.

She heard the recording.

“That’s the man.”

Ortiz froze.

“What man?”

Emma pointed at the speaker.

“I heard him before.”

“When?”

“At Grandma’s house.”

My pulse jumped.

“What did he say?”

Emma thought.

“He told Grandma the first lie was in the blue room.”

The first lie.

The cloud-vault password clue.

I stood.

May you like

The blue room.

My childhood bedroom.
