Chapter 11 - THE THREAT AGAINST EMMA

Police found Thomas’s escape route beneath the annex.

Old service tunnel.

By the time they reached the alley, he was gone.

But he had left something behind deliberately.

A folder.

Inside was a copy of an email Laura had written to him.

Diane told me that if I bring the records to Daniel, she’ll make sure I lose custody of Emma. She says she has doctors and attorneys who will testify that I’m unstable.

My hands shook.

Laura had never told me.

Another email:

I need proof before I confront Daniel. He loves his mother. I’m afraid he’ll think I’m trying to break his family apart.

That hurt because she was right.

Three years earlier, I might have defended Diane.

I had done it before.

When Laura said Diane undermined her parenting.

When Laura said Diane walked into our house without knocking.

When Laura said Diane treated Emma like something she owned.

I called it family tension.

Laura called it what it was.

Control.

I had failed to see it.

That night, I sat beside Emma’s bed.

She was awake.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Is Grandma going to jail?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did she hurt Mommy?”

Children asked questions adults spent lifetimes avoiding.

“I think Grandma made some very bad choices.”

Emma stared at the ceiling.

“Does she still love me?”

I had no answer good enough.

“I think she believes she does.”

Emma looked at me.

“That’s not the same?”

“No, sweetheart.”

“No.”

She thought about it.

Then whispered, “Mommy used to say love makes you safe.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Yes.”

Emma turned onto her side.

“Grandma doesn’t.”

Three words.

A six-year-old understood what I had missed for thirty-eight years.

The next morning brought another blow.

Diane agreed to cooperate fully.

In exchange, prosecutors would consider reduced charges on the financial crimes.

But she still denied knowing Laura’s car would be sabotaged.

I sat across from her in an interview room.

No glass.

No lawyers.

Just my mother and me.

“Did you threaten Laura with Emma?”

Diane closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was desperate.”

“You threatened to take my daughter.”

“I never would have.”

“You pinned her to the floor two days ago.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I panicked.”

“You always panic after you choose yourself.”

She flinched.

I continued.

“Did you know Thomas was building fraudulent companies?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you know?”

“After Robert died.”

“And you stayed quiet.”

“Yes.”

“After Laura died.”

“Yes.”

“Why keep the phone?”

“Thomas told me to destroy it.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

She stared at the table.

“Because I needed insurance.”

That was Diane.

Even guilt became leverage.

I stood.

She grabbed my wrist.

“Daniel.”

I pulled away.

“Thomas will come after the trust.”

“I know.”

“He needs Emma’s assets to cover the loans.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Her face changed.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“The trust doesn’t only belong to Emma.”

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

Diane whispered:

“Laura changed it before she died.”
