CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE TO TALK

The wedding planner arrived just before sunrise.
She looked exhausted.
Dark circles framed her eyes.
Her hands trembled so badly she spilled half her coffee before she even sat down.
Her name was Melissa Grant.
She couldn't have been older than thirty-five.
Alexander dismissed everyone except Victor, me, and Sofia's attorney.
The conference room door closed behind us.
Melissa stared at the table.
"I want immunity."
Victor folded his hands.
"If you've committed a crime, that's up to the prosecutor."
"I never hurt anyone."
"But you helped organize the wedding."
"I know."
"Then start talking."
Melissa took a long breath.
"I didn't know what Carmen was planning when she hired me."
"When did you realize something was wrong?"
"About three weeks before the wedding."
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"What happened?"
"Carmen gave me a second schedule."
"A second schedule?"
Melissa nodded.
"It wasn't for the guests."
"It was for the staff."
She pulled a folded document from her purse.
"I made a copy."
Victor carefully unfolded it.
At first glance, it looked like an ordinary wedding timeline.
Ceremony.
Reception.
First dance.
Cake cutting.
But handwritten notes filled the margins.
11:20 p.m. — Bride escorted upstairs.
11:30 p.m. — Family meeting.
11:45 p.m. — Obtain signatures.
If unsuccessful, proceed with Phase Two.
Every person in the room fell silent.
Alexander looked up slowly.
"What was Phase Two?"
Melissa's voice cracked.
"I didn't know."
"I asked Carmen."
"And?"
"She told me..."
Melissa swallowed.
"...that some women only become obedient after they understand fear."
Sofia covered her mouth.
I reached for her hand.
Alexander didn't move.
His face had become unreadable.
"What happened on the wedding night?"
Melissa closed her eyes.
"I heard screaming."
"I ran upstairs."
"The bedroom door was locked."
"I could hear Sofia begging them to stop."
My heart shattered.
"I wanted to call the police."
"So why didn't you?"
Melissa burst into tears.
"Because Carmen pointed a gun at me."
The room froze.
"A gun?" Victor asked.
Melissa nodded repeatedly.
"She said if I ruined her son's future..."
"...I'd disappear before sunrise."
Within two hours, search warrants had been requested.
By noon, police officers arrived at the Moreno estate.
Carmen welcomed them with a smile.
"There must be some mistake."
The officers searched every room.
Every safe.
Every office.
Every vehicle.
No gun.
Nothing illegal.
Carmen folded her arms.
"I told you."
"You've wasted everyone's time."
As the officers prepared to leave...
One detective noticed fresh cement near the pool house.
"Has this been renovated recently?"
Carmen hesitated.
"For landscaping."
The detective looked at the workers.
"No one touches that concrete."
An hour later...
Construction crews broke through the foundation.
Hidden beneath the new cement...
They found a steel lockbox.
Inside were three passports.
Two burner phones.
Nearly two hundred thousand dollars in cash.
And a registered handgun.
The serial number matched the weapon Melissa had described.
Carmen's smile disappeared.
For the first time...
She looked frightened.
That afternoon...
News of the search leaked.
Television trucks surrounded the Moreno estate.
Reporters shouted questions as Carmen stepped outside.
"Mrs. Moreno!"
"Did you assault your daughter-in-law?"
"Did you threaten witnesses?"
"Is it true police recovered a firearm?"
Carmen ignored every question.
But Javier couldn't.
He watched the live broadcast from his attorney's office.
His face turned white.
"This wasn't supposed to happen."
His lawyer looked at him carefully.
"You need to tell me everything."
"I already did."
"No."
The attorney leaned forward.
"You told me enough to defend you."
"I'm asking for the truth."
Javier remained silent.
The lawyer slowly removed his glasses.
"If I walk into court and discover you've lied to me..."
"I'm done."
After nearly a minute...
Javier whispered,
"My mother planned everything."
The lawyer nodded.
"I assumed that."
Javier looked up.
"I helped."
The room fell silent.
"I invited Sofia upstairs."
"I told her Mom wanted to give her a family gift."
He buried his face in his hands.
"When she walked into the bedroom..."
"...they locked the door."
His lawyer closed the file.
"I'm withdrawing from your case."
Back at Alexander's estate...
Sofia watched the news without saying a word.
Every headline showed the same images.
Police cars.
Evidence boxes.
Reporters.
Carmen being questioned.
She muted the television.
"I don't feel happy."
I looked at her.
"They hurt you."
"I know."
"They deserve to be punished."
"I know."
"So why aren't you smiling?"
Sofia looked out the window.
"Because this won't give me my wedding back."
No one answered.
Some things justice could never return.
At six that evening...
Victor entered with another envelope.
"I think we finally know why Carmen wanted the condo so badly."
Alexander opened the file.
The property records.
Loan agreements.
Construction permits.
He frowned.
"This doesn't make sense."
Victor nodded.
"It didn't make sense to us either."
The condo wasn't valuable because of the apartment itself.
It sat directly beside three other units.
Three units Carmen secretly controlled through shell companies.
If Sofia signed hers away...
The four units together would create enough space for a luxury redevelopment project.
Estimated value—
Twenty-eight million dollars.
It had never been about sentiment.
Never about family.
Never even about inheritance.
Sofia's home had been the final piece of a twenty-eight-million-dollar puzzle.
Alexander slowly closed the folder.
"So that's the price."
Victor nodded.
"They tortured your daughter..."
"...for real estate."
The room became deathly quiet.
Alexander stood.
He buttoned his jacket.
"Call the district attorney."
Victor picked up his phone.
"And the press?"
Alexander looked toward the window.
"Tomorrow morning."
"I want everyone to know exactly who Carmen Moreno is."
At precisely eight o'clock the next morning...
The district attorney held a press conference.
The courtroom steps overflowed with cameras.
Witnesses.
Lawyers.
Police officers.
Melissa stood surrounded by security.
She was prepared to testify.
So was Daniel Ross.
So were two former household employees who had suddenly decided they no longer wanted to protect Carmen.
One by one...
The walls around the Moreno family began to collapse.
Across the street...
Inside a black SUV...
Alexander watched the broadcast in silence.
His phone vibrated.
Victor answered before handing it over.
"Sir..."
"It's the county jail."
Alexander frowned.
"Carmen was arrested an hour ago."
"I know."
Victor's expression darkened.
"That's not why they're calling."
Alexander took the phone.
"This is Alexander Hale."
The voice on the other end spoke quickly.
"Mr. Hale..."
"We have a problem."
"What kind of problem?"
"Carmen Moreno says she'll confess to everything..."
"...but only if she speaks to you."
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"And if I refuse?"
The answer came immediately.
"She says the one secret she's been protecting..."
"...will die with her."
Alexander slowly lowered the phone.
For the first time since this nightmare had begun...
He wasn't thinking about revenge.
He was thinking about the one question that still had no answer.
Why had Carmen chosen Sofia in the first place?
Because somehow...
May you like
He knew the truth...
Was about to be far more dangerous than anyone had imagined.
