CHAPTER 3 — THE TRAP THEY BUILT

I couldn't stop staring at the report.

SURVEILLANCE OF SOFIA HALE.

Six months.

Someone had been following my daughter for six months before her wedding.

I looked at Alexander.

"This can't be real."

"It is."

"Maybe they only wanted information about the condo."

Alexander slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Nobody spends this kind of money to investigate a single apartment."

He slid another folder across the table.

Victor had included photographs.

Sofia leaving her office.

Sofia buying groceries.

Sofia jogging through the park.

Sofia having lunch with friends.

One picture showed her standing outside my apartment.

Another had been taken through the window of her favorite café.

The photographs weren't random.

Someone had been studying her routine.

Learning her habits.

Tracking her life.

I felt sick.

"They were hunting her."

Alexander nodded.

"Professionally."

He reached for his phone.

"Victor."

"Yes, sir."

"I want the investigator in my office."

"He refuses to talk."

Alexander's expression never changed.

"Everyone talks."

"It's only a question of when."

At ten o'clock that morning, the private investigator walked into Alexander's office with his attorney beside him.

His name was Daniel Ross.

Mid-fifties.

Gray suit.

Confident smile.

The smile disappeared the second Alexander closed the door.

Daniel sat down.

"I've done nothing illegal."

Alexander remained standing.

"I didn't say you had."

"Then why am I here?"

Alexander placed one photograph on the desk.

Sofia's bruised face.

Daniel looked away.

"I don't know anything about that."

"No?"

Alexander placed a second photograph beside it.

Then a third.

Then a fourth.

Every injury.

Every bruise.

Every documented wound.

The investigator swallowed.

Alexander spoke quietly.

"You followed my daughter."

"Yes."

"You reported her movements."

"Yes."

"You accepted payment from Carmen Moreno."

"Yes."

"What were they planning?"

Daniel hesitated.

"My contract only required surveillance."

Alexander leaned forward.

"What."

"Were."

"They."

"Planning?"

The room became perfectly still.

Finally Daniel sighed.

"They wanted leverage."

"What kind of leverage?"

"They believed Sofia would inherit your estate one day."

I froze.

Alexander said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"They wanted every asset transferred into Javier's control before that happened."

I stared at him in disbelief.

"That's insane."

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

"It was calculated."

"They knew Sofia loved Javier."

"They believed love would make her sign anything."

"And if she refused?"

Daniel looked down.

"They discussed... other methods."

Alexander's voice became dangerously calm.

"What methods?"

"I wasn't part of those conversations."

"But you heard them."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Carmen said..."

He struggled to finish.

"...that broken people agree to things healthy people never would."

The room went silent.

Alexander didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't even breathe.

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost gentle.

"Leave."

Daniel stood.

"I truly didn't know this would happen."

Alexander looked straight into his eyes.

"You knew enough."

Daniel lowered his head and walked out.

The door clicked shut.

Alexander remained perfectly still for almost thirty seconds.

Then...

He picked up the crystal paperweight from his desk...

And crushed it against the wall.

Glass exploded across the room.

It was the first sign of emotion he had shown all day.

That afternoon...

Javier finally found us.

Or at least...

He found the front gate of the private estate where Sofia was recovering.

Three security vehicles blocked the entrance.

Javier jumped out of his car.

"I need to see my wife!"

The guards didn't move.

"I'm her husband!"

No response.

He shouted louder.

"I know she's here!"

The gates remained closed.

Finally a black sedan rolled toward the entrance.

Alexander stepped out.

Javier looked relieved.

"Mr. Hale."

"I'm glad you're here."

"This has all been a misunderstanding."

Alexander walked toward him slowly.

"What misunderstanding?"

"My mother lost control."

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

Alexander stopped less than three feet away.

"You watched."

Javier opened his mouth.

"I..."

"You stood outside the room."

"I was afraid."

Alexander nodded once.

"I know."

"I should've stopped them."

"You should have."

"I'm sorry."

Alexander studied him for several seconds.

Then he asked one question.

"When Sofia screamed..."

Javier's face turned pale.

"...did you recognize her voice?"

Javier couldn't answer.

Alexander continued.

"Or had she already become nothing more than a signature on a property deed?"

Javier lowered his head.

"I love her."

Alexander almost smiled.

"No."

"You loved what you thought she would inherit."

The words hit harder than any punch.

Javier took one desperate step forward.

"I can fix this."

Alexander's eyes became ice.

"No."

"You can explain it."

"I'll testify against my mother."

"No."

"I'll give Sofia everything."

"No."

"What do you want from me?"

Alexander answered without raising his voice.

"I want exactly what you gave my daughter."

Javier looked confused.

"What?"

"Consequences."

Alexander turned away.

The gates opened.

His car disappeared inside.

Leaving Javier standing alone in the street.

That evening...

Victor arrived with another file.

"This is worse."

Alexander opened it.

Every financial transfer made by Carmen over the last three years.

Hidden companies.

Fake consulting fees.

Offshore accounts.

Shell corporations.

Money moved in circles.

One transaction caught Victor's attention.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

Transferred two weeks before the wedding.

Recipient—

Judge Leonard Mills Foundation.

I frowned.

"A charity?"

Victor shook his head.

"The foundation exists."

"The charity doesn't."

Alexander looked up.

"A payoff?"

Victor nodded.

"We're still confirming it."

"But if we're right..."

"...someone expected legal trouble before the wedding even happened."

The room fell silent.

They hadn't only planned the assault.

They had prepared for the lawsuit.

Prepared for the divorce.

Prepared to win.

Everything had been arranged before Sofia ever walked down the aisle.

Alexander slowly closed the file.

"They thought this was over before it started."

Victor smiled faintly.

"They've made one mistake."

Alexander looked at him.

"They underestimated you?"

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"They underestimated a father."

Late that night, I sat beside Sofia's bed.

She was finally awake.

Her voice was stronger.

"I heard Javier came."

"Yes."

"Did Dad let him in?"

"No."

She closed her eyes.

"I don't love him anymore."

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

"I don't even know if I ever did."

I squeezed her hand.

"You loved the man he pretended to be."

She nodded.

"Is Dad going to destroy them?"

I thought about Alexander.

The phone calls.

The investigators.

The lawyers.

The silence.

"I don't know."

She looked toward the window.

"I don't want revenge."

I brushed a strand of hair from her face.

"What do you want?"

She answered without hesitation.

"I want the truth."

Just after midnight...

Victor called again.

Alexander answered immediately.

"We've got something."

"What?"

"We found the wedding planner."

"And?"

"She wants immunity."

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"What does she know?"

Victor took a slow breath.

"She says Carmen never intended for Sofia to survive the marriage."

The room went completely silent.

Victor continued.

"The wedding wasn't the end of the plan..."

"...it was only the beginning."

Alexander slowly stood.

For the first time since all of this had started...

Real fear crossed his face.

Because if the wedding planner was telling the truth...

The beating in the bridal suite...

Had never been meant as punishment.

It had been a test.

To see...

May you like

How much suffering Sofia could endure...

Before she finally broke.
