CHAPTER 2 — THE FIRST MOVE

Alexander didn't speak for almost a full minute.
He remained on one knee beside Sofia, studying every bruise as though he were committing each one to memory.
The apartment was silent except for Sofia's uneven breathing.
I knew that silence.
It was dangerous.
During the twenty-three years we had been married, I had learned something about Alexander.
The louder everyone else became...
The quieter he got.
And the quieter he became...
The more devastating the outcome.
Finally, he stood.
"Elena."
His voice was calm.
"Get your coat."
I frowned.
"It's almost four in the morning."
"I know what time it is."
"Where are we going?"
"We're taking Sofia to a hospital."
Sofia immediately shook her head.
"No."
Her eyes widened with panic.
"They'll find me."
"They said they have people everywhere."
Alexander looked at her with a tenderness I hadn't seen in years.
"No one is touching you again."
His tone wasn't comforting.
It wasn't hopeful.
It sounded like a promise carved in stone.
"They won't stop," Sofia whispered.
"You don't know Carmen."
Alexander's expression never changed.
"No."
"I know people exactly like Carmen."
He picked up his phone.
Within seconds, someone answered.
"Sir?"
"I need my medical team."
"They're already on standby."
"Good."
"I also need a secure residence prepared."
"Immediately, sir."
"And call Victor."
There was a brief pause.
"The attorney?"
"No."
Alexander's eyes never left Sofia.
"The investigator."
"Tell him to wake everyone."
"I want everything Javier Moreno and Carmen Moreno have ever hidden."
"Every bank account."
"Every property."
"Every lawsuit."
"Every unpaid tax."
"I want every lie."
The man on the other end answered without hesitation.
"Yes, sir."
Alexander ended the call.
Sofia stared at him.
"Dad..."
"What?"
"I thought you retired."
"I did."
"Then why..."
He gave the smallest smile.
"Some doors never close."
Twenty minutes later, a black SUV stopped outside the building.
Then another.
Then a third.
Men in dark suits stepped out, scanning the empty street before opening the rear door.
Alexander helped Sofia to her feet.
She winced.
I noticed fresh bruises forming beneath the sleeves of her dress.
My stomach turned.
Outside, dawn was still hours away.
The city looked asleep.
But somehow it felt as if something enormous had already begun.
The private medical clinic occupied the top floor of a glass tower overlooking the river.
No waiting room.
No paperwork.
No questions.
A woman in blue scrubs greeted Alexander at the elevator.
"Good morning, Mr. Hale."
He nodded once.
"My daughter."
The doctor's expression changed the instant she saw Sofia.
"My God..."
Within minutes Sofia disappeared behind examination room doors.
Alexander and I waited in silence.
Neither of us looked at the other.
After twelve years apart...
This wasn't how I imagined seeing him again.
Finally the doctor returned.
She carried a tablet.
Her face had gone pale.
"There are forty-two separate contusions."
I closed my eyes.
Forty-two.
Not forty.
More.
"There are fractured ribs."
My knees weakened.
Alexander caught my arm before I fell.
The doctor continued.
"Her left wrist was partially dislocated."
"There are signs she was restrained."
"And..."
She hesitated.
Alexander's voice remained level.
"Say it."
"The injuries are consistent with prolonged assault."
"Several people participated."
I couldn't breathe.
The room seemed to spin.
The doctor looked at Alexander.
"We've photographed every injury."
"We've documented everything."
"The evidence is preserved."
Alexander simply nodded.
"Good."
The doctor blinked.
"I expected you to ask if she'll recover."
Alexander answered quietly.
"I already know she will."
"What I need now..."
"...is proof."
At seven-fifteen that morning, Javier finally called.
Sofia stared at the screen.
His name flashed over and over again.
JAVIER.
Call rejected.
Five seconds later—
Another call.
Then another.
Then a message.
Baby, where are you?
Mom lost her temper.
Please come back.
Let's talk.
Sofia laughed.
It wasn't the laugh of someone amused.
It was the sound a heart makes when it finally stops believing.
She handed Alexander the phone.
He read every message.
Then placed the phone on the table.
"Do not answer."
"What if he comes looking for me?"
"He will."
"And if he does?"
Alexander looked out the window.
"He won't like what he finds."
Across town...
Carmen Moreno slammed a coffee cup onto the marble kitchen island.
"Find her."
Javier rubbed his forehead.
"I've been calling."
"No answer."
Carmen's eyes narrowed.
"Did she take the documents?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
Her voice became sharper.
"That condo is worth nearly three million dollars."
"If she files for divorce before signing—"
"I know!"
Javier shouted.
The room fell silent.
His younger sister slowly backed toward the hallway.
Even she looked frightened.
Carmen stepped closer.
"You were supposed to keep your wife under control."
"I tried."
"You failed."
Javier looked exhausted.
"You went too far."
Carmen slapped him across the face.
Hard.
"I did what weak men never do."
"I protected this family."
Javier touched his cheek.
For the first time...
He looked uncertain.
"What if she tells someone?"
Carmen smiled.
"Who?"
"Her mother?"
"That woman has no influence."
"And her father..."
She laughed.
"...walked out of their lives years ago."
"He's finished."
"No one fears Alexander Hale anymore."
At that exact moment...
Alexander was standing inside a conference room on the thirty-second floor of Hale International.
He hadn't stepped into the building in almost six years.
Employees stopped working as he walked past.
Some stared.
Some whispered.
Some looked genuinely shocked.
By eight o'clock...
Every executive had been summoned.
No explanations.
No agenda.
Just one instruction.
Mandatory attendance.
The boardroom doors closed.
Twenty-three executives waited in silence.
Alexander stood at the head of the table.
His suit had been replaced.
His face remained expressionless.
He placed a single photograph onto the polished wood.
It was one of Sofia's bruised arms.
No one spoke.
"My daughter."
His voice echoed through the room.
"This happened twelve hours ago."
Every eye dropped to the photograph.
Alexander folded his hands.
"I came here today for one reason."
"If any company..."
"If any bank..."
"If any law firm..."
"If any charity..."
"If any public official..."
"...has ever done business with Javier Moreno or Carmen Moreno..."
"I want to know before sunset."
One executive cleared his throat.
"Sir... are we acquiring something?"
Alexander looked at him.
"No."
"We're uncovering something."
Another executive asked carefully,
"And if we find it?"
Alexander answered without the slightest hesitation.
"Then we remove every place they have left to hide."
No one asked another question.
They had all recognized that expression.
The meeting ended in less than four minutes.
By lunchtime...
More than eighty investigators...
Six forensic accountants...
Three former federal prosecutors...
And one of the country's most respected litigation firms...
Were quietly digging into every corner of the Moreno family's finances.
Alexander wasn't trying to destroy them.
Not yet.
First...
He intended to learn exactly who they were.
Because the most effective revenge...
Was never driven by anger.
It was built on truth.
That afternoon, Sofia finally fell asleep.
It was the first real sleep she'd had since the wedding.
I covered her with a blanket.
Alexander stood near the window, reading reports that had already begun arriving.
Without looking at me, he said,
"I was wrong."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"I should never have stayed away."
Twelve years of resentment suddenly felt very small.
Neither of us spoke again.
Then his phone vibrated.
One message.
One sentence.
Victor had found something.
Something no one had expected.
Alexander read it once.
His eyes hardened.
Then he slowly handed me the phone.
I looked at the screen.
Hidden beneath Javier's family's financial records...
Was a payment made six months before the wedding.
The recipient wasn't Carmen.
It wasn't Javier.
It was someone else.
A licensed private investigator.
And beside the payment...
Were four chilling words.
SURVEILLANCE OF SOFIA HALE.
They hadn't decided to steal her property on the wedding night.
May you like
They had been hunting our daughter...
For months.
