Chapter 6 - The Successor Helena Chose

Clara laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the alternative was screaming.

“No.”

Arthur watched her.

“That was my reaction.”

“I’m a financial analyst.”

“You’re Robert Bennett’s daughter.”

“So?”

“You inherited the archive.”

“I didn’t know it existed.”

“Helena did.”

Sarah scrolled through the succession file.

Behavioral assessments.

Psychological profiling.

Career history.

Risk tolerance.

Ethical thresholds.

Clara’s life reduced to metrics.

One line stood out.

Subject demonstrates unusually high resistance to authority pressure when moral injury is perceived.

Another.

Strong attachment to institutional fairness. Potential weakness: family leverage.

Clara felt nauseated.

“They studied me.”

Arthur nodded.

“For years.”

“Why choose someone who hates everything Helena built?”

Arthur looked toward Daniel.

“Because Helena doesn’t want a clone.”

Sarah understood.

“She wants legitimacy.”

Arthur smiled.

“Exactly.”

Helena Voss was aging.

Asterion could survive through blackmail.

Vanguard could not.

Its public empire needed a credible leader.

Someone young enough to control for decades.

Someone with clean hands.

Someone whose father had resisted Asterion.

Someone employees would trust.

Someone the archive might recognize as custodian.

Clara.

“She wanted to recruit you,” Arthur said.

Clara’s voice turned cold.

“By killing my father?”

“He refused her.”

“Then she chose me?”

“She believes resistance can be converted.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Helena doesn’t understand Clara.”

Arthur looked at Sarah.

“Helena understands everyone.”

“No.”

Sarah leaned toward him.

“She understands leverage.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

For the first time Arthur had no answer.

Daniel returned from the hallway.

“We have a problem.”

Sarah looked up.

“What?”

“Arthur’s arrest leaked.”

Arthur’s face hardened.

“To whom?”

“Every major financial outlet.”

Clara frowned.

“Why is that a problem?”

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“The story says he was arrested for embezzlement after an internal Vanguard investigation led by Chairwoman Helena Voss.”

Arthur laughed.

There was no humor in it.

“She’s cutting me loose.”

Daniel continued.

“Vanguard issued a statement praising Clara Bennett for identifying suspicious transactions.”

Clara stared.

“What?”

“You’re being called a whistleblower.”

“That sounds good.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

Clara realized.

“If Helena controls the story…”

“She controls what people think the crime was.”

Arthur nodded.

“Pension fraud.”

“Not Asterion.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel handed Sarah a tablet.

Helena appeared at a podium outside Vanguard.

Calm.

Grave.

Protective.

She announced that the company had discovered “serious misconduct by a senior executive.”

She promised full cooperation.

She praised Vanguard’s “culture of integrity.”

And then she said Clara’s name.

“Ms. Bennett demonstrated extraordinary courage.”

Clara felt sick hearing it.

Helena looked directly into the television camera.

“We will do everything necessary to ensure her safety.”

Sarah whispered,

“That message is for us.”

Arthur nodded.

“She’s telling Clara she can still come home.”

Clara shut off the screen.

“I’m not going anywhere near her.”

Arthur looked at her.

“She will make you.”

“No.”

“You still think this is about threats.”

Clara turned.

“What is it about?”

“Belonging.”

Arthur’s expression darkened.

“Helena doesn’t simply break people.”

“She rebuilds the world around them until obedience feels like the only rational decision.”

Sarah watched him.

“That happened to you.”

Arthur looked away.

Clara saw it.

For all his cruelty, Arthur Hale had once been someone else.

That did not excuse him.

But it explained why Helena had kept him so close.

She did not find monsters.

She manufactured useful ones.

Sarah’s phone vibrated.

A location from Elias.

Observatory confirmed. Come now.

She looked at Clara.

“Michael.”

Clara stood.

Daniel blocked the door.

“You can’t leave.”

Sarah stared.

“Move.”

“This building is secure.”

Arthur laughed.

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“You still don’t understand.”

Arthur leaned back.

“Nothing connected to Vanguard is secure.”

The lights went out.

Emergency alarms began screaming.

Daniel reached for his weapon.

The door opened.

A federal agent stepped inside.

Then another.

Sarah recognized neither.

Daniel did.

“What’s happening?”

The first agent raised credentials.

“Daniel Cross, you are under arrest.”

Everyone froze.

“For what?”

“Obstruction of justice, conspiracy, bribery, and unlawful disclosure of protected information.”

Daniel stared.

“This is insane.”

Arthur laughed again.

“Helena.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“On whose warrant?”

The agent named a judge.

Sarah knew the name.

It appeared in the archive.

Asterion asset.

Daniel looked at her.

She understood.

The building was compromised.

The investigation was compromised.

The warrant system was compromised.

Helena was closing doors.

The agent reached for Daniel.

Sarah moved between them.

“Sarah,” Daniel said.

“Don’t.”

She looked at him.

He was right.

If she fought federal agents inside a federal building, Helena would win instantly.

Daniel held out his hands.

The cuffs closed.

Before they took him away, he looked at Sarah.

“Find Michael.”

Then he looked at Clara.

“And whatever happens, do not let Helena decide who you are.”

The agents led him away.

Arthur watched.

Clara turned.

“We need to move.”

Sarah nodded.

Arthur stood.

The remaining investigator pushed him down.

“You stay.”

Arthur looked at Clara.

“If Helena gets me, I’m dead.”

Clara stared at him.

“You tried to kill me.”

“I know.”

“You expect me to save you?”

“No.”

Arthur swallowed.

“I expect you to decide whether letting Helena erase a witness helps her more than it punishes me.”

Clara hated that he was right.

Sarah looked at her.

Her decision.

Clara exhaled.

“Bring him.”

Arthur blinked.

The investigator objected.

Clara turned.

“You heard him.”

Minutes later, a quiet financial analyst, an undercover investigator, a disgraced CEO in handcuffs, and a federal investigator who no longer trusted his own agency left through a basement evidence corridor.

Helena Voss had once controlled Clara’s career.

Now Clara was carrying the archive Helena had killed to recover.

And for the first time, Clara understood why her father had chosen her.

May you like

Not because she was fearless.

Because when she finally saw the truth, she could not pretend she hadn’t.
