Chapter 12 - Beneath Vanguard

Vanguard reopened forty-eight hours after Arthur’s arrest.
Employees returned beneath television cameras and reassurances.
Helena announced an emergency leadership committee.
Arthur had been formally removed.
Clara remained publicly praised as the brave analyst who exposed him.
Nobody knew she was preparing to break into the building.
She entered through the front door.
That was Sarah’s idea.
“People notice people sneaking.”
She adjusted Clara’s blazer.
“They rarely notice someone who looks like she belongs.”
Clara’s badge still worked.
That surprised them.
Helena’s decision.
Or Thomas’s trap.
Either way, Clara walked into Vanguard at 9:12 a.m.
Reporters waited outside.
Coworkers stared.
Some applauded.
Clara almost hated it.
They believed the story Helena had given them.
Arthur was the villain.
Vanguard was healing.
Truth was messier.
Sarah entered twenty minutes later disguised as an outside security consultant.
Michael accessed systems remotely.
Elias waited in a delivery vehicle.
Their plan was simple.
Which meant it would fail somewhere.
Clara entered the financial archives.
Sarah reached the maintenance core.
At 10:03 a.m., they met beneath B4.
Arthur’s old plans revealed a sealed freight shaft.
Clara used Helena’s vault keycard.
The door opened.
Sarah looked at her.
“She wants us down there.”
“Probably.”
“Comforting.”
They descended.
Sublevel 5.
Then 6.
The hidden facility looked nothing like the dusty tunnels.
White walls.
Biometric locks.
Server cooling systems.
Armed private security.
Sarah whispered,
“This isn’t corporate IT.”
“No.”
A camera turned toward them.
Then away.
Sarah noticed.
“Helena.”
Clara nodded.
Someone was clearing their path.
They reached the core.
A circular room surrounded by server cabinets.
At the center stood Thomas Wren.
Alone.
He smiled.
“Ms. Bennett.”
Clara stopped.
“Mr. Wren.”
Sarah stepped beside her.
Thomas looked almost disappointed.
“Helena always loved symbolism.”
“What?”
“Two women walking into the machine built by people who underestimated them.”
Sarah’s eyes narrowed.
“Give us the key.”
Thomas laughed.
“No.”
Clara looked around.
“You can’t migrate without ours.”
“I don’t need yours.”
Michael heard through comms.
“What?”
Thomas held up a drive.
“Robert’s key was copied before his death.”
Clara felt cold.
“Sarah’s was duplicated during manufacturing.”
Sarah touched her recorder.
Thomas smiled.
“Helena never understood technology.”
Michael shouted through the earpiece.
“He’s bluffing.”
Thomas looked toward Clara’s ear.
“No, Michael.”
Everyone froze.
Thomas could hear their channel.
“Still hiding in Pennsylvania?”
Michael disconnected instantly.
Sarah moved.
Security doors slammed shut.
Gas vents opened.
Sarah covered Clara’s mouth.
Thomas calmly put on a respirator.
“Sleep.”
Sarah pulled two emergency masks from her vest.
Of course she had masks.
Clara almost laughed.
They ran toward the core console.
Thomas drew a weapon.
Sarah tackled Clara behind a server rack as a shot struck metal.
Sarah moved around the opposite side.
Thomas fired again.
Clara crawled toward the console.
Migration:
42:11:08
She inserted Robert’s key.
System rejected.
DUPLICATE CREDENTIAL CONFLICT.
Thomas laughed.
“Told you.”
Clara stared at the message.
Duplicate.
Two Robert keys active.
Then she realized.
Cryptographic systems hated simultaneous identical credentials.
If she forced enough conflicts—
“Sarah!”
“What?”
“Keep him busy.”
Sarah almost laughed.
“I was planning to.”
Clara triggered repeated authentication.
Thomas’s copied key began colliding.
System warnings filled the screen.
Thomas saw.
“No.”
He moved toward her.
Sarah intercepted him.
Unlike Arthur, Thomas did not fight emotionally.
He fought efficiently.
Sarah took a blow to the ribs.
She dropped.
Thomas moved past.
Clara kept typing.
Credential failure.
Key desynchronization.
Migration paused.
Thomas grabbed Clara.
She drove an elbow backward.
He staggered.
Sarah swept his legs.
Thomas fell.
His weapon slid across the floor.
Clara reached it first.
She pointed it at him.
Her hands shook.
Thomas smiled.
“You won’t shoot me.”
Clara stared.
“No.”
She kicked the weapon away.
“You’re right.”
Sarah restrained him.
Clara removed the physical key from around his neck.
Three keys.
They had them.
Then the server screens changed.
MIGRATION RESUMED – REMOTE OVERRIDE
Clara stared.
“How?”
Thomas smiled from the floor.
“Because I’m not the only one who wants Asterion to survive.”
A name appeared as remote authorization.
DANIEL CROSS
Sarah went still.
“No.”
May you like
Thomas laughed softly.
“Your handler just chose a side.”
