Chapter 14 - The Betrayal That Wasn’t

Daniel Cross’s daughter was twenty-four.
Emily Cross.
Graduate student.
Missing for sixteen hours.
Thomas’s people had taken her before Daniel’s arrest.
Then someone inside federal custody gave Daniel a choice.
Activate the override.
Or receive his daughter in pieces.
Thomas listened silently as Rebecca revealed it.
Clara looked at him.
“You knew.”
He shrugged.
“Leverage works.”
Sarah hit him.
Once.
Hard.
Thomas smiled through the blood at his lip.
“There she is.”
Sarah nearly hit him again.
Clara stopped her.
“Don’t give him proof that everyone becomes him eventually.”
Sarah stepped back.
Thomas’s smile disappeared.
They needed Emily.
Michael traced a photograph sent to Daniel.
Industrial walls.
A fire extinguisher bracket.
Partial sign.
Clara recognized a shipping code.
Vanguard logistics.
Warehouse district in Newark.
Sarah and Elias went.
Clara remained with Michael managing the response network.
That split nearly killed them.
At the warehouse, Sarah found Emily alive.
But Thomas had anticipated rescue.
Private contractors sealed the building.
Elias was shot in the shoulder.
Sarah got Emily into a loading vehicle.
Then the doors locked.
Smoke began filling the warehouse.
Sarah searched for another exit.
Emily panicked.
“My father told me this would happen.”
“What?”
“He said someday his mistakes would find me.”
Sarah grabbed her.
“His mistakes are not your sentence.”
They escaped through a roof vent minutes before fire consumed the west wing.
Elias survived.
Barely.
Daniel received proof his daughter was safe.
He shut down his override immediately.
The migration system recalculated.
18:22:11
Clara stared.
Removing Daniel accelerated Thomas’s fallback timer.
Eighteen hours.
Then Daniel called.
“Thank you.”
Clara said,
“Help us finish it.”
“I will.”
For the first time, Daniel stopped trying to manage the problem himself.
He gave them access to federal evidentiary channels.
Not all.
Enough.
Rebecca Sloan agreed to testify.
More Asterion assets began defecting.
The response network exceeded two thousand.
Thomas watched everything from restraints inside the hidden server facility.
“You think this is victory?”
Clara looked at him.
“No.”
“Good.”
“Why?”
“Because Helena still hasn’t chosen.”
Clara frowned.
“She gave us access.”
“She gave you tools.”
“That isn’t choosing.”
Sarah returned with Emily and Elias.
Daniel followed later.
Michael connected remotely.
For the first time, nearly every surviving piece of the original investigation occupied one room.
Except Helena.
Arthur.
And Clara’s mother.
Diane called at 4:10 p.m.
Clara answered.
“Mom?”
A voice came over the line.
Arthur.
Clara went cold.
“Hello, Clara.”
“Where is my mother?”
“Safe.”
“If you touched her—”
“I didn’t.”
“Then why are you with her?”
“Because Helena is here too.”
Silence.
Clara looked at Sarah.
“Where?”
Arthur gave an address.
Helena’s estate.
Then another voice.
Diane.
“Clara, don’t come.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Mom.”
“I’m okay.”
Helena’s voice entered calmly.
“Your mother is correct.”
Clara’s anger erupted.
“Stay away from her.”
“I am trying.”
“What does that mean?”
A gunshot cracked through the phone.
Clara flinched.
Then shouting.
Arthur cursed.
The line disconnected.
Clara stared.
Sarah grabbed her coat.
“What happened?”
Clara whispered,
“Someone attacked Helena’s estate.”
Thomas began laughing.
Everyone turned.
He leaned back.
“My people.”
Clara stared.
“You’re restrained.”
Thomas smiled.
“You still think I need to be free to give orders.”
Sarah stepped toward him.
“Why kill Helena now?”
“Because she has the last thing I need.”
Clara frowned.
“We have the keys.”
Thomas looked directly at her.
“Not that.”
“What?”
“The kill switch.”
Silence.
Michael’s voice came through.
“What kill switch?”
Thomas smiled.
“The one Helena never told any of you existed.”
If true, Asterion could be destroyed safely.
No indiscriminate data release.
No transfer.
No successor.
One final mechanism.
And Helena Voss had kept it hidden from everyone.
May you like
Including Thomas.
The countdown fell below eighteen hours.
