CHAPTER 24:The Truth a Son Could Not Silence

The gunshot echoed through the underground archive.
For one endless second, no one moved.
Edward Mercer collapsed against the stone floor, one hand pressed tightly over his chest. Blood seeped between his fingers, staining the gray concrete beneath him.
Rebecca instinctively shielded Samuel Carter's notebook beneath her jacket.
Torres raised his weapon.
"David! Drop the gun!"
David Mercer didn't even look at him.
His eyes remained fixed on his father.
"You finally chose the truth."
His voice was calm.
"So why does it feel twenty-four years too late?"
Edward struggled to breathe.
"It is..."
"...too late for me."
He coughed violently.
"But not..."
"...for them."
David slowly lowered the pistol.
Not in surrender.
In disappointment.
"You still don't understand."
Rebecca frowned.
"What don't we understand?"
David finally turned toward her.
"You think I'm protecting murderers."
"Aren't you?"
"No."
His answer came without hesitation.
"I'm protecting something much bigger."
Ross stepped forward.
"The bomb."
"The sniper."
"Richard Lawson."
"Helen Brooks."
"You call that protection?"
David's expression hardened.
"I call it containment."
No one spoke.
David looked around the underground archive.
"You've spent months chasing one corporation."
"One judge."
"One family."
He shook his head.
"You still have no idea what Samuel Carter actually uncovered."
Rebecca held Samuel's notebook tighter.
"Then tell us."
David laughed quietly.
"He already did."
His eyes shifted toward the notebook.
"Read page forty-seven."
Rebecca slowly opened the weathered journal.
The pages were numbered by Samuel himself.
She turned carefully.
Forty-three.
Forty-four.
Forty-five.
Forty-six.
Then...
Forty-seven.
Her face slowly changed.
Torres immediately noticed.
"What is it?"
Rebecca didn't answer.
She simply handed him the notebook.
The page contained a hand-drawn chart.
Not of Holloway Select Markets.
Not of Mercer Holdings.
But of something called:
The Lake Union Trust
Ross frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Edward whispered from the floor,
"Almost no one has."
Rebecca continued reading Samuel's notes aloud.
The companies are only masks.
The money moves through charitable trusts.
The trusts finance political campaigns, judicial appointments, media acquisitions, and corporate mergers.
The same six families have quietly controlled billions of dollars for over sixty years.
Arthur's knees weakened.
"This wasn't about one company."
Edward shook his head.
"No."
"Holloway Select was only one branch."
David looked toward Evelyn.
"Now you understand."
"Samuel wasn't exposing corruption."
"He was exposing an entire system."
Rebecca slowly closed the notebook.
"So you decided to protect it?"
David's eyes filled with something unexpected.
Not pride.
Pain.
"No."
"I decided to stop the country from tearing itself apart."
Torres stared at him.
"You murdered people."
David answered quietly.
"I stopped a civil war among billionaires."
The room fell silent.
No one knew whether he believed his own words anymore.
Edward struggled to sit upright.
His breathing had become shallow.
"David..."
His son looked at him.
"You always taught me one thing."
David's voice cracked.
"Power survives because ordinary people never see how it's connected."
Edward nodded weakly.
"I was wrong."
David looked away.
"No."
"You were honest."
"For once."
Rebecca noticed something strange.
David's finger wasn't resting on the trigger anymore.
It was shaking.
Not with fear.
With exhaustion.
Twenty years of carrying someone else's sins had finally become too heavy.
She spoke softly.
"It doesn't have to end this way."
David laughed bitterly.
"It ended a long time ago."
Outside...
The FBI tactical commander quietly positioned two sniper teams around the estate.
They had a clear shot through the underground ventilation shaft.
Ross's radio crackled.
"Target acquired."
Ross looked toward David.
He slowly lowered his own weapon.
"Negative."
"Hold your fire."
Rebecca understood immediately.
David still had answers.
And Samuel Carter deserved every one of them.
David slowly reached into his coat.
Every agent tensed.
Instead of another weapon...
He removed a thin leather notebook.
"This belonged to me."
He tossed it across the floor.
Rebecca picked it up.
Inside were surveillance notes.
Dates.
Locations.
Meetings.
Photographs.
Dozens of names Samuel had never discovered.
Congressmen.
Corporate lobbyists.
Investment bankers.
Foreign intermediaries.
Every page expanded the conspiracy.
Rebecca looked up.
"You documented everything."
David nodded.
"So someone eventually could end it."
Torres frowned.
"If that's true..."
"...why kill anyone?"
David closed his eyes.
"Because every time I hesitated..."
"...someone higher than me gave the order."
Silence.
Rebecca felt a chill.
"Higher than Judge Whitmore?"
David nodded.
"Higher."
"Higher than Edward Mercer?"
Another nod.
Rebecca whispered,
"Who?"
David looked directly at Evelyn Carter.
Not Rebecca.
Not Ross.
Evelyn.
Then he quietly answered.
"The one person Samuel never suspected."
Before anyone could ask another questionâ
A sharp red laser dot appeared on David's forehead.
Rebecca saw it first.
"David!"
He understood instantly.
The sniper wasn't FBI.
It had come from outside the estate.
David smiled sadly.
"I told you..."
"They never leave witnesses."
The rifle fired.
The bullet shattered the stone pillar beside David's head.
He threw himself sideways just as a second shot ripped through the underground chamber.
Concrete exploded.
Dust filled the air.
The hidden mastermind had made their move.
Not to save David.
Not to silence Edward.
But to erase everyone who now knew the truth.

And somewhere beyond the smoke...
The real architect of the conspiracy was still watching.
