CHAPTER 10:The Seventy-Two Hours Expire

Exactly seventy-two hours after Evelyn Carter walked out of the Holloway mansion with her daughter...
The sun rose over Chicago beneath a blanket of cold gray clouds.
The deadline had arrived.
Grant Holloway expected one thing.
A frightened mother.
A broken daughter.
A desperate apology.
Instead...
Everything he had built was beginning to crack.
At 6:00 a.m., Carter's Table was already full.
Customers lined the sidewalk before the doors opened.
Some had driven through the night from neighboring states.
Others simply wanted breakfast.
Many came because they wanted Evelyn to know one thing.
She wasn't standing alone anymore.
Inside the kitchen, George looked through the dining room and smiled.
"I've never seen anything like this."
Linda laughed as she refilled another coffee pot.
"Neither has Chicago."
Evelyn stood quietly near the old window overlooking the street.
She wasn't watching the customers.
She was watching Hannah.
Her daughter was helping carry plates again.
The movements were hesitant.
The smile still fragile.
But every step was stronger than the day before.
For the first time in years...
Hannah looked alive.
At precisely 8:00 a.m., Rebecca Pierce arrived carrying a thick leather portfolio.
Behind her walked Detective Michael Torres.
And beside him...
Special Agent Daniel Ross.
Evelyn immediately knew something had changed.
Rebecca placed the portfolio on the counter.
"We've received federal authorization."
"For what?"
Ross answered.
"Everything."
He opened the folder.
Search warrants.
Financial subpoenas.
Corporate preservation orders.
Requests for archived bank records.
"We're no longer investigating only domestic abuse."
"We're investigating organized financial fraud."
"And potentially..."
He paused.
"...a homicide."
The diner fell silent.
Hannah slowly lowered the coffee pot she was holding.
"My father?"
Ross nodded.
"We're not making conclusions."
"But we are following the evidence."
For the first time since Samuel Carter's death...
Someone in authority had finally spoken those words aloud.
Across the city...
Grant adjusted his tie while staring at his reflection.
He refused to believe today would end differently.
Money always won.
Power always survived.
People like Evelyn Carter always ran out of hope.
His assistant entered nervously.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"The media is outside."
Grant smiled.
"Good."
"They'll watch Mrs. Carter beg."
His phone rang.
Margaret.
"Have they arrived?"
Grant glanced through the office window.
"No."
"They'll come."
"They have no choice."
Margaret sounded pleased.
"I've already prepared the divorce documents."
Grant laughed.
"By lunchtime..."
"...this nightmare will be over."
Neither of them noticed the first satellite news truck parking across the street.
At 10:15 a.m., Arthur Holloway walked into Carter's Table.
The diner became silent.
People recognized him immediately.
The billionaire founder.
The patriarch of the Holloway empire.
He removed his hat respectfully.
Then walked directly toward Evelyn.
"I'm sorry."
Two simple words.
Spoken without excuses.
Without pride.
Without conditions.
Evelyn looked at him carefully.
"You didn't hurt my daughter."
"No."
"But I helped create the people who did."
Arthur reached into his coat.
He placed Samuel Carter's handwritten letter on the counter.
"I think this belongs with your family."
Hannah slowly unfolded the letter.
By the second paragraph...
She was crying.
By the last sentence...
So was Evelyn.
Arthur lowered his head.
"Samuel was a better man than most wealthy people I've ever known."
"I failed him."
"I won't fail him again."
Meanwhile...
Victor Kane drove toward the abandoned storage facility where Frank waited with the surveillance tapes.
His mind refused to settle.
For twelve years...
He had believed he worked for imperfect people.
Not murderers.
When he arrived...
The storage unit stood open.
Victor frowned.
"Frank?"
No answer.
He stepped inside.
The cardboard box lay overturned.
The VHS tapes were scattered across the concrete floor.
One shelf had been knocked over.
There were signs of a struggle.
Then...
Victor saw blood.
Only a few drops.
Fresh.
His heartbeat accelerated.
"Frank!"
Still nothing.
Near the back wall...
He found Frank's glasses.
Broken.
Victor immediately called Detective Torres.
"I think someone got here before me."
At noon...
Grant finally lost his patience.
"They're not coming."
Margaret's voice exploded through the phone.
"What do you mean they're not coming?"
"They're supposed to be begging!"
Grant slammed his fist onto the desk.
Instead of Evelyn...
His receptionist entered.
"Sir..."
"There are federal agents here."
Grant smiled coldly.
"Tell them to make an appointment."
"They already have one."
Before Grant could respond...
Three FBI agents entered.
Daniel Ross walked in behind them.
"Mr. Holloway."
Grant remained seated.
"Can I help you?"
Ross calmly placed another document on the desk.
"This is a federal search warrant."
"We'll be collecting financial records."
Grant barely glanced at it.
"My attorneysâ"
"Have already been notified."
Ross interrupted him.
Grant stood.
"This is harassment."
"No."
Ross answered evenly.
"This is procedure."
Two agents began removing computer hard drives.
Others boxed accounting files.
Employees watched in stunned silence.
No one moved.
No one dared interfere.
At the same time...
Television stations interrupted their regular programming.
BREAKING NEWS
FBI Agents Enter Holloway Select Markets Headquarters.
Cameras captured employees carrying boxes.
Reporters crowded the sidewalks.
Investors began calling.
Share prices fell.
Eight percent.
Then twelve.
Then seventeen.
Inside the boardroom...
Richard Lawson quietly watched the stock ticker.
One director whispered,
"We're collapsing."
Richard answered softly,
"No."
"We're finally paying the bill."
Back at Carter's Table...
Rebecca's phone rang.
She answered immediately.
It was Victor.
"I found the storage unit."
"And?"
"Frank is gone."
Rebecca's expression changed.
"What?"
"There was blood."
"The tapes are missing."
Torres grabbed the phone.
"Stay where you are."
"I'm sending officers."
Victor lowered his voice.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"I think they're cleaning up old evidence."
Torres didn't answer.
Because he had reached the same conclusion.
Someone wasn't simply protecting Grant anymore.
Someone was erasing history.
Late that afternoon...
Arthur received another phone call.
It came from the nursing home.
The nurse sounded frightened.
"Mr. Holloway..."
"Helen Brooks is missing."
Arthur's blood ran cold.
"What do you mean missing?"
"She disappeared an hour ago."
"Her wheelchair was found outside."
"No one saw who took her."
Arthur slowly lowered the phone.
First Frank.
Now Helen.
The two oldest witnesses connected to Samuel Carter...
Had vanished on the same day.
This wasn't coincidence.
Someone had begun hunting witnesses.
That evening...
As Carter's Table prepared to close...
A black sedan stopped across the street.
Not the Holloway security SUV.
A different vehicle.
A man stepped out.
Tall.
Gray hair.
A deep scar running from his left temple to his jaw.
He stood silently, watching the diner.
Watching Evelyn.
Watching Hannah.
Then he quietly returned to his car.
He never came inside.
He never spoke.
As the sedan pulled away...
George happened to glance through the front window.
His face turned white.
Evelyn noticed immediately.
"George?"
He couldn't answer.
"George... what's wrong?"
His voice barely escaped his throat.
"I know that man."
The room became still.
"Who is he?" Rebecca asked.
George swallowed hard.
"I worked one summer at the Holloway warehouse."
"He was always there."
"The security chief."
"The man everyone feared."
Rebecca stepped closer.
"Do you remember his name?"
George nodded slowly.
Every syllable seemed heavier than the last.
"Michael Donnelly."
The scarred man everyone believed had disappeared twenty-four years ago...
Was alive.
And after all these years...
May you like
He had finally returned.
