Chapter 13 – Every Bank Account Frozen

The first call came at 8:01 a.m.

Richard Ashford barely looked at his phone.

He had spent the night in a federal holding suite—not because he had been convicted, but because the court considered him a flight risk after the attempted attack on Lily at St. Matthew's Hospital.

His tailored suit was wrinkled for the first time in years.

His expensive watch had been taken during processing.

His confidence, however, remained intact.

He glanced at the screen.

PRIVATE BANKING DIVISION

He answered with an impatient sigh.

"What now?"

The voice on the other end was trembling.

"Mr. Ashford..."

"There has been... an issue."

Richard frowned.

"What kind of issue?"

"I'm afraid your personal accounts have been frozen."

He laughed.

"No."

"There must be a mistake."

"I've already confirmed it with Compliance."

"The order came from the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force."

"They've frozen every account registered in your name."

Richard's smile disappeared.

Within the next three minutes...

His phone rang six more times.

Every call carried the same message.

The Swiss account.

Frozen.

The Cayman trust.

Frozen.

His investment portfolio.

Frozen.

His executive retirement fund.

Frozen.

His private aviation account.

Frozen.

Even the education trust he had established years earlier had been placed under emergency review.

For the first time in nearly two decades...

Richard Ashford couldn't access a single dollar.

At the Federal Command Center...

Daniel Brooks stood before a massive financial dashboard stretching across three monitors.

Green lines represented active assets.

Red lines represented assets under federal control.

As another preservation order was approved, the screen lit up.

Ross stepped beside him.

"Status?"

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Every major institution has complied."

"Domestic?"

"All frozen."

"International?"

"Most."

"What about shell companies?"

Daniel enlarged a complex web of corporations.

"They're collapsing."

Ross folded her arms.

"Explain."

"When investigators froze Richard's operating accounts, dozens of hidden companies automatically failed their liquidity requirements."

He clicked another screen.

One after another, anonymous holding companies entered default.

Each failure triggered another.

Like dominoes.

Arthur watched quietly.

"Money leaves footprints."

Daniel nodded.

"And we've finally got enough light to see them."

At Ashford Development Group headquarters...

Employees arrived to discover chaos.

Security badges no longer worked.

Payroll software had been suspended.

Corporate credit cards declined.

The executive elevator had been locked by court order.

The reception lobby, once decorated with marble and fresh flowers, now echoed with anxious whispers.

One accountant looked at another.

"My paycheck bounced."

"It can't."

"It did."

Inside the boardroom, Acting Chief Financial Officer Nathan Pierce addressed the remaining executives.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"Our operating accounts are inaccessible."

Someone interrupted.

"How long?"

"I don't know."

Another executive slammed a folder onto the table.

"Our suppliers have stopped deliveries."

"Our insurance carrier canceled our liability coverage."

"The banks want immediate repayment."

Nathan lowered his voice.

"And the bondholders are demanding emergency liquidation."

The room fell silent.

Richard's empire wasn't merely shrinking.

It was starving.

Meanwhile...

Arthur sat beside Lily's hospital bed.

She looked stronger.

The swelling around her face had begun to fade.

Her voice, however, remained soft.

"They're taking everything from him."

Arthur nodded.

"They're preserving evidence."

She looked toward the window.

"I used to think money made him powerful."

Arthur smiled gently.

"No."

"It made people afraid to challenge him."

Lily turned back.

"And now?"

Arthur answered quietly.

"Now they're discovering he was never as untouchable as they believed."

Across town...

Victoria Ashford paced furiously inside her attorney's office.

"This is ridiculous!"

"My accounts have nothing to do with Richard!"

Attorney Helen Graves remained calm.

"Mrs. Ashford..."

"The transfers originated from accounts you controlled."

"I signed documents my son gave me!"

Helen looked directly at her.

"That defense works only if you didn't know."

Victoria hesitated.

"And if I did?"

Helen closed the file.

"Then you're facing conspiracy charges."

Victoria's face turned pale.

For the first time...

She understood that money could no longer protect her family.

At noon...

Daniel called everyone into the operations room.

"I've got something."

He projected a map showing dozens of frozen accounts.

Most belonged to Richard.

Several belonged to city officials.

One belonged to an unexpected name.

Chief Harold Donovan.

Ross narrowed her eyes.

"The police chief."

Daniel nodded.

"We've traced nearly nine years of monthly deposits."

Arthur wasn't surprised.

"He wasn't protecting Richard."

"He was on his payroll."

Maria crossed her arms.

"That explains every ignored complaint."

Daniel clicked another file.

"It gets worse."

Several judges.

Two building inspectors.

A state licensing commissioner.

A hospital administrator.

Even a charity director.

Every one of them had received money flowing through Richard's shell companies.

Ross looked around the room.

"This wasn't corruption."

She paused.

"It was infrastructure."

Arthur nodded.

"Richard didn't buy favors."

"He built a system."

While investigators celebrated the breakthrough...

Victor Kane watched from the underground operations center.

One of his analysts spoke carefully.

"Richard's financial network is gone."

Victor looked almost bored.

"It served its purpose."

"What about Ashford himself?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"He still believes money was his greatest asset."

The analyst frowned.

"It wasn't?"

Victor turned toward a large digital wall displaying photographs.

Arthur.

Lily.

Ross.

Daniel.

Sophia.

David Mercer.

Each face connected by red lines.

"No."

Victor answered.

"People are always the real currency."

That afternoon...

Richard finally met with his attorney.

Michael Benton looked exhausted.

"I have good news."

Richard leaned forward.

"Finally."

"They haven't charged you with financial fraud."

Richard exhaled.

"But..."

Richard's expression hardened.

"What?"

"They're charging you with something else."

Benton slid a thick folder across the table.

Richard opened it.

Inside were witness statements.

Margaret Ellis.

Samuel Ortiz.

Emily Carter.

Reverend Thomas Greene.

Sophia Bennett.

Dozens more.

Each statement described years of abuse.

Years of intimidation.

Years of silence.

Richard looked up slowly.

"They're lying."

Benton didn't answer.

"They coordinated this."

Still...

Silence.

Richard slammed the folder shut.

"They can't prove it."

Benton quietly placed one final item on the table.

Lily's recovered audio recording.

The recording Richard believed had been destroyed.

Richard stared at it.

His face lost all color.

"Where..."

"...did they get this?"

Benton whispered,

"I don't know."

Back at the command center...

Daniel smiled as another forensic process completed.

"We restored eighty-seven percent."

Ross looked over.

"Of the recording?"

Daniel nodded.

Richard's voice filled the speakers.

"Call the police."

"Let's see which one of us leaves here in handcuffs."

Then another section.

"Half the people in this room owe me money, jobs, or favors."

The room remained silent.

Richard had confessed to corruption without realizing he was being recorded.

Arthur looked toward Lily.

She quietly wiped away a tear.

"You kept fighting."

She shook her head.

"I just wanted someone to believe me."

Arthur gently squeezed her hand.

"They do now."

As night fell...

Federal agents executed one final financial warrant.

A little-known private vault beneath Ashford Tower was opened under court supervision.

Inside were gold bars.

Bearer bonds.

Rare artwork.

And one locked steel briefcase.

Daniel carefully bypassed the biometric lock.

The lid opened.

No cash.

No jewelry.

Only documents.

The first page bore a familiar symbol.

A black phoenix.

Arthur stepped closer.

He recognized it immediately.

"It can't be..."

Ross looked at him.

"What is it?"

Arthur slowly lifted the top file.

Across the cover, stamped in faded red ink, were the words:

PROJECT PHOENIX – CONTINGENCY PROTOCOL

Someone had copied classified documents that should have been destroyed fifteen years earlier.

Before anyone could examine the contents...

Daniel's computer chimed with a priority alert.

A secure message had arrived through an old military satellite frequency.

No sender.

No signature.

Only one sentence:

Freezing Richard's money was easy.

Freezing what's coming next... won't be.

Arthur looked toward the dark window.

Somewhere beyond the city lights...

Victor Kane was already several moves ahead.

Richard's empire had finally begun to collapse.

But Arthur knew the truth.

Richard had never been the endgame.

May you like

He had only been the door.

And something far more dangerous was now walking through it.
