Chapter 9: The Test He Never Expected

The hospital corridor was silent when Daniel finally arrived.

He had come alone.

No lawyers.

No assistants.

No security team.

For the first time in years, the billionaire who could make entire boardrooms fall silent looked like an ordinary man who had run out of answers.

I was standing beside the twins’ hospital room when he stopped several feet away.

“Where are they?”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

I didn't answer immediately.

Instead, I looked through the glass.

Emma was asleep beneath a white blanket.

Ethan sat beside her bed, clutching his favorite little dinosaur.

They looked peaceful.

They looked innocent.

And they looked so much like him that sometimes even I couldn't ignore it.

Daniel swallowed.

“Are they mine?”

The question should have broken me.

Instead, it made me strangely calm.

“You already know the answer.”

“No.” He shook his head. “I need proof.”

“You've always needed proof.”

His eyes met mine.

There was pain in them now.

Years ago, when I had told him I was pregnant, he had demanded proof that the child was his.

When doctors told him I might never conceive, he had believed them without questioning anything.

When his mother told him I had trapped him with a pregnancy that wasn't possible, he had believed her.

And when he divorced me...

He hadn't even looked back.

Now he wanted certainty.

“Then let's get the test,” I said.

His jaw tightened.

“A DNA test?”

“Yes.”

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

“Tomorrow.”

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Tonight.”

For the first time, I saw something unfamiliar in Daniel's expression.

Fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of scandal.

Fear of discovering that the two children behind that glass were the family he had destroyed himself to escape.

A doctor came toward us carrying a folder.

“Mrs. Carter?”

I turned.

“Yes?”

“We've reviewed the twins' records.”

Daniel immediately looked at the doctor.

“What records?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then he looked at me.

“There is something you should both know.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Their blood type.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What about it?”

The doctor opened the folder.

“The twins' blood type is extremely rare.”

Daniel's face changed.

“What type?”

The doctor told him.

He went completely still.

Because Daniel knew that blood type.

It was the same rare blood type his father had carried.

The same one Daniel himself had.

The doctor continued.

“It's not impossible, but it's uncommon enough that the genetic connection should be investigated.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You knew?”

“I knew their blood type.”

“But you never told me.”

“You never asked.”

Silence filled the corridor.

Then Daniel's phone began ringing.

He glanced at the screen.

His mother.

He rejected the call.

It rang again.

He rejected it again.

A third time.

This time, he answered.

“What?”

His mother's voice was faint but furious through the phone.

“Daniel, don't do this.”

His expression hardened.

“Don't do what?”

“You cannot let her manipulate you again.”

He looked through the glass at the twins.

“I'm getting a DNA test.”

There was silence.

Then his mother's voice changed.

“Daniel... listen to me.”

He froze.

Something in her tone made his eyes narrow.

“Why?”

“Because there are things about that pregnancy you don't know.”

My heart stopped.

Daniel's voice dropped.

“What things?”

His mother didn't answer.

Instead, she said four words that made the entire world seem to tilt beneath my feet.

“Ask your father.”

The call ended.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

I stared at him.

“What did she mean?”

He didn't answer.

He was already walking away.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he turned toward me.

“If what she said is true…”

His voice broke.

“…then our divorce wasn't an accident.”

He walked down the corridor.

And I stood there, staring after him.

Because for the first time in five years, I wondered whether the woman who had destroyed our marriage had been telling only half the story.

And somewhere inside the Carter family mansion, an old secret was waiting to be uncovered.

May you like

A secret that could explain why my pregnancy had been called impossible.

And why someone had desperately wanted Daniel to believe our children could never exist.
