Chapter 16: The Man Behind the Bloodline

The black car disappeared into the rain before Daniel could see its license plate.
But one thing stayed with him.
The photograph.
Someone had been watching his family.
Someone who knew about Claire.
Someone who knew about the twins.
And, most terrifying of all, someone who had been planning this for twenty-three years.
At the police station, Daniel refused to leave Claire and the children.
The twins slept together on a narrow couch in the interview room, exhausted after everything they'd endured.
Claire sat beside them.
Daniel stood near the window.
For the first time since the nightmare began, there was silence.
Then Claire spoke.
“You're still angry with me.”
Daniel turned.
“I am.”
She lowered her eyes.
“But I'm more angry with myself.”
“Why?”
“Because five years ago, I should have fought harder.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You tried.”
“I disappeared.”
“You were threatened.”
“I should have found another way.”
Daniel walked toward her.
“You were pregnant, alone, and being hunted by my family.”
Claire looked at him.
“I still should have told you.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“I should have believed you.”
Their eyes met.
Neither needed to say anything else.
Then a small voice came from the couch.
“Daddy?”
Daniel turned.
Emma was awake.
He immediately went to her.
“I'm here.”
She reached for his hand.
“Are we going home?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“Your home?”
He looked at Claire.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“Our home,” she whispered.
Emma smiled and closed her eyes again.
Daniel held her tiny hand.
For five years, he'd never known what it felt like to be called Daddy.
Now he never wanted to lose it.
At 3:17 a.m., Michael entered the room.
His expression was grim.
“I found something.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
Michael placed an old photograph on the table.
It showed three young men standing outside a warehouse.
Daniel recognized his father.
He recognized Michael's father.
But the third man—
Daniel had never seen him before.
“Who is he?”
Michael stared at the photograph.
“Victor Hale.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who's Victor Hale?”
“The man who financed your father's first company.”
Claire's face changed.
“Victor Hale?”
Michael nodded.
“You know him?”
Claire slowly shook her head.
“No.”
Then she remembered something.
“Wait.”
She opened her purse and pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this at my father's house years ago.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
LOCAL BUSINESSMAN AND WIFE KILLED IN FIERY CRASH
Daniel looked at the date.
Twenty-three years ago.
His eyes moved to the names.
Thomas and Evelyn Reed.
Michael went completely still.
“My parents.”
Daniel looked up.
“But I thought…”
“That they died in an accident?”
Michael's voice was cold.
“So did everyone.”
Claire handed him another document.
“I found this behind a photograph frame.”
Michael opened it.
It was an insurance report.
The cause of death had been listed as accidental fire.
But at the bottom was a handwritten note.
Brake lines were cut.
Michael's face drained of color.
Daniel looked at him.
“Someone murdered your parents.”
Michael nodded slowly.
“And your family covered it up.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
Then he noticed a signature.
Victor Hale.
His blood ran cold.
“He ordered it.”
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, he pulled out the flash drive recovered from the vault.
“I thought this would prove it.”
He connected it to a laptop.
Hundreds of encrypted files appeared.
Financial transfers.
Bank accounts.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
Then one folder appeared.
PROJECT HEIR.
Daniel frowned.
“What is that?”
Michael opened it.
The first file contained a medical report.
Claire's name.
Then another.
Daniel's name.
Then another.
The twins.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“What the hell is this?”
Michael opened the final document.
A sentence appeared:
THE CHILDREN MUST REMAIN UNDER OBSERVATION UNTIL THE PATERNAL LINE IS CONFIRMED.
Claire stood abruptly.
“Observation?”
Daniel's face hardened.
“They've been tracking my children since birth.”
Michael nodded.
“But there's more.”
He opened another file.
A surveillance photograph appeared.
Claire leaving the hospital five years earlier.
Another photograph.
The twins as newborns.
Another.
The twins at age three.
Another.
Emma and Ethan entering kindergarten.
Daniel felt sick.
Someone had been watching them their entire lives.
Then Michael opened the final video.
A man's face appeared on the screen.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Calm.
Daniel froze.
“I know him.”
Claire turned.
“Who?”
Daniel stared.
“He was at my father's funeral.”
Michael whispered:
“Victor Hale.”
The man on the screen smiled.
Then he spoke.
“Daniel Carter, if you're watching this, you've discovered the truth.”
He leaned toward the camera.
“Your mother was never the mastermind.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“She was only protecting me.”
Claire whispered:
“Protecting you from what?”
Victor smiled.
“From your real father.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
The video continued.
“You believe Arthur Carter is your father.”
A pause.
“He isn't.”
Daniel's entire body went numb.
Victor looked directly into the camera.
“Your mother stole you from me.”
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then Emma suddenly screamed from the couch.
Daniel spun around.
His daughter was pointing toward the window.
A black car was parked across the street.
And someone inside was watching them.
Michael looked through the blinds.
His face went pale.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“That car has been following us since the hospital.”
Daniel looked at the sleeping children.
Then back at the car.
The headlights turned on.
The car began moving.
Daniel stepped toward the door.
Michael grabbed his arm.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
Michael stared at him.
“Because if Victor Hale is telling the truth…”
He paused.
“…then the man watching your children may not be your enemy.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Who is he?”
May you like
Michael whispered:
“Your biological father.”
