Chapter 17: The Father He Never Knew

Daniel stood frozen by the window.
The black car had vanished into the rain.
But Michael's words remained.
Your biological father.
Daniel turned slowly.
“You're telling me the man in that car is my father?”
Michael shook his head.
“No. I'm telling you we need to find out if Victor Hale was telling the truth.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Then let's find out.”
Two hours later, they were in the Carter Foundation's surviving records room.
The police had sealed most of the building, but Michael had managed to retrieve one final box before the vault collapsed.
Inside were old hospital records.
Birth certificates.
Insurance documents.
Photographs.
And one envelope marked:
DANIEL CARTER — CONFIDENTIAL
Daniel opened it.
His hands trembled.
The first document was a birth certificate.
His mother's name was listed.
His father's name was—
Arthur Carter.
Daniel exhaled.
“See?”
Michael shook his head.
“Look at the date.”
Daniel frowned.
His birth certificate had been issued three months after his actual birth.
“That's strange.”
“Look at the original.”
Michael placed another document beside it.
The original hospital record contained a different surname.
Daniel's eyes widened.
Daniel Hale.
Claire covered her mouth.
“No…”
Daniel stared at the page.
“My name was Hale?”
Michael nodded.
“Until someone changed it.”
Daniel felt as though the floor had disappeared.
“Why?”
Michael opened another file.
A DNA report.
It had been performed twenty-three years ago.
The names had been blacked out.
But the genetic comparison was still visible.
PATERNAL MATCH: 99.98%
Daniel stared at the number.
“Who?”
Michael slowly removed the blacked-out section.
Beneath it was a name.
Victor Hale.
Daniel stepped backward.
“No.”
Claire reached for him.
He pulled away—not from her, but from the truth itself.
“My entire life…”
His voice cracked.
“My entire life was a lie.”
Michael nodded.
“Arthur raised you.”
“But he isn't my father.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Did you know?”
Claire shook her head.
“I swear.”
Daniel believed her.
For once, he didn't hesitate.
Then another document caught his attention.
A handwritten note.
He recognized his mother's handwriting immediately.
I had no choice. Victor wanted his son back. Arthur promised to protect Daniel.
Daniel read it twice.
Then again.
“Victor wanted me?”
Michael nodded.
“Apparently.”
Claire picked up another page.
“This says Victor was involved in a custody dispute.”
Michael looked at it.
“Before Daniel was born.”
Daniel frowned.
“What happened?”
Michael's expression darkened.
“Victor was accused of murdering someone.”
“Who?”
“Your mother's first husband.”
Daniel froze.
“My mother's first husband?”
Michael nodded.
“Arthur wasn't Evelyn's first husband.”
Daniel stared at the document.
His entire family history was unraveling.
Arthur had raised another man's son.
Evelyn had hidden his true identity.
And Victor Hale had spent twenty-three years searching for him.
But there was one question Daniel couldn't escape.
“Why now?”
Michael looked at him.
“Because you have children.”
Daniel understood immediately.
The twins weren't simply heirs.
They were the continuation of Victor's bloodline.
And Victor wanted them.
That afternoon, Daniel returned to the hospital.
Claire and the twins were staying in a private security suite.
The children were asleep.
Claire sat beside them.
Daniel entered quietly.
“We need to leave.”
Claire looked up.
“Where?”
“Somewhere Victor can't find us.”
She stood.
“Daniel…”
“I know.”
He took her hand.
“I know who I am now.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
He looked at the twins.
“But I will be.”
Suddenly—
BANG!
The window shattered.
Daniel threw himself over Claire.
Security rushed into the room.
The twins screamed.
“Get them down!”
Another shot struck the wall.
Michael pulled Daniel toward the floor.
“Sniper!”
Daniel looked toward the window.
Across the street, on the roof of a neighboring building, a figure stood holding a rifle.
Then the figure lowered the weapon.
Instead of firing again, he turned and walked away.
Daniel stared.
“Why didn't he shoot?”
Michael looked at the rooftop.
“Because he wasn't trying to kill you.”
He pointed toward the floor.
Something had been thrown through the broken window.
A small black envelope.
Daniel picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Daniel as a newborn.
In the arms of a young man.
Victor Hale.
On the back was written:
I NEVER ABANDONED YOU.
Daniel's eyes burned.
Then he saw another line.
YOUR MOTHER LIED ABOUT WHY I LEFT.
Claire stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Daniel turned the photograph over.
His face changed.
The final sentence was written in red ink.
ASK HER WHO SHE KILLED TO KEEP YOU.
Daniel slowly looked at Claire.
But Claire wasn't looking at the photograph.
She was staring at the door.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“I know who he means.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“Who?”
Claire whispered:
“Your mother.”
Before Daniel could respond, the hospital lights went out.
The emergency alarms began screaming.
And from somewhere in the darkness came a woman's voice.
“Daniel…”
Evelyn.
“You finally learned who your father is.”
A pause.
“But you still don't know why I had to steal you from him.”
The emergency lights flickered on.
Evelyn stood at the end of the corridor.
Blood stained her sleeve.
Behind her were two armed guards.
She looked directly at Daniel.
Then smiled.
“Because Victor Hale wasn't trying to get his son back.”
Her smile disappeared.
“He was trying to get his heir back.”
And Daniel suddenly realized—
May you like
The man he'd spent his entire life calling a stranger might not want a son.
He might want the entire Carter empire.
