PART 4 – A New Beginning

Three days later, Anna went into labor.
The contractions came faster than anyone expected.
I drove through the rain with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding hers.
"You've got this," I whispered.
Hours later...
A tiny cry filled the delivery room.
Our daughter.
Healthy.
Perfect.
When the nurse placed her in Anna's arms, we both cried.
Not because the nightmare was over.
Because we had survived it.
A week later, we moved into a small apartment across town.
It wasn't fancy.
The furniture didn't match.
Half the boxes stayed unpacked for weeks.
But every room felt peaceful.
No yelling.
No fear.
No walking on eggshells.
One afternoon, Anna handed me a sealed envelope.
Inside were dozens of letters.
She had written one every time she thought she might not survive living under my mother's roof.
Letters to me.
Letters to our unborn daughter.
Letters filled with hope, fear, and unconditional love.
I couldn't finish reading them without breaking down.
That same day, I made another promise.
No matter who hurt my family...
No matter whose last name they carried...
I would never ignore the warning signs again.
Because protecting the people you love is never betrayal.

Sometimes...
It's the greatest act of love you'll ever choose.
