PART 3 – The Truth No One Could Deny

The recordings lasted over six hours.
Every insult.
Every threat.
Every cruel order.
One recording captured my mother saying,
"If that baby disappears before it's born, you'll have nobody to blame but yourself."
The room fell silent.
Even the officers exchanged uneasy looks.
My mother suddenly burst into tears.
"I didn't mean it."
"She's manipulating all of you."
But the lies were falling apart.
Then one officer asked if there were cameras inside the house.
I remembered the security system I had installed after a break-in the previous year.
I had forgotten one camera overlooked the kitchen.
The footage was still stored online.
I opened the app.
There it was.
Video after video.
My mother forcing Anna to stand for hours.
Ordering her to wash dishes in freezing water.
Pulling her hair.
Pushing her shoulders.
Even hiding food before I came home so she could tell me,
"Anna says she's not hungry."
I watched months of my own blindness.
Each clip felt like another knife twisting into my chest.
I had promised to protect my wife.
Instead...
I had unknowingly left her alone with her tormentor.
That morning, the police arrested my mother on charges of assault, intimidation, and elder abuse laws that also protected vulnerable adults, including pregnant women.
As they placed her in the patrol car, she looked at me.
"You chose her over your own mother."
I met her eyes.
"No."
"I chose what was right."
The cruiser drove away.
Anna squeezed my hand.
May you like
For the first time in months...
She smiled.
