PART 2 – The Night Everything Changed

"Take your hands off my wife."

My voice barely rose above a whisper.

It didn't have to.

The look on my face said everything.

My mother's fingers loosened from Anna's hair.

For the first time in my life, she looked afraid of me.

"Oh, sweetheart," she laughed nervously. "You're misunderstanding."

"I was helping her."

I stepped between them.

Anna nearly collapsed against my chest.

Her hands were so cold they felt like ice.

Her wrists were covered with tiny cuts from broken glass.

"What happened?" I asked softly.

She shook her head.

"Nothing."

That one word shattered me.

Nothing.

As if this had become normal.

As if pain had become part of her daily routine.

I wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

Then I looked at my mother.

"Go upstairs."

Her smile disappeared.

"You don't order me around in my own house."

I pulled out my phone.

"No."

I dialed 911.

My mother's face turned white.

"You wouldn't."

"I already am."

She lunged toward me, trying to knock the phone away.

The operator heard everything.

Every scream.

Every threat.

Every insult.

Within minutes, flashing red and blue lights filled the front yard.

The officers separated us.

Anna finally broke.

Between sobs, she confessed everything.

The forced chores.

The insults.

The meals my mother secretly threw away.

The nights she made a woman who was nine months pregnant scrub floors on her hands and knees.

The bruises.

The fear.

The threats.

Then an officer asked a question that changed everything.

"Do you have any proof?"

Anna looked at me.

Then slowly nodded.

"I've been recording everything."

She reached into the pocket of her oversized sweater.

Inside was an old voice recorder.

She had been carrying it for weeks.

Because deep down...

May you like

She knew one day no one would believe her unless she had evidence.

My mother stopped smiling.
