Chapter 9 - THE CURE THEY NEVER WANTED HER TO HAVE

Marcus explained the impossible carefully.

Meridian could not make paralyzed people suddenly walk.

It was not magic.

It was not a miracle injection.

The original research combined regenerative scaffolds, stimulation, intensive rehabilitation, and highly selective surgical interventions.

Results varied.

Some patients regained sensation.

Some gained limited movement.

A few recovered functional mobility.

Most did not.

But even partial success could transform spinal medicine.

"Then why hide it?" Vivienne asked.

Marcus looked ashamed.

"Because Victor discovered scarcity made more money than access."

Private investors paid fortunes.

Unregistered overseas trials avoided regulation.

People desperate for hope became customers.

And when results failed, their data disappeared.

Charles had wanted legitimate clinical trials.

Victor wanted a kingdom no regulator could see.

Vivienne looked at her legs.

"Could Meridian help me?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I don't know."

"Could it have helped five years ago?"

"Possibly."

"Did Adrian know?"

"Yes."

That answer hurt worse than the rest.

Marcus had contacted Adrian after Vivienne's accident.

He begged him to move Vivienne to a specialized rehabilitation program.

Adrian refused.

Then Marcus received a photograph of his daughter leaving school.

He disappeared the next day.

Vivienne closed her eyes.

Adrian had stood beside her hospital bed and watched her grieve a future he knew might not have been lost.

"I want every record."

Marcus nodded.

"That's why I'm here."

He gave her a drive.

"Encrypted Meridian archive."

Elias examined it.

"Enough to prosecute Victor?"

"Enough to destroy Hartwell Medical if mishandled."

Vivienne looked up.

Patients.

Illegal research.

Executives.

Doctors.

Politicians.

Offshore payments.

Her father's company had become a weapon while she chaired charity galas.

"Open it."

Marcus shook his head.

"It requires two keys."

"Yours?"

"One."

"And the other?"

"Charles assigned it to the primary Hartwell heir."

Vivienne laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did."

"Where is it?"

Marcus looked at her.

"You've had it since your wedding."

Vivienne froze.

Her wedding ring.

She no longer wore it because of swelling after the poisoning.

Inside the band was a tiny inscription.

C.H. 0417.

She had always assumed it was her father's initials and wedding date.

Marcus explained that the sequence was cryptographic.

Vivienne stared at the ring.

Adrian had placed it on her finger fifteen years ago.

Her father had hidden the key to destroying Adrian's allies inside the symbol of their marriage.

They returned to Boston under increased protection.

Then the first blow landed.

Victor called an emergency board meeting.

His resolution declared Vivienne medically unstable.

Traumatized.

Potentially manipulated by a woman claiming to be her dead mother.

He demanded temporary control.

The vote would occur in forty-eight hours.

Vivienne smiled when Elias told her.

"Good."

Evelyn stared.

"Good?"

"They finally stopped hiding."

Vivienne looked at Marcus.

"Open Meridian."

He nodded.

"We need the ring."

Vivienne reached toward the small jewelry case beside her.

Empty.

Her wedding ring was gone.

Only four people had entered her room.

Vivienne.

Evelyn.

Elias.

And Dr. Naomi Chen.

Vivienne slowly looked toward the doorway.

May you like

Naomi was standing there.

And in her hand was the missing ring.
