Chapter 16 - THE CLUE ON THE FLOOR

Vivienne returned to the dining room.
Same table.
Same chandelier.
Same place she had nearly died.
This time, she came willingly.
She recreated every movement.
Plate.
Wheelchair.
Fall.
Dead switch.
Adrian standing over her.
Sloane near the staircase.
Then she noticed the wedding photograph.
It had fallen facedown before Adrian confronted her.
Why?
Because the wheelchair hit the bookcase.
But Charles had placed hidden material behind that frame.
What else had he placed nearby?
Vivienne examined the shelf.
A tiny black lens sat between two pieces of wood.
Camera.
Older than the current security system.
Hardwired.
Independent.
Elias traced the line.
It led beneath the floor.
To a recorder installed inside a sealed wall panel.
Vivienne stared.
"My father recorded the dining room?"
"Only when the dead switch activated."
Her heart accelerated.
They accessed the file.
Audio.
Video.
Everything.
Adrian admitting the allergic reaction was staged.
Sloane discussing the cover story.
Adrian instructing her to delay emergency services.
The slap.
The missing injector.
The confession.
It was enough.
Not just for attempted murder.
For conspiracy.
Obstruction.
Premeditation.
Vivienne sent copies to Ortiz, federal prosecutors, three independent attorneys, and an encrypted media archive.
No more single vault.
No more secret only one person could destroy.
Then another camera file appeared.
Recorded seven years earlier.
Charles Hartwell sat alone at the dining table.
Across from him sat Victor Dane.
Vivienne pressed play.
Victor said, "You should have stayed quiet."
Charles answered, "You killed Rebecca."
Victor smiled.
"I corrected a problem."
Vivienne's stomach turned.
Then Charles said something unexpected.
"Rourke has everything."
Victor's face changed.
"He'll never use it."
"He will if you touch my daughters."
Vivienne froze.
Daughters.
Plural.
Victor leaned forward.
"You still think Sloane is yours?"
Vivienne stopped the recording.
No one moved.
Elias whispered, "Play it."
She did.
Charles's face became furious.
"Blood doesn't make a daughter."
Victor smiled.
"No."
"But secrets make excellent weapons."
The video ended.
Vivienne stared at the blank screen.
Sloane was not Charles Hartwell's biological daughter.
Evelyn had never mentioned it.
Victor knew.
Maybe that was why he had manipulated Sloane.
Maybe that was why Charles's trust favored Vivienne.
Not because he loved one daughter more.
Because he had been protecting a secret.
Vivienne called her mother in federal custody.
Evelyn went silent.
"Who is Sloane's father?"
A long pause.
Then Evelyn answered.
"Thomas Rourke."
Vivienne closed her eyes.
Adrian and Sloane.
Half siblings.

Neither of them had known.
And suddenly Victor Dane's cruelty reached a level none of them had imagined.
