Chapter 17 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Sloane vomited when Vivienne told her.

Then she screamed.

Then she refused to believe it.

DNA confirmed the truth.

Thomas Rourke was the biological father of both Adrian and Sloane.

Different mothers.

Same father.

Victor had known for decades.

He deliberately pushed Adrian toward Vivienne.

Then later encouraged Adrian's relationship with Sloane through carefully planted opportunities and lies.

He had turned an entire family into a weapon against itself.

Sloane asked one question.

"Did Dad know?"

Vivienne understood who she meant.

Charles.

"Yes."

"Did he hate me?"

"No."

"How do you know?"

Vivienne gave her the recording.

Charles's voice.

Blood doesn't make a daughter.

Sloane broke down.

For the first time, Vivienne held her.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But grief.

The next morning, Vivienne walked into Hartwell Medical's emergency shareholder meeting.

Not physically.

She entered in her wheelchair.

And for once, she did not feel diminished by it.

Malcolm Pierce attempted to stop her.

Elias handed him the trust.

His face drained.

Vivienne took her place at the head of the table.

"Yesterday you voted to remove me."

Silence.

"Today I'm dissolving your authority to do so."

She presented the attempted murder clause.

Then the recordings.

Then the payments.

Then Charles's video.

Three directors resigned before lunch.

Two called attorneys.

Malcolm attempted to leave.

Federal agents were waiting outside.

Vivienne reinstated herself temporarily for one purpose.

Independent forensic audit.

No family control.

No internal legal review.

Everything opened to regulators.

Every Meridian transaction.

Every offshore clinic.

Every executive account.

Reporters gathered outside.

Vivienne faced them herself.

"I inherited a company built to heal people."

Her voice did not shake.

"Parts of that company were used to exploit them."

"I will not protect the Hartwell name from the truth."

"I will protect the people harmed by it."

That statement destroyed billions in market value.

It also saved the company's soul.

That evening, Evelyn's charges were reduced pending review after evidence showed federal officials had helped create her false identity years earlier as part of a sealed witness-protection arrangement.

Vivienne thought the war might finally be turning.

Then Ortiz called.

"We found Victor."

"Where?"

"Your father's mausoleum."

Vivienne frowned.

"Alive?"

"No one is there."

"Then what did you find?"

Ortiz sent a photograph.

Inside Charles Hartwell's crypt, investigators found an empty coffin.

Charles's remains were gone.

On the stone wall, someone had painted a message.

THE LAST PROOF DIES WITH THE FATHER.

Victor had taken Charles's body.

And Vivienne knew exactly why.

An autopsy could prove Charles had been murdered.
