CHAPTER 17 — The Mother They Came to Silence

The words hung in the air like smoke.

Next target: Margaret Carter.

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

Detective Bennett read the final line again, hoping she had misunderstood.

She hadn't.

Thomas Whitmore slowly closed the journal.

"They're cleaning house."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They've lost Victor Kane."

"They've lost Charles Donovan."

"They've lost their financial network."

He looked at me.

"Now they're eliminating everyone who can identify them."

Margaret Carter.

The woman who had orchestrated my father's downfall.

The woman who had nearly killed Emily.

The woman who had tried to steal Noah.

She had become their next victim.

I should have felt satisfaction.

Instead...

I felt something colder.

If Margaret died...

The truth would die with her.

Detective Bennett didn't hesitate.

"Where is she?"

An FBI agent answered immediately.

"After the custody hearing, she was released under electronic monitoring."

"Current location?"

The agent looked at his screen.

"Her penthouse."

Bennett grabbed her radio.

"Dispatch every available unit."

"No sirens."

"No lights."

"If Subject Twenty-Seven reaches her first..."

"...we may never know who ordered Richard Carter's murder."

Thirty minutes later...

The convoy reached the luxury high-rise overlooking the river.

The streets were strangely quiet.

Too quiet.

The building concierge ran toward us before we reached the entrance.

"Officers!"

"You need to hurry!"

"What happened?"

"The cameras went offline ten minutes ago."

Detective Bennett's hand moved instinctively to her weapon.

"No elevator."

"We take the stairs."

Twenty-eight floors.

No one complained.

By the fifteenth floor, sweat covered every face.

By the twenty-third...

We heard something.

A dull metallic sound.

Then...

Silence.

When we reached the twenty-eighth floor...

Margaret's apartment door stood open.

No sign of forced entry.

The lights inside were on.

The dining table had been set for two people.

Two wine glasses.

One untouched.

One shattered on the floor.

"Clear!"

The tactical team swept through the penthouse.

Living room.

Kitchen.

Office.

Bedrooms.

Empty.

Until...

One officer shouted.

"Master bedroom!"

Margaret lay on the floor beside her bed.

Her breathing was shallow.

Blood stained the carpet beneath her shoulder.

She was alive.

Barely.

A paramedic immediately knelt beside her.

"Single gunshot."

"Entered through the shoulder."

"No exit wound."

Detective Bennett frowned.

"He didn't come to kill her."

"He came to question her."

Margaret slowly opened her eyes.

She looked confused.

Then she saw me.

For the first time in years...

There was no arrogance.

Only fear.

Real fear.

She reached toward me with trembling fingers.

"Daniel..."

I stood frozen.

The woman who had destroyed my family...

Was asking me for help.

"Where is he?" Bennett asked.

Margaret swallowed painfully.

"He..."

She coughed.

"...he wore a mask."

"What did he want?"

"He asked..."

Her breathing became uneven.

"...about Richard."

Thomas Whitmore stepped closer.

"What exactly did he ask?"

Margaret stared at the ceiling.

"He wanted..."

"...the ledger."

The room fell silent.

"What ledger?" Bennett demanded.

Margaret slowly turned her head.

"The black ledger."

Thomas's face changed instantly.

"No..."

He whispered.

"It still exists."

I looked at him.

"What are you talking about?"

He hesitated.

Then answered.

"Your father kept two records."

"One for the company."

"And one..."

"...for the organization."

Margaret managed a weak laugh.

"He found everything."

"He wrote down every payment."

"Every name."

"Every politician."

"Every judge."

"Every executive."

She coughed again.

"Every murder."

The room fell silent.

Bennett leaned closer.

"Where is the ledger?"

Margaret smiled faintly.

"If I tell you..."

"...they'll kill me."

Thomas answered quietly.

"They're already trying."

For a long moment...

Margaret stared at Noah's photograph sitting on a nearby shelf.

It had been taken during his first birthday.

She had placed it there herself.

The irony wasn't lost on me.

Finally...

She whispered,

"I never wanted children."

Everyone looked at her.

"I wanted power."

Another pause.

"I sacrificed..."

"...everyone."

Ryan.

Elias.

Evan.

Me.

Even Richard.

Tears filled her eyes.

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

Just silent tears sliding down her face.

"I thought..."

"...I could control monsters."

She closed her eyes.

"I was wrong."

Then she looked directly at me.

"Daniel..."

"I'm sorry."

The words sounded unfamiliar.

Almost impossible.

I searched her face.

For manipulation.

For calculation.

For another lie.

Instead...

I saw exhaustion.

A woman who had spent decades chasing power...

Only to lose everything.

Detective Bennett interrupted gently.

"The ledger."

Margaret nodded weakly.

"Richard hid it..."

"...where no one would ever look."

"Where?"

She smiled through the pain.

"He said..."

"'The safest place to hide the truth...'"

She struggled to breathe.

"...'is inside the lie everyone believes.'"

Thomas suddenly stood upright.

His eyes widened.

"Oh my God..."

He looked at me.

"I know where it is."

Before he could explain...

A deafening explosion shattered every window in the penthouse.

Glass erupted inward.

The lights went out.

Smoke filled the room.

"DOWN!"

The tactical team surrounded Margaret.

Gunfire echoed from the hallway.

One officer fell.

Another returned fire.

The apartment became a battlefield.

Detective Bennett pulled me behind a marble pillar.

"Sniper!"

Bullets tore through the living room.

Someone outside was covering the attackers.

Professional.

Coordinated.

Through the smoke...

A black-clad figure appeared in the hallway.

Tall.

Silent.

The tattoo behind his left ear was clearly visible.

Three black lines.

Subject Twenty-Seven.

Evan.

He never looked at anyone else.

Only Margaret.

She stared back at him.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

She whispered one word.

"...Evan?"

He stopped walking.

For the first time...

The emotionless assassin hesitated.

Just for a second.

Margaret reached toward him.

"My son..."

Silence.

He slowly raised his pistol.

The room held its breath.

Then...

Instead of shooting her...

He turned the weapon.

And fired twice...

At the masked sniper behind him.

The sniper collapsed instantly.

Evan looked back at Margaret.

His voice was cold.

Empty.

But the words changed everything.

"You were never my mother."

May you like

Then he disappeared into the smoke...

Before anyone could stop him.
