CHAPTER 15 â The Twin No One Was Supposed to Find

The room fell into stunned silence.
No one spoke.
No one even seemed to breathe.
I stared at Detective Bennett.
"That's impossible."
"Elias was in FBI custody."
She nodded.
"I know."
"Then how could his DNA be at the hospital?"
"It couldn't."
Another pause.
"Unless..."
She looked toward the forensic analyst.
The analyst slowly finished the sentence.
"...unless the DNA belongs to an identical twin."
Emily tightened her arms around Noah.
"Oh, God..."
Thomas Whitmore closed his eyes.
"No..."
His face had turned pale.
He looked older than he had an hour earlier.
Bennett noticed immediately.
"You know something."
Thomas didn't answer.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"You know something."
He slowly lowered himself into a chair.
"I prayed..."
"...this day would never come."
Everyone waited.
Finally...
Thomas looked directly at me.
"When Margaret became pregnant before meeting your father..."
"...she didn't give birth to one child."
Silence.
"She gave birth to twins."
The room froze.
I couldn't process the words.
"Twins?"
Thomas nodded.
"Two boys."
"Elias..."
"And?"
His voice became almost inaudible.
"Evan."
The name meant nothing to me.
But it clearly meant something to Detective Bennett.
She immediately called for another file.
Within minutes an FBI analyst returned carrying a tablet.
"There is an Evan Blackwood."
She searched again.
"No criminal history."
"No passport."
"No tax records."
"No driver's license."
No legal existence.
"How is that possible?"
Thomas answered quietly.
"Because he officially died..."
"...two days after birth."
The room remained silent.
Thomas continued.
"That's what Margaret told everyone."
"One baby survived."
"The other didn't."
He looked toward the window.
"I never believed her."
Emily frowned.
"If he didn't die..."
"Where has he been?"
No one had an answer.
The FBI analysts immediately searched international databases.
Nothing.
Military records.
Nothing.
Immigration.
Nothing.
It was as if Evan Blackwood had never existed.
Until...
One analyst stopped typing.
"I found something."
Everyone turned.
"It isn't under Blackwood."
She enlarged the screen.
"There was a DNA sample submitted eighteen years ago."
"For what?"
"An unidentified juvenile."
Another pause.
"He was recovered during a raid on an illegal private training facility."
The room grew quiet.
"What kind of training facility?"
The analyst swallowed.
"Children."
"They were training children."
Detective Bennett's expression hardened.
"Go on."
"The facility specialized in creating..."
She hesitated.
"...contract operatives."
No one spoke.
The analyst continued.
"The children had no names."
"Only numbers."
"They were taught surveillance."
"False identities."
"Combat."
"Psychological conditioning."
Thomas whispered,
"Oh, my God..."
The analyst opened the archived report.
One photograph appeared.
A boy.
Perhaps ten years old.
Dark hair.
Cold eyes.
Expressionless.
Even as a child...
There was something unsettling about him.
His file listed only one designation.
Subject 27.
DNA:
Partial maternal match.
Margaret Carter.
Emily covered her mouth.
"She sold him?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
"I don't know."
"But she abandoned him."
Detective Bennett immediately called the federal task force.
"If Evan survived..."
"And someone raised him to disappear..."
"He would become exactly the kind of operative capable of entering a hospital undetected."
She looked at the fake doctor's photograph again.
Every movement.
Every decision.
Every escape route.
Professional.
Calculated.
Almost military.
Just then...
The forensic analyst enlarged the security footage from the hospital.
This time...
Not the face.
The neck.
"There."
A small tattoo.
Barely visible behind the left ear.
Three black lines.
Thomas stood so quickly his chair tipped over.
"I know that symbol."
"You do?"
He nodded.
"I saw it once."
"Where?"
He looked at me.
"In your father's files."
An hour later, we returned to the FBI field office.
Thomas opened one of Richard Carter's hidden notebooks.
Near the final pages...
A hand-drawn sketch.
Three black lines.
Exactly the same.
Beneath it...
Richard had written one sentence.
The Brotherhood of Ash.
Detective Bennett frowned.
"I've never heard of them."
The FBI agent beside her had.
His face immediately changed.
"Oh, no..."
"What?"
"They're real."
He pulled up a classified database.
Access restricted.
Multiple warnings appeared.
After entering his credentials...
A sealed intelligence file opened.
BROTHERHOOD OF ASH
Status:
Active.
International.
Specialization:
Corporate assassinations.
Political disappearances.
Identity manipulation.
Recruitment of abandoned children.
My blood ran cold.
The agent continued reading.
"Authorities believe the organization has existed for over forty years."
"Members rarely know each other's real names."
"Most operatives are recruited before age ten."
Emily whispered,
"Children..."
The agent nodded.
"They're easier to control."
Thomas slowly sat down again.
"Richard found them."
Everyone looked at him.
"My God..."
"He wasn't investigating financial fraud."
"He uncovered..."
"...an international criminal organization."
Suddenly...
Everything made sense.
The stolen money.
The fake companies.
Victor Kane.
Charles Donovan.
The murdered attacker.
Even Elias.
The company had never been the final goal.
Carter Industries...
Had been a money-laundering machine.
Detective Bennett looked at me.
"Daniel..."
"I think your father was killed..."
"...because he accidentally discovered something far bigger than your family."
Before anyone could respond...
An alarm sounded throughout FBI headquarters.
Red emergency lights began flashing.
Agents rushed into the hallway.
One shouted,
"Cyberattack!"
Another yelled,
"They're inside our system!"
Computer screens across the operations center suddenly went black.
Then...
Every monitor displayed the same message.
White letters.
Black background.
STOP LOOKING FOR EVAN.
The message disappeared.
Replaced by a live video feed.
Emily gasped.
"No..."
The camera showed Noah's hospital room.
Empty.
The bassinet...
Was vacant.
Then the screen shifted.
A masked man held Noah in his arms.
Behind him stood another figure.
Tall.
Motionless.
Only his face remained hidden in darkness.
Then he stepped forward...
Just enough for the light to reveal the tattoo behind his left ear.
Three black lines.
The man smiled into the camera.
And spoke his very first words.
"Tell Mother..."
May you like
"...I'm finally coming home."
The screen went black.
