CHAPTER 10 — The Custody Trap

The courtroom was already full when we arrived.

8:00 a.m.

Not a minute late.

Detective Bennett walked beside me.

Emily remained at the hospital under police protection. Dr. Harris had refused to discharge her, citing her medical condition. Noah stayed in the hospital nursery with two officers outside the door.

No one was taking chances.

As I stepped into Family Courtroom Four, every head turned.

At the opposite table...

My mother sat perfectly composed.

She wore a navy-blue suit.

Pearl earrings.

A silver cross around her neck.

To anyone walking in, she looked like the picture of a devoted grandmother.

Ryan sat beside her, flipping through a stack of legal documents.

When our eyes met, he smiled.

It wasn't warm.

It was confident.

As if he believed he'd already won.

"Mr. Carter."

I turned.

A gray-haired man extended his hand.

"My name is Jonathan Reeves."

"I'm representing your mother."

"I don't believe we've met."

"We haven't."

His handshake was firm.

"But I hope we can resolve this without unnecessary conflict."

I looked past him at my mother.

She never looked at me.

She simply adjusted the cuff of her sleeve.

Like this hearing was another business meeting.

Our attorney, assigned through the district attorney's office because of the ongoing criminal investigation, hurried toward us.

"We've got a problem."

"What now?"

He handed me a copy of the petition.

"They're claiming Emily suffers from untreated postpartum psychosis."

My chest tightened.

"What?"

"They've attached hospital records."

I grabbed the file.

My stomach dropped.

The documents were real.

The three hospital visits.

The medication.

The confusion.

The altered medical records.

Everything Margaret had carefully staged.

She had built the evidence herself.

And now...

She intended to use it.

The judge entered.

"All rise."

Everyone stood.

After the formalities, the judge looked toward Margaret's attorney.

"Mr. Reeves."

"You may proceed."

Reeves walked calmly to the center of the courtroom.

"Your Honor..."

"My client appears today out of one concern."

"The safety of her grandson."

He paused dramatically.

"We have substantial evidence that the child's mother suffers from severe mental instability."

He held up the medical records.

"Three emergency hospitalizations."

"Repeated medication."

"Disorientation."

"Memory loss."

Every sentence felt like another knife.

Because each fact was technically true.

Only the reason behind it had been hidden.

Then Reeves delivered the next blow.

"The father, Daniel Carter..."

"...is currently the subject of a homicide investigation."

Murmurs spread through the courtroom.

My attorney immediately stood.

"Objection."

"The statement is misleading."

The judge nodded.

"Sustained."

Reeves smiled politely.

"My apologies."

He corrected himself.

"Mr. Carter is involved in an investigation concerning his late father's death."

He turned toward the judge again.

"Regardless..."

"The child currently has no safe parent."

"We therefore request temporary custody..."

"...be awarded to Margaret Carter."

I looked directly at my mother.

She finally met my eyes.

There was no anger.

No guilt.

Only satisfaction.

She truly believed she would take Noah from us.

My attorney rose.

"Your Honor..."

"The petition fails to mention that Mrs. Margaret Carter is herself under active investigation."

Reeves interrupted.

"No charges have been filed."

"Not yet," my attorney answered.

Detective Bennett stood from the gallery.

"Permission to address the court?"

The judge recognized her.

"Proceed."

Bennett walked to the witness stand carrying several evidence folders.

She placed them on the table.

"We have security footage showing Mrs. Carter withholding prescribed medication from Emily Carter."

Another folder.

"We have video evidence of physical assault."

Another.

"We have evidence of attempted document fraud."

Another.

"We have toxicology reports indicating prolonged poisoning."

The courtroom grew silent.

Margaret didn't react.

Not even slightly.

Reeves remained calm.

"Has my client been convicted?"

"No."

"Has she been charged?"

"Not yet."

He turned toward the judge.

"Then these are merely allegations."

The judge nodded thoughtfully.

Bennett expected this.

She reached into her briefcase one final time.

"I have one more piece of evidence."

She held up a small flash drive.

"The nursery camera."

The courtroom lights dimmed.

The recording began.

Emily rocking Noah gently.

Margaret entering.

The insults.

The screaming.

The slap.

The stolen medication.

The crying baby.

Every second echoed through the silent courtroom.

Several people looked away.

One elderly woman quietly wiped tears from her eyes.

Then came the recording of Emily collapsing.

Ryan entering.

The legal papers.

The bottle.

Margaret saying,

"She will be once I give her the rest."

The video ended.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Even Jonathan Reeves struggled to find words.

Then something unexpected happened.

Margaret laughed.

Not loudly.

Just enough for everyone to hear.

The judge frowned.

"Mrs. Carter?"

She slowly stood.

"May I speak?"

Her attorney looked alarmed.

"Margaret—"

She ignored him.

She looked directly at the judge.

"You've all misunderstood."

The courtroom held its breath.

"I wasn't trying to hurt Emily."

She smiled.

"I was preparing her."

The judge stared at her.

"For what?"

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"For the responsibilities of motherhood."

Gasps echoed through the gallery.

She continued calmly.

"Women today are weak."

"They complain."

"They cry."

"They expect sympathy."

"I simply taught her discipline."

The judge's expression hardened.

"You call withholding medication discipline?"

"I call it character."

"You call starving an infant character?"

"He missed one feeding."

Detective Bennett stepped forward.

"It was forty-seven minutes."

Margaret shrugged.

"He survived."

For the first time...

The mask slipped.

Not much.

Just enough.

There was no remorse in her voice.

Only certainty.

She truly believed she had done nothing wrong.

The judge removed his glasses.

Looked directly at Margaret.

Then toward the clerk.

"Based on the evidence presented..."

"This court immediately denies the petition for temporary custody."

Relief flooded through me.

But the judge wasn't finished.

"I further order that Margaret Carter have no contact..."

"...direct or indirect..."

"...with Noah Carter or Emily Carter."

He picked up his pen.

"And I am issuing an emergency protective order effective immediately."

Margaret's smile disappeared.

For the first time...

She looked surprised.

As officers approached to serve the order, Ryan suddenly stood.

"Your Honor!"

The judge frowned.

"Yes?"

Ryan looked toward me.

Then toward the courtroom doors.

His face had turned pale.

"There..."

He whispered.

"There's something you should all know."

My mother grabbed his arm.

"Sit down."

Ryan pulled away.

His voice trembled.

"I can't do this anymore."

The courtroom fell silent.

He looked directly at me.

"Daniel..."

"I'm sorry."

Then he pointed at our mother.

"The night Dad died..."

"He wasn't supposed to die."

Every person in the courtroom froze.

Ryan swallowed hard.

May you like

"He was only supposed..."

"...to lose the company."
