Chapter 4 - The Secret Maya Was Forced To Hide

I stared at the document until the words stopped making sense.
Maya’s name.
My wife’s signature.
A legal agreement I had never seen.
A transfer I had never approved.
My first instinct was anger.
Not toward Maya.
Never toward her.
But toward the person who forced her into this position.
Still…
A question remained.
Why didn’t she tell me?
Why did she carry this alone?
Why did she let me believe something was wrong between us?
I needed answers.
The next morning, I placed the document on the kitchen table.
Maya saw it.
And immediately started crying.
“I knew this would happen.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“You would think I betrayed you.”
My chest tightened.
“Maya.”
“I know what it looks like.”
She sat down.
“I know.”
I walked closer.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“I know you didn’t choose this.”
Her tears fell.
“Then why?”
“Why what?”
“Why did you keep thinking I didn’t love you?”
That question hurt.
Because she was right.
For one night…
I had doubted her.
And she had been suffering the entire time.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked surprised.
“I should have trusted you.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“You were gone.”
“You were fighting.”
“I was supposed to protect our home.”
A pause.
“And I failed.”
I knelt beside her.
“No.”
I held her hands.
“They failed you.”
Maya finally told me everything.
The full story.
The part she had been afraid to say.
Victoria had not only forced documents in front of her.
She had controlled her entire life.
She monitored her calls.
Her emails.
Her movements.
Julian had become the person delivering threats.
But Victoria was the one planning everything.
“She said you were always going to choose the company over me.”
Maya whispered.
“She said soldiers come home different.”
I looked away.
Because that was exactly the doubt she wanted planted.
“She told me you would blame me.”
“She told me nobody would believe me.”
My fists tightened.
“She was wrong.”
Then Maya said something that changed everything.
“There was one person who tried to help me.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
“Preston Hale.”
The attorney.
The same name I found in the phone.
“What did he do?”
“He contacted me secretly.”
“Why?”
“He said the documents were suspicious.”
I frowned.
“Then why is he involved?”
Maya looked confused.
“He isn’t.”
“What?”
“He was trying to stop them.”
I stared.
Another possibility appeared.
Someone had manipulated the evidence.
Someone wanted me to believe everyone was against me.
That afternoon, I called Preston Hale.
He answered immediately.
“Daniel.”
His voice sounded tense.
“You know who I am?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because I have been waiting for you to call.”
That bothered me.
“Explain.”
A pause.
“Your wife is not the only victim.”
My expression changed.
“What?”
“Daniel, your family has been planning this for years.”
“Years?”
“Yes.”
“What exactly are they trying to take?”
Silence.
Then:
“Everything your grandfather built.”
Preston sent me a file.
Inside were years of financial records.
Hidden companies.
Secret transfers.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Victoria Cole.
My mother.
But beneath her name…
Was another.
A name I didn’t recognize.
V.C. Holdings.
I searched the company.
And froze.
The owner wasn’t Victoria.
It wasn’t Julian.
It wasn’t even a person.
It was a trust.
A private trust created fifteen years earlier.
The beneficiary?
My brother Julian.
My mother wasn’t helping Julian.
She was building him an empire.
Using mine.
That night, I confronted Victoria.
She was sitting in the living room drinking wine.
Like nothing had happened.
Like she hadn’t destroyed my wife’s life.
“You’re awake late.”
I stood across from her.
“Why did you do it?”
She looked at me.
Not confused.
Not scared.
She knew.
“Do what?”
I placed the documents on the table.
Her expression finally changed.
Only slightly.
“You shouldn’t have gone looking.”
My blood ran cold.
“You admit it?”
She smiled.
“Daniel.”
She stood.
“You were always too emotional.”
I stared.
“My wife was abused.”
“She was pressured.”
“She was controlled.”
Victoria sighed.
“Such dramatic words.”
I felt something break inside me.
Not my anger.
My patience.
“Did you hurt her?”
Victoria looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“We did what was necessary.”
The room became silent.
“We?”
Before she answered…
Julian appeared in the doorway.
And said:
“You should ask yourself one question, brother.”
I turned.
“What?”
He smiled.
“Why do you think Dad left everything to you?”
I froze.
Because that question had haunted me my entire life.
Julian stepped closer.
“Because he knew something about you.”
“What?”
Julian lowered his voice.
“He knew you weren’t really his first choice.”
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?”
Julian smiled.
Then Victoria spoke.
“Your father left a secret letter.”
I stared.
“Where?”
She picked up her wine glass.
“Hidden somewhere you’ll never find.”
A pause.
“Unless you know where to look.”
I looked at both of them.
And finally understood.
This was never just about stealing my company.
They were hiding something about my own family.
May you like
Something my father never told me.
Something that could change everything.
