Chapter 12 - The Brother Who Wanted My Life

I didn’t sleep.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was thinking.
Anger was easy.
Anyone could be angry.
But understanding the enemy?
That required patience.
And for the first time…
I stopped seeing Julian as the reckless younger brother who made mistakes.
I saw him clearly.
A man who had spent his entire life believing he was owed something.
I called him.
“Meet me.”
A pause.
“Where?”
“Your choice.”
He laughed quietly.
“You finally want to talk?”
“No.”
I answered.
“I want the truth.”
We met at an old restaurant downtown.
The same place our father used to take us when we were children.
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
Julian arrived fifteen minutes late.
Of course.
He sat down.
“You look different.”
I looked at him.
“So do you.”
He smiled.
“Because I finally became important?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Because I finally see you.”
His smile disappeared.
“Did you know?”
I asked.
“About what?”
“Victoria.”
Silence.
“My real mother.”
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But enough.
“You know.”
“Yes.”
He looked away.
“Then you know why.”
“No.”
I leaned forward.
“I know you lied.”
“I know you helped hurt Maya.”
“I know you tried to steal my company.”
“But I don’t know why.”
Julian stared at the table.
Then he said:
“Because I spent my entire life watching you get everything.”
I almost laughed.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“The company.”
“Dad’s respect.”
“The family name.”
I looked at him.
“You had a family.”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“You had a family.”
That sentence revealed everything.
Julian wasn’t angry about money.
He was angry about feeling invisible.
“Mother told me the truth when I was eighteen.”
I froze.
“What truth?”
“That you weren’t her real son.”
I stared.
“She told you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she needed me.”
He looked at me.
“She told me I was the only real Cole.”
My stomach tightened.
“She built that hatred inside you.”
Julian nodded.
“Yes.”
For once…
He admitted it.
“She told me Dad was weak.”
“She told me you stole my place.”
“She told me everything would belong to me if I was patient.”
I looked at him.
“And you believed her.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
A long silence.
Then:
“I hated you.”
The honesty hurt.
“But why?”
“Because everyone loved you.”
I shook my head.
“That’s not true.”
“It was true to me.”
For the first time…
I saw the child Julian had been.
Not the man who betrayed me.
The boy who felt forgotten.
But understanding him didn’t erase what he did.
Pain explains actions.
It doesn’t excuse them.
“Did you hurt Maya?”
His face changed.
“No.”
“Julian.”
“I didn’t touch her.”
I believed him.
But that didn’t make him innocent.
“You watched.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt more.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
He closed his eyes.
“I was afraid of Mother.”
I stared.
“The same woman who manipulated you.”
“Yes.”
Then Julian said something unexpected.
“She has another plan.”
My expression changed.
“What?”
“She isn’t trying to take the company anymore.”
“Then what?”
He looked at me.
“She wants to destroy it.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Because if she can’t own it…”
His voice lowered.
“She wants nobody to have it.”
I stood.
“Where is she?”
Julian hesitated.
“Daniel.”
“Where?”
“She has another account.”
“What account?”
“A hidden one.”
He looked nervous.
“One connected to your father.”
My heartbeat increased.
“What does that mean?”
Julian whispered:
“She has something your father left behind.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
I stared.
“What recording?”
“The one that proves why he chose you.”
That night, Preston found the account.
And what we discovered changed everything.
Victoria wasn’t trying to steal Cole-Bennett Logistics.
She was trying to access the final inheritance.
The one my father never revealed.
A private trust.
Created before I was born.
The beneficiary?
Not me.
Not Julian.
Not Victoria.
A name that made the entire room silent.
Maya Cole.
Maya stared at the document.
“I don’t understand.”
Neither did I.
Because suddenly the question was no longer:
Who owns the company?
The question was:
Why did my father trust Maya with everything?
And what did he know about her family that nobody had told us?
Then another document appeared.
A letter.
From my father.
Addressed to Maya.
The first sentence made my heart stop.
Maya, if Daniel is reading this, then Victoria has finally shown him who she really is.
I looked at my wife.
She looked terrified.
Because she understood something I didn’t.
My father wasn’t just protecting the company.
He was protecting Maya.

And whatever secret connected them…
Was the reason Victoria was willing to destroy everyone.
