Chapter 10 - The Meeting That Destroyed The Mercer Plan

The room was filled with investors.
Executives.
Lawyers.
People who had spent years believing the Cole family was untouchable.
Victoria stood at the front.
Calm.
Confident.
She believed the story belonged to her.
Until Maya walked in.
“Mrs. Cole.”
Victoria smiled.
“Maya.”
Her voice was fake kindness.
“I’m glad you’re here.”
Maya didn’t answer.
She walked to the table.
Sat beside me.
And placed a folder down.
The room immediately changed.
Because everyone expected Maya to be nervous.
Silent.
Broken.
Instead…
She looked prepared.
Victoria began.
“We are here because Daniel’s recent behavior has created concerns about company stability.”
She looked at me.
“After his deployment, his decisions have become unpredictable.”
I watched her carefully.
She never raised her voice.
She never attacked directly.
She made everything sound reasonable.
That was dangerous.
Then Maya spoke.
“Before we discuss Daniel’s decisions…”
The room became quiet.
“We need to discuss the documents used to remove him.”
Victoria’s expression tightened.
“What documents?”
Maya opened the folder.
“These.”
Copies appeared on the screen.
Transfer agreements.
Ownership changes.
Financial movements.
The room murmured.
Victoria remained calm.
“You don’t understand these documents.”
Maya looked at her.
“I understand them better than you think.”
The company attorney reviewed the papers.
Then stopped.
“There is a problem.”
Everyone looked at him.
“These transfers were approved using authorization that appears invalid.”
Victoria frowned.
“What?”
The attorney continued.
“The controlling signature does not match the original ownership requirements.”
I looked at Victoria.
She knew.
She knew exactly what he was saying.
Julian stood.
“This is ridiculous.”
Maya looked at him.
“Is it?”
She placed another document on the table.
“Your company registration.”
Julian froze.
“What about it?”
“The funding source.”
Silence.
“The money used to create JVC Capital.”
She looked at him.
“Came from Victoria Cole.”
The room exploded with whispers.
Julian looked at his mother.
For the first time…
He looked confused.
Because he realized something.
He wasn’t the owner.
He was the front.
Victoria finally lost control.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Maya remained calm.
“No.”
Her voice was steady.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
That was the moment everything changed.
Because everyone in that room saw it.
Maya was no longer the woman they threatened.
She was the woman who could stop them.
Then Victoria made her biggest mistake.
She looked at Maya and said:
“You should remember who saved you.”
The room became silent.
Maya’s expression changed.
“What?”
Victoria smiled.
“You think Daniel knows everything?”
I looked at my mother.
“What are you talking about?”
Victoria leaned forward.
“Maya wasn’t the only person who benefited from this arrangement.”
My stomach tightened.
“Maya?”
My wife looked confused.
Victoria continued.
“Tell him.”
Silence.
“Maya.”
I looked at my wife.
“What is she talking about?”
Maya’s face turned pale.
Because there was something.
Something she hadn’t told me.
After the meeting was suspended, I followed Maya outside.
“Maya.”
She stopped.
Tears were already in her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
She looked away.
“The reason your father trusted me…”
I waited.
“It wasn’t only because he believed I was loyal.”
My heart tightened.
“Then why?”
She whispered:
“Because your father knew something about my family.”
I froze.
“Your family?”
She nodded.
“My grandfather was involved with Cole-Bennett Logistics before you were born.”
I stared.
“What?”
“He helped build the first foundation.”
The pieces moved.
Slowly.
Dangerously.
That night, Maya showed me another document.
An old family agreement.
The name at the bottom made my heart stop.
James Cole.
My father.
And beside it…
Another name.
A name I recognized.
A name I never expected.
Victoria Cole.
But the date was impossible.
Because the agreement was signed…
Before my parents were married.
Before I was born.
Before Julian existed.
I looked at Maya.
“What is this?”
Her voice shook.
“Daniel…”
A pause.
“Your father didn’t just choose me to protect the company.”
I waited.
“He chose me because he knew the truth about your family.”
“What truth?”
Maya looked at the document.
Then at me.
“The Cole family was never built the way you were told.”
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?”
She whispered:
“Victoria isn’t the woman who married into your family.”
“She was already connected to it.”
I stared.
The world suddenly felt different.
Because the enemy inside my home…
Was not someone who entered my family.
She had been there from the beginning.
My phone rang.
Preston.
I answered.
“Daniel.”
His voice was urgent.
“We found the original birth records.”
I froze.
“What birth records?”
A pause.
“The ones connected to Victoria.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
His answer was quiet.
“Because Daniel…”
“Victoria Cole may not actually be your mother.”
The call ended.
And for the first time since I came home…
I wasn’t fighting to save my company.
May you like
I wasn’t fighting to save my marriage.
I was fighting to discover who I really was.
