Chapter 9 - THE DEAD MAN’S ACCOUNT

Jonathan Mercer had been declared legally dead thirty-four years earlier.
His family bank no longer existed, but several archived corporate records remained inside a federal financial database.
Sarah Chen, the Whitmore board member who had warned Ryan about the trust, helped him review them.
Jonathan had controlled a private investment company called North River Holdings.
The name matched one Daniel mentioned in his recording.
North River Medical Holdings had received millions from the Whitmore Children’s Foundation.
“You think your mother has been moving money through a dead man’s company?” Maya asked.
“Not just a dead man’s company.”
Ryan pointed to a registration number.
“The corporation was reactivated twelve years after Jonathan disappeared.”
“By whom?”
“A legal representative.”
Graham Vale.
The arrangement was elegant.
Money intended for pediatric clinics was paid to consulting companies.
Those companies transferred the funds to North River.
North River purchased property, art and private investments hidden from the Whitmore board.
Daniel discovered the scheme.
Then he died.
Evelyn and Graham continued operating it.
Maya studied the transactions.
“Why risk everything for money? Evelyn already had more than she could spend.”
“For her, money is proof that no one can tell her no.”
Ryan found one recent payment that stood apart from the others.
Two million dollars transferred from North River to a company called Mercer Recovery Services.
The company had no website, employees or physical office.
It had been created six months earlier.
The registered agent was Michael Grant.
Detective Brooks traced the funds into cash withdrawals and cryptocurrency.
The money financed surveillance equipment, forged documents and the hospital abduction attempt.
“It’s the operation against us,” Ryan said.
“Partly,” Lena replied. “But two million is excessive for what we’ve seen.”
“What else did they pay for?”
“We’re looking.”
The investigation finally produced an arrest warrant for Graham.
Charges included conspiracy, witness intimidation, evidence tampering and attempted custodial interference.
Federal agents also opened a financial crimes case.
Graham remained missing.
Michael Grant disappeared with him.
Evelyn continued claiming innocence.
Her attorney argued that Graham had manipulated her.
According to the new version of events, Evelyn had believed Oliver was in danger and relied on fraudulent evidence prepared by a trusted adviser.
The video made that defense difficult.
However, Evelyn’s team began negotiating.
She offered information about Graham in exchange for reduced charges.
The district attorney refused unless she disclosed Teresa’s kidnapping and the location of the missing financial records.
Evelyn claimed she knew nothing.
Ryan knew she was lying.
She always knew more than she admitted.
Three days later, Ryan received a letter at the apartment.
There was no return address.
Inside was an invitation to meet Evelyn at the Whitmore family chapel.
The chapel stood on private land beside Daniel’s grave.
The protective order prevented Evelyn from contacting Ryan.
The invitation itself violated her bail conditions.
At the bottom she had written:
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY DANIEL CHOSE YOU.
Ryan showed the letter to Maya and Detective Brooks.
“It’s a trap,” Maya said.
“Probably.”
“You’re not going.”
“I need to hear what she knows.”
“You heard her in court.”
“She knows where the original will is.”
“You don’t know that.”
“She knows something.”
Lena agreed to organize surveillance around the chapel.
Ryan would wear a recording device.
If Evelyn appeared, officers could arrest her for violating the order.
At sunset, Ryan entered the chapel alone.
Candles burned near the altar.
Daniel’s portrait hung beside a stained-glass window.
Evelyn sat in the first pew wearing black.
She looked smaller than she had in court.
Ryan knew better than to confuse fragility with surrender.
“You came,” she said.
“Where is the original trust?”
“No hello?”
“Where is it?”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“You sound like Daniel.”
“Did you kill him?”
Her expression did not change.
“You have been speaking to Nora.”
“Answer me.”
“Your father was dying.”
“From what?”
“From disappointment.”
Ryan stepped into the aisle.
“You drugged him.”
“I managed his medication.”
“You used the same sedative on Oliver.”
“That was Graham’s idea.”
“But you did it.”
Evelyn looked toward Daniel’s portrait.
“I needed Maya to sign.”
“So you took away a child’s ability to breathe.”
“The dose was not supposed to endanger him.”
“You hid his inhaler.”
“To create urgency.”
Ryan felt rage rise.
He forced himself to remain still.
“You almost killed him.”
“I underestimated the severity of his condition.”
“You underestimated nothing. You simply believed your plan mattered more.”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“You think Daniel was better? He built a company by destroying competitors and then pretended charity made him moral.”
“He did not attack children.”
“No. He used them.”
“What does that mean?”
“He left control of everything to you because he wanted to punish me.”
“Why would leaving the company to his son punish you?”
“Because you were never his son.”
Ryan absorbed the words without reacting.
“Yet he chose me.”
The statement struck her.
For the first time, genuine pain appeared on Evelyn’s face.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel believed choosing you made him noble.”
“Or because he loved me.”
“He loved the version of himself he saw when he looked at you.”
“That is still more love than you ever gave me.”
Evelyn stood.
Her voice became cold.
“I protected you from the truth.”
“You protected yourself.”
“Jonathan Mercer did not die in that boat.”
Ryan’s heart stopped.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“He survived the explosion.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“I saw him once, five years after the accident. He demanded money. Graham arranged the payment.”
“Why didn’t he come for me?”
“Because he never wanted a child.”
She reached into her coat.
Officers outside tensed through Ryan’s earpiece.
Evelyn removed a small brass key.
“The Mercer file is in Daniel’s private vault beneath the old company building.”
She held it out.
Ryan did not take it.
“What is inside?”
“Proof that your biological father was alive after his supposed death.”
“And the original trust?”
“Possibly.”
“You don’t know?”
“Daniel moved it before he died.”
Ryan took the key.
Evelyn leaned close.
“Graham is looking for the same vault.”
A sound came from the rear of the chapel.
Glass shattered.
The candles went out.
Gunfire cracked through the darkness.
Ryan dropped behind a pew.
Officers rushed through the doors.
When the emergency lights flickered on, Evelyn was lying near the altar.
May you like
Blood spread across her black coat.
The brass key remained inside Ryan’s hand.
