Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO DISAPPEARED

Federal investigators traced Jonathan Mercer through a network of false identities.

For decades, he had moved between Canada, Argentina, Portugal and the United States.

Each identity lasted only a few years.

Each one was financed by North River accounts.

The most recent payment had been sent to a rehabilitation facility in northern Michigan.

Ryan traveled there with Detective Brooks and two federal agents.

Maya remained in Chicago with Oliver and Marcus Reed.

The facility sat beside a frozen lake surrounded by pine trees.

Its director led them to a private room in the east wing.

The patient registered under the name Thomas March had arrived eight months earlier after suffering a stroke.

He was seventy-one years old.

When Ryan entered the room, the man was staring through the window.

His left arm rested motionless on a blanket.

Silver hair framed a thin face marked by age and illness.

Ryan saw nothing familiar.

Then the man turned.

His eyes were the same gray-green shade Ryan saw every morning in the mirror.

“Jonathan Mercer?” Lena asked.

The man’s gaze moved to Ryan.

His mouth trembled.

“Evelyn sent you.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“I’m Ryan Whitmore.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“So Daniel told you.”

“Daniel is dead.”

“I know.”

“You are my biological father.”

Jonathan looked toward the agents.

“I want an attorney.”

Ryan’s anger sharpened.

“For thirty-five years, you allowed the world to think you were dead.”

“I had reasons.”

“You had a son.”

“I had an arrangement.”

“With Evelyn and Graham?”

Jonathan’s silence was confirmation.

The agents advised Ryan to step outside while they questioned him formally.

Ryan refused until Jonathan looked at him again.

“Did you ever want to meet me?”

Jonathan’s face showed no emotion.

“Wanting things was never my problem.”

The answer hurt less than Ryan expected.

Daniel’s letter had already told him who his father was.

Jonathan was only the man whose DNA he carried.

During the interview, Jonathan admitted the boating explosion had been staged.

He and Graham used it to escape an investigation into bank fraud.

Evelyn knew about the plan but believed Jonathan would eventually return for her.

He did not.

Years later, after marrying Daniel, she contacted Jonathan and helped reactivate North River Holdings.

The three began moving money through shell companies.

“What did Daniel discover?” Lena asked.

“Enough.”

“Did Evelyn kill him?”

Jonathan stared at his useless hand.

“Evelyn administered the drugs.”

“Did Graham instruct her?”

“Yes.”

“Did you participate?”

“I was in Buenos Aires.”

“But you knew?”

“I knew Daniel had become a problem.”

The agents arrested Jonathan for financial crimes, fraud and conspiracy.

His medical condition did not shield him from prosecution.

Before they removed him, he asked to speak with Ryan alone.

The agents remained within view.

Jonathan leaned closer.

“Graham will not run forever.”

“Where is he?”

“He wants the company.”

“He cannot have it.”

“He doesn’t need legal ownership. He needs the board to collapse the share price.”

“Why?”

“North River holds short positions through offshore funds. If Whitmore Industries falls, Graham makes hundreds of millions.”

Ryan understood.

The attack on Maya.

The public scandal.

The trust dispute.

His suspension.

Everything destabilized the company.

Graham could destroy the Whitmore family and profit from the ruins.

“He will create one more crisis,” Jonathan said.

“What kind?”

“One the board cannot survive.”

“Tell me.”

Jonathan looked toward the door.

“The foundation hospitals.”

“What about them?”

“North River supplied equipment through fraudulent vendors. Some of it was defective.”

Ryan remembered Evelyn’s public reputation.

Children’s hospitals.

Respiratory clinics.

Medical programs funded in the Whitmore name.

“How defective?”

“Ventilators. Oxygen valves. Pediatric monitoring systems.”

Ryan felt sick.

“Are children using them now?”

Jonathan looked away.

“Some.”

Ryan called Sarah Chen before leaving the facility.

“Shut down every piece of equipment purchased through North River vendors.”

“That could affect fourteen hospitals.”

“Do it.”

“We need evidence.”

“My biological father just confessed.”

Silence followed.

Sarah recovered quickly.

“I’ll call an emergency board session.”

“Do not use the internal system. Graham may be monitoring it.”

Ryan contacted federal health authorities and the hospitals directly.

A nationwide recall began that evening.

At St. Catherine’s Hospital, technicians inspected a pediatric oxygen regulator installed through a North River supplier.

The serial number matched a falsified safety certificate.

It was the same model used in Oliver’s treatment after the nursery attack.

Maya stood beside her son’s bed when she received the news.

The equipment had not failed.

But it could have.

Even after Evelyn’s plan placed Oliver in the hospital, Graham’s corruption had been waiting beside him.

Maya called Ryan.

“Come home.”

“I’m leaving now.”

“No. Come home immediately.”

Her voice was shaking.

“What happened?”

“Marcus found something in Oliver’s stuffed elephant.”

Ryan stopped walking.

“What?”

“A tracking device.”

The elephant had been a gift from Evelyn.

Oliver had carried it from the mansion.

To the apartment.

To the hospital.

To every supposedly secret location.

Before Ryan could answer, alarms sounded through Maya’s phone.

May you like

Marcus shouted in the background.

The line went dead.
