Chapter 14 - THE THIRD PERSON IN THE NURSERY

Evelyn met Ryan inside a secure room at the county detention center.

There was no glass between them.

A camera recorded every word.

Her shoulder remained in a sling from the chapel shooting.

For the first time in Ryan’s life, she wore clothing she had not selected herself.

The plain jail uniform made her appear ordinary.

Ryan knew that appearance was another lie.

“You asked to see me.”

Evelyn looked at his wedding ring.

“Maya stayed.”

“She survived you.”

“I never wanted her dead.”

“You only wanted her imprisoned, publicly destroyed and separated from her child.”

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

“You sound rehearsed.”

“I’ve had time to understand you.”

“No one understands anyone completely.”

“Then explain the third person.”

Evelyn looked toward the camera.

“I want the agreement signed first.”

“No.”

“My testimony gives the prosecution Graham’s entire network.”

“They already have his drive.”

“Not the offshore witnesses.”

“Then tell the prosecutor.”

“I want your assurance that you will not oppose the plea.”

Ryan leaned back.

“You no longer have anything I need.”

“I have the name of the person who gave Graham access to Oliver’s medical records.”

Ryan remained silent.

Evelyn continued.

“The person who told us Maya had refused the guardianship papers before the nursery incident.”

“Who?”

“Your sister.”

Ryan stared at her.

“I don’t have a sister.”

“Yes, you do.”

Evelyn spoke the name slowly.

“Claire Mercer.”

Jonathan Mercer had another child.

Claire was born eight years after the boating explosion under one of his false identities.

She grew up in Canada and became a medical data consultant.

Three years earlier, Graham hired her through North River.

Claire discovered Jonathan was her father and learned Ryan existed.

“She believed you received the life she should have had,” Evelyn said.

“I did not know she existed.”

“She knew you did.”

“Was she the woman at the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“The fake nurse?”

“Yes.”

“She tried to take Oliver.”

“She believed she was protecting her inheritance.”

Ryan stood.

“There is no inheritance.”

“People do terrible things for imaginary ownership.”

“You would know.”

Evelyn ignored the insult.

“Claire accessed Oliver’s files, Maya’s therapy history and the genetic test. She created the forged custody order.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

“Graham does.”

“Graham will not protect her now.”

Ryan leaned forward.

“Did Claire know you planned to drug Oliver?”

“She knew we needed a medical event.”

“That is not an answer.”

“Yes.”

The word landed like another act of violence.

A woman Ryan had never met had helped use his child because she resented a life he had never chosen.

“Why tell me now?”

“Because Claire has copies of everything.”

“Everything?”

“The financial records. The medical equipment files. Daniel’s recordings. She created an encrypted archive in case Graham betrayed her.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Jonathan may.”

“He’s in federal custody.”

“Then speak to him.”

Ryan rose to leave.

Evelyn called his name.

He stopped at the door.

“Did Daniel’s letter say anything about me?”

Ryan looked back.

For once, she appeared uncertain.

Human.

He could have lied.

He could have told her Daniel hated her.

Instead, he answered honestly.

“He told me to choose my family instead of the empire.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with something close to grief.

“And you think he meant Maya.”

“He meant the people who know love is not ownership.”

Ryan left her alone.

Federal investigators questioned Jonathan about Claire.

He denied knowing her location.

Then they showed him evidence that Claire had attempted to kidnap Oliver.

His resistance weakened.

Claire believed Jonathan had hidden a fortune for her.

In reality, most of the North River money belonged to Evelyn and Graham.

Jonathan had promised Claire access to the accounts if she helped him recover control.

“Where would she go?” Lena asked.

Jonathan stared at the table.

“She has a house near Saugatuck.”

Agents arrived four hours later.

The house was empty.

Computers had been removed.

A fireplace contained burned papers.

In the basement, investigators found photographs of Ryan, Maya and Oliver covering an entire wall.

Claire had tracked them for years.

One photograph showed Maya leaving her obstetrician while pregnant.

Another showed Ryan holding newborn Oliver outside the hospital.

A third showed Evelyn entering the genetic-testing clinic.

Claire had not recently discovered Ryan.

She had been watching before Oliver was born.

On a desk lay an unsealed envelope addressed to Ryan.

Inside was a handwritten note.

You were given my father, my name and my future.

I only took what belonged to me.

Beneath the note was a photograph of Claire.

Ryan recognized her immediately.

She was the woman who had been standing behind Evelyn at the Whitmore Foundation gala six months earlier.

Evelyn had introduced her as a medical technology adviser.

Claire had shaken Ryan’s hand.

She had complimented Maya’s dress.

Then she had knelt in front of Oliver and given him a stuffed elephant.

The same elephant that later contained the tracking device.
