Chapter 8 - The Forged Life

Camila was taken to the county hospital under police guard.

She told Detective Morgan that two men had followed her from Union Station.

They forced her car off the road and searched it.

When they did not find Vanessa’s phone, one of them warned her to stop speaking.

Camila escaped through a drainage field after another vehicle approached.

She could not identify the men.

But she recognized the voice of the person who called them during the attack.

Celeste Whitmore.

Celeste denied everything.

Her attorney described Camila as a dishonest employee trying to avoid criminal charges.

By morning, the Whitmore family had transformed the story again.

Camila had stolen a phone.

Ethan had pressured her to fabricate evidence.

Lily was being used as a weapon in a financial dispute.

Daniel watched the television statement in the Bennett living room.

“They are building an alternative reality,” he said.

Ethan stood near the window.

“Can they make people believe it?”

“Some people will believe anything repeated often enough.”

“What about court?”

“Evidence matters more there.”

“Usually?”

Daniel did not answer.

The forensic report arrived that afternoon.

The handwriting on Lily’s note was highly likely to be Vanessa’s.

The confession planted in Lily’s desk had been written using deliberate tremors to imitate a child.

Vanessa’s fingerprints were found on both papers.

Camila’s prints were found on the jewelry box.

Digital analysis confirmed that Vanessa’s phone contained the original trust files and Hawthorne drafts.

Ethan’s forged emails had been created from an internet address registered to Whitmore Strategic Holdings.

Dr. Simon Vale’s evaluation contained copied sections from three unrelated psychological reports.

He had never been licensed to treat children.

Detective Morgan called it one of the most methodical domestic fraud cases she had seen.

But one question remained.

Why had Vanessa risked so much for control of Lily’s trust?

The shares were valuable.

Yet Vanessa’s family was already wealthy.

Daniel searched public financial records.

The answer appeared in a document filed six months earlier.

Whitmore Strategic Holdings had guaranteed a failed commercial development in Miami.

When the project collapsed, the firm inherited nearly two hundred million dollars in debt.

Celeste had hidden the losses through subsidiary companies.

A successful acquisition of Cole Restoration would have saved them.

“They were desperate,” Daniel said.

“They needed Lily’s voting shares.”

Ethan read the debt report.

“Vanessa’s marriage to me was a corporate rescue.”

“Partly.”

“What do you mean, partly?”

Daniel closed the folder.

“People rarely operate from one motive.”

“You think she loved me?”

“I think she wanted your life.”

“That is not the same.”

“No.”

Ethan sat beside Lily at the dining table.

She was painting a wooden birdhouse with Rose.

For the first time since the wedding, she looked peaceful.

He wondered how many times he had mistaken quiet fear for peace.

Daniel received another call.

He stepped into the hallway.

When he returned, his expression was tense.

“The locker has been opened.”

“What was inside?”

“A prepaid phone, clothing in Lily’s size, and a passport.”

Ethan stood.

“A passport?”

“With Lily’s photograph.”

“Whose name?”

“Lucy Bennett.”

Rose dropped her paintbrush.

“My maiden name.”

Daniel continued.

“There was also a ticket to Montreal.”

“They planned to make it look as though she ran away,” Ethan said.

“That appears likely.”

Lily was listening now.

“Was I going to Canada?”

“No,” Ethan said quickly.

“Vanessa said Canada was cold.”

Rose pulled Lily close.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The passport was professionally made.”

“Who accessed the locker?”

“A man wearing a cap.”

“Did police catch him?”

“No.”

“Can they identify him?”

“They are trying.”

Thomas entered from the porch.

“There’s a car by the north fence.”

Ethan moved toward the window.

A dark sedan sat beyond the field.

When the police cruiser started toward it, the sedan pulled away.

Lily left the table and took Ethan’s hand.

“Are they watching us?”

He wanted to lie.

Mara’s letter stopped him.

“Maybe.”

“Why?”

“Because some people are afraid of the truth.”

“Are you afraid?”

“Yes.”

Her fingers tightened around his.

“Me too.”

Ethan knelt.

“Being afraid does not mean we are powerless.”

“What do we do?”

“We stay together.”

“Like at the wedding?”

“Exactly like at the wedding.”

That evening, Ethan received a message from an unknown number.

A photograph was attached.

It showed him kneeling beside Lily in the mirrored hallway.

The picture had been taken before they entered the ballroom.

Before he canceled the wedding.

Before any guest knew something was wrong.

Beneath the photograph was a sentence.

You should have taken the deal.

Ethan showed it to Detective Morgan.

“Who was in the hallway?” she asked.

“No one I noticed.”

“Hotel employees?”

“Possibly.”

“Wedding staff?”

“Yes.”

“Camila?”

“She said she was near the bridal room.”

Detective Morgan enlarged the image.

The reflection in the mirror revealed part of the photographer.

A hand.

A black sleeve.

A distinctive silver ring shaped like a snake.

Ethan recognized it.

Julian Whitmore wore that ring.

Vanessa’s brother had been standing near the hallway when Ethan left the ballroom.

Daniel called him.

No answer.

Detective Morgan sent officers to his apartment.

It was empty.

His passport was gone.

The family jet had departed for Switzerland three hours earlier.

Celeste claimed Julian was traveling for business.

But customs records showed he had not boarded the plane.

His name was on the passenger list.

His seat had been empty.

At 2:00 a.m., Ethan’s phone rang again.

This time the caller did not hide the number.

Julian.

“Where are you?” Ethan asked.

“I need immunity.”

“For what?”

“For helping my mother.”

“What did you do?”

Julian breathed heavily.

“I took the hallway photograph.”

“Why?”

“Vanessa wanted proof that Lily gave you the note.”

“Why would she want that?”

“So she could claim Lily planned everything.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m not telling you until Daniel guarantees protection.”

“You helped terrorize my daughter.”

“I also know what happened to Mara.”

Ethan became completely still.

May you like

“What did you say?”

“Your wife’s accident was not an accident.”
