Chapter 15 - The Third Partner
Police searched the Bennett property immediately.
No camera was found inside Lily’s room.
The photograph had been taken through the window using a long-range lens.
Footprints led into the woods and disappeared near the service road.
The timing made one thing clear.
Someone had been watching the house while Celeste’s verdict was being announced.
Ethan moved Lily to a secure apartment arranged by federal investigators.
Only Rose, Thomas, Daniel, and Detective Morgan knew the location.
Vanessa was questioned.
She denied knowing who had sent the photograph.
Ethan believed her.
Her confession had exposed the Whitmore plan, but it had also revealed gaps.
Celeste and Vanessa had focused on controlling Lily’s shares.
Someone else had financed the surveillance operation.
Daniel traced payments through three shell companies.
The final company belonged to Adrian Cross, a private equity executive and former partner of Celeste Whitmore.
Cross had pursued Cole Restoration for years.
He had also attended Ethan’s wedding.
“Where was he when Lily gave me the note?” Ethan asked.
Daniel checked the guest photographs.
“Near the mirrored hallway.”
“Was he wearing black?”
“Yes.”
“A ring?”
Daniel enlarged an image.
A silver snake curled around Cross’s finger.
They had assumed the reflection belonged to Julian.
Julian owned a similar ring because Adrian Cross had given matching ones to several members of an investment circle.
“Cross took the hallway photograph,” Ethan said.
“Possibly.”
“Why?”
“To preserve leverage.”
“Against Vanessa?”
“Against everyone.”
Investigators searched Cross’s office.
He had left the country the morning after Celeste’s arrest.
His private jet landed in the Bahamas, then departed without filing a public destination.
Cross’s computers had been wiped.
But his former chief financial officer provided an archived agreement.
Celeste would destabilize Cole Restoration.
Vanessa would obtain influence through marriage.
Cross would finance the acquisition.
Once the company was controlled, its historic properties would be sold separately.
Hundreds of employees would lose their jobs.
Projects preserving libraries, schools, and theaters would be abandoned.
Lily’s inheritance was only one piece of a much larger plan.
Cross sent Ethan a message through an encrypted account.
Sell the company voluntarily.
Keep twenty percent.
Protect your daughter from further attention.
Daniel read it.
“He is offering you a deal.”
“He photographed Lily sleeping.”
“He wants you frightened.”
“It will not work.”
“You should still consider security.”
“I mean the sale.”
Daniel studied him.
“What about the company?”
“It belonged to Mara’s family.”
“It also employs twelve hundred people.”
“I am not selling it to a man who threatens children.”
Ethan arranged an emergency board meeting.
He revealed the entire conspiracy.
Some directors wanted to delay the hotel acquisition.
Others feared the company’s value would collapse under scandal.
Ethan understood their concerns.
But fear had already controlled too many decisions.
“We continue,” he said.
A director named Martin Hale objected.
“You are exposing everyone to unnecessary risk.”
“Cross created the risk.”
“And you made it personal.”
“He photographed my daughter.”
“This is a corporation, Ethan.”
“It was founded by my wife’s grandfather to preserve places people thought had no value.”
Hale leaned forward.
“Sentiment will not protect shareholders.”
“No.”
Ethan looked around the table.
“But surrendering to extortion will not protect them either.”
The board voted.
Seven supported Ethan.
Four opposed.
One abstained.
The acquisition would continue.
That night, Martin Hale disappeared.
Investigators found evidence that he had communicated with Adrian Cross for eighteen months.
Hale had provided internal company records.
He had also approved payments to the surveillance team watching Mara before her death.
Cross had been involved from the beginning.
Celeste ordered the intimidation.
Cross financed it.
Vanessa inherited the plan.
Three adults had treated Lily’s family as a business opportunity.
The federal government issued warrants for Cross and Hale.
Hale was arrested at the Canadian border.
Cross remained missing.
Lily learned only that another man had helped Vanessa.
Ethan did not tell her about the bedroom photograph.
He struggled with the decision.
The therapist working with Lily advised that children deserved truthful information presented at a level they could carry.
“She already believes danger hides behind every silence,” Dr. Patel said.
“So I should tell her someone watched her sleep?”
“You should tell her why the apartment has guards.”
Ethan sat with Lily that evening.
They were building a puzzle on the floor.
“There is another person involved,” he said.
“Vanessa’s friend?”
“Her mother’s business partner.”
“Does he want the company?”
“Yes.”
“Does he want to hurt me?”
“He wants us to be afraid.”
“Are we?”
“I am careful.”
“That means yes.”
Ethan smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“What did he do?”
“He watched the house.”
Lily stopped touching the puzzle pieces.
“Did he see me?”
“Yes.”
She wrapped her arms around herself.
“Why do adults keep watching me?”
“Because they think you are the easiest person to frighten.”
“Am I?”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I ran away.”
“Being frightened does not make you weak.”
“I believed Vanessa.”
“You also saved the recordings.”
Lily considered that.
“Can I help catch him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that is the police’s job.”
“What is my job?”
“To be eight.”
She rolled her eyes.
“That is not a job.”
“It includes school, drawing, eating vegetables, and correcting me.”
“I’m good at the last one.”
Ethan laughed.
The sound surprised both of them.
For a few minutes, they returned to the puzzle.
Then Lily asked, “Will the wedding lady go to prison?”
“Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“Probably.”
“Forever?”
“No.”
“Will she still be mean when she comes out?”
“I don’t know.”
“Can people change?”
“Sometimes.”
“How do you know?”
“Because change is something people do, not something they promise.”
Lily placed the final puzzle piece.
It completed a picture of a lighthouse.
The next morning, Adrian Cross was arrested in Lisbon.
He had used a false passport.
Inside his hotel room, investigators found contracts, bank records, and surveillance reports.
They also found a list of potential pressure points against Ethan.
At the bottom of the list was one final entry.
Mara’s medical records.
Ethan read the recovered file.
Cross had known about Mara’s heart condition before she died.
He had used the information to make the crash appear medically caused if the brake sabotage was discovered.
The plan had been more detailed than Celeste admitted.
