Chapter 6 - The Assistant

The recordings changed everything.

Daniel delivered copies to Detective Morgan, the court, and the forensic technology team examining Ethan’s accounts.

By noon, the emergency restraining order had been granted.

Vanessa and Celeste were prohibited from contacting Lily or approaching the Cole residence.

The judge also ordered both women to preserve all electronic devices and communications.

Judge Richard Whitmore, Vanessa’s uncle, was removed from any proceedings connected to the family.

Vanessa’s public statement disappeared from her social media accounts.

The damage remained.

Reporters gathered outside the Cole house.

Television vans blocked half the street.

Every time a camera flashed through the curtains, Lily flinched.

Ethan moved her to Mara’s parents’ home outside the city.

Rose and Thomas Bennett lived on six quiet acres surrounded by maple trees.

They welcomed Lily without questions.

Rose held her granddaughter for so long that both of them began to cry.

Ethan stayed only long enough to ensure she felt safe.

Then he returned to the city.

He had spent the previous day reacting.

Now he intended to understand.

Camila Reyes called at 4:17 that afternoon.

Ethan knew her as Vanessa’s quiet assistant.

Camila had organized the wedding schedule, managed the dress fittings, and carried two phones at all times.

She had always seemed nervous around Celeste.

“I need to speak with you,” Camila said.

“Where are you?”

“I cannot say over the phone.”

“Are you in danger?”

A long pause followed.

“I don’t know.”

They agreed to meet at a café near Union Station.

Daniel insisted on coming.

Camila sat in a rear booth wearing a baseball cap and oversized coat.

Her hands shook around a cup of tea.

When Ethan approached, she immediately began crying.

“I am sorry.”

“For what?”

“For helping her.”

Ethan sat across from her.

Daniel remained beside him.

“Tell us everything,” Daniel said.

Camila looked toward the windows.

“Vanessa hired me three years ago.”

“For public relations?”

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“She started asking me to handle personal matters.”

“What kind?”

“Background checks.”

“On whom?”

“Ethan.”

He did not react.

“What did she learn?”

“Your company’s value.”

“Anything else?”

“Your late wife’s trust.”

Ethan felt his jaw tighten.

“Did Vanessa meet me because of the company?”

“I don’t know.”

Camila began twisting a paper napkin between her fingers.

“She saw you at a museum fundraiser.”

“That’s where we met.”

“She asked me to find out whether you were dating anyone.”

“You investigated me before she introduced herself?”

“Yes.”

Daniel wrote something in his notebook.

“Was Celeste involved?”

Camila nodded.

“Mrs. Whitmore said Cole Restoration was a strategic asset.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“Did Vanessa ever love me?”

Camila looked at him with genuine pity.

“I think she wanted to.”

“That is not an answer.”

“She became obsessed with becoming your wife.”

“Because of me or because of the company?”

“I don’t know whether Vanessa understands the difference.”

The answer hurt more than a simple denial.

Camila opened her bag and removed a second phone.

“This is hers.”

Ethan stared at it.

“How did you get it?”

“She gave it to me during the reception preparations.”

“Why?”

“She wanted me to delete a folder.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I heard what she said to Lily.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“You were in the bridal room?”

“I was outside.”

“Why didn’t you stop her?”

Camila’s eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.”

“So was Lily.”

“I know.”

Ethan’s anger rose, but Daniel placed a hand on the table.

“Let her finish.”

Camila unlocked the phone.

The folder was labeled Family Planning.

Inside were drafts of the Hawthorne application.

Copies of Ethan’s signature.

Psychological reports.

Photographs of Lily crying.

Emails between Vanessa and Dr. Vale.

One message read:

The symptoms do not need to be observed directly.

Use the father’s reported concerns and frame them as clinical impressions.

Another file contained a proposed petition to appoint Vanessa as co-trustee of Lily’s inheritance.

The petition argued that Ethan was emotionally compromised by his daughter’s instability.

It claimed Vanessa had become Lily’s primary caregiver.

“That is absurd,” Ethan said.

“That was the plan,” Camila whispered.

“What was supposed to happen after Lily left?”

“Vanessa would tell you the separation had caused a breakdown.”

“My breakdown?”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“She would persuade you to take a temporary leave from the company.”

“Leaving her with authority.”

“Celeste’s firm had already drafted a management agreement.”

Daniel examined the files.

“This is conspiracy.”

Camila nodded.

“Vanessa believed you would sign anything after the wedding.”

“Why?”

“Because she planned to tell you Lily had demanded to leave.”

Ethan looked away.

Without the note, he might have believed it.

He hated himself for knowing that.

“Who wrote the confession found in Lily’s desk?”

Camila stared at the table.

“Vanessa.”

“The handwriting looked like a child’s.”

“She practiced.”

Camila opened a photograph showing sheets of paper filled with uneven letters.

Lily’s name had been written again and again.

“Who planted the bracelet?”

“I did.”

Ethan rose so quickly that the table shook.

Camila recoiled.

Daniel stood between them.

“You entered my daughter’s room?”

Camila began sobbing.

“Vanessa told me it was only to prove Lily was stealing.”

“You helped frame an eight-year-old.”

“I know.”

“You watched her terrorize my child.”

“I know.”

“And you did nothing until the wedding collapsed.”

Camila reached inside her coat.

Daniel tensed.

She removed an envelope.

“I kept this because I knew one day I would need proof.”

Inside was a letter signed by Celeste.

It promised Camila a payment of two hundred thousand dollars after the trust petition succeeded.

The payment was described as a performance bonus.

“You were being paid,” Ethan said.

“I never received it.”

“That does not make you innocent.”

“No.”

Her voice steadied.

“I am not asking to be innocent.”

She looked directly at him.

“I am asking to help Lily.”

Ethan sat down again.

“Why now?”

“Because Vanessa told me to destroy the phone.”

“That frightened you?”

“No.”

Camila wiped her face.

“What frightened me was what she said next.”

“What did she say?”

“She said the note had failed, the school plan had failed, and now Lily had to be made unbelievable permanently.”

Ethan’s blood went cold.

“What does that mean?”

“I asked her.”

Camila unlocked the phone and played a voicemail.

Vanessa’s voice filled the booth.

Children have accidents, Camila.

Children run away.

Children say terrible things when they want attention.

All we need is one event big enough that no one trusts her again.

The recording ended.

Ethan stood.

He called Rose immediately.

She answered after one ring.

“Is Lily with you?”

“Yes.”

“Lock every door.”

“Ethan?”

“Do not let her out of your sight.”

He turned toward Daniel.

“We are going to get her.”

Daniel gathered the phone and documents.

Camila grabbed Ethan’s sleeve.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Vanessa knows about the hidden road behind the Bennett property.”

Ethan froze.

May you like

“How?”

“She had me map every entrance two weeks ago.”
