Later that night...
The house was finally quiet.
His wife fell asleep on the couch, exhausted.
He covered her with a blanket.
Then returned to the kitchen.
His mother was waiting.
"I've sacrificed everything for this family," she said.
"You embarrassed me."
He nodded slowly.
"I know."
She blinked.
"You know?"
"I know you've always expected everyone to put your comfort first."
Her face tightened.
"But that ends tonight."
She crossed her arms.
"So you're choosing your wife over your family?"
He didn't hesitate.
"She is my family."
The words cut deeper than shouting ever could.
"You've criticized her since the day we married."
"You've convinced her she isn't good enough."
"You watched her carry our child while serving everyone in this house."
He took a slow breath.
"I should have stopped it sooner."
His mother's eyes filled with anger.
"You'd throw your own mother out?"
"I'd never throw you out."
He picked up her suitcase from beside the hallway.
"But tomorrow...
you're moving into the apartment I already rented."
Every relative stared.
"You planned this?"
"I hoped I'd never need it."
"But I won't let my son grow up believing love looks like this."
