Chapter 2 — Lines Drawn

Chapter 2 — Lines Drawn
He walked into the kitchen.
Without saying another word, he gently took the sponge from his wife's trembling hands.
"Go sit down."
She looked confused.
"But dinner..."
"I'm not asking."
He smiled softly.
"I'm telling you."
She hesitated.
Years of apologizing for existing had taught her to obey everyone except herself.
He pulled out a chair.
Helped her sit.
Then knelt beside her swollen feet.
His relatives watched from the doorway.
Without embarrassment...
Without hesitation...
He removed her slippers.
Her ankles were badly swollen.
Red marks covered her feet from standing too long.
He grabbed a clean towel.
Filled a bowl with cool water.
Carefully wrapped the towel around her feet.
His mother scoffed.
"You're treating her like she's helpless."
He looked over his shoulder.
"No."
"I'm treating her like she's loved."
The room became painfully quiet.
Then he stood.
Pointed toward the overflowing sink.
"If you ate here today..."
He looked around the room.
"...you wash your own dishes."
Nobody moved.
He folded his arms.
"I'll wait."
One by one...
The phones disappeared.

The first plate entered the sink.
No one complained again.
