Chapter 17 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Martin’s attorney claimed Cassandra had masterminded everything.

Cassandra’s attorney claimed Martin had manipulated her.

Both were partly true.

That was the problem with conspiracies built from selfish people.

Everyone was guilty.

Everyone also possessed evidence against someone worse.

Investigators did not need Alexander to decide criminal outcomes.

That belonged to prosecutors and courts.

His job was simpler.

Protect Lily.

Repair the foundation.

Stop lying to himself.

The board adopted reforms.

No family member could unilaterally direct major expenditures.

Independent disability advocates received permanent voting seats.

Lily’s future Elena voting rights remained protected.

No spouse of Alexander would ever receive authority simply through marriage.

Not that Alexander planned to marry anyone anytime soon.

Rosa was offered a new role.

Director of Family Experience.

She laughed.

“I clean houses.”

Alexander smiled.

“You understand families better than half the consultants we’ve paid.”

“I don’t have a degree.”

“We’ll support education if you want it.”

Rosa thought.

Then:

“I want to work with parents.”

“Then do that.”

She eventually accepted a role as family liaison while continuing limited hours at the estate because Lily insisted.

Owen pleaded guilty to financial disclosure violations and cooperated.

His career with Alexander was over.

But Alexander wrote one statement acknowledging Owen’s cooperation.

Not forgiveness.

Accuracy.

Cassandra returned funds and cooperated fully.

Her public image collapsed.

Brands disappeared.

Gala invitations vanished.

The society pages that once adored her moved on.

Alexander found that consequence strangely appropriate.

She had built identity from being watched.

Then discovered attention could disappear overnight.

Martin returned under counsel.

The investigation expanded.

The foundation recovered most of the missing funds through freezes, insurance, settlements and asset recovery.

Not every dollar.

Reality rarely restored itself perfectly.

But the mission survived.

More importantly, it changed.

Then Alexander did something no one expected.

He stepped down as foundation chair.

Gabriel stared.

“Why?”

“Because Elena didn’t build it for me.”

“You could stay.”

“I’ll stay on the board.”

“Why not chair?”

Alexander looked toward Lily, practicing cane skills in the foundation courtyard.

“Because I’m finally learning that loving something does not mean you should control it.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Elena would enjoy hearing you say that.”

“She’d make me repeat it.”

“Probably.”

A nationally respected disability-rights executive became chair.

No society celebrity.

No billionaire spouse.

Someone who actually understood the mission.

That evening Alexander returned home at 6:12.

Lily was in the music room.

She heard him.

“You’re early.”

“Again.”

“Your office must really be broken.”

He laughed.

Then the doorbell rang.

Rosa checked.

A courier.

Package for Lily.

No sender.

Alexander’s body tightened.

Naomi was contacted.

The box was inspected.

Safe.

Inside was Lily’s stuffed rabbit.

The one Cassandra had given her two years earlier.

Lily already had it upstairs.

Or thought she did.

Alexander stared.

Then realized.

This was the original.

The rabbit upstairs was a replacement Cassandra had purchased months earlier.

Why?

Inside the original rabbit’s fabric seam was a tiny object.

A digital recorder.

Alexander went cold.

May you like

Cassandra had hidden a recording device inside Lily’s favorite toy.

And someone had just returned it.
