Chapter 10 - WHAT LILY HEARD

Alexander never interrogated Lily.
Naomi insisted.
A child specialist conducted the interview gently.
No leading questions.
No pressure.
Lily remembered fragments.
Cassandra and Martin speaking in the library.
Cassandra saying:
“He feels guilty about everything.”
Martin:
“Good. Guilt makes people sign.”
Another conversation.
Cassandra:
“What if he changes his mind?”
Martin:
“Then we already have enough approvals to create confusion.”
Another.
Cassandra:
“And Lily?”
Martin:
“Residential program.”
Lily did not understand what it meant at the time.
But she remembered Cassandra’s answer.
“She’ll hate me.”
Martin said:
“She’s seven.”
Then:
“She’ll get over it.”
Alexander walked out of the observation room.
He made it to the bathroom before vomiting.
Naomi waited outside.
When he returned, she said nothing for several seconds.
Then:
“We have enough to freeze Martin out of the foundation.”
“Do it.”
They filed emergency applications.
Financial accounts were preserved.
The board vote paused.
Martin responded within hours.
Aggressively.
He denied wrongdoing.
Claimed Cassandra manipulated everyone.
Claimed Alexander’s accusations were the product of “emotional instability.”
Then the edited therapy recordings appeared online.
Exactly as Cassandra predicted.
A gossip site posted them.
Billionaire Father Admits He Wanted to “Disappear” From Blind Daughter.
The headline spread.
Context disappeared.
Alexander’s phone exploded.
Reporters.
Board members.
Investors.
Donors.
He stared at the screen.
Lily walked into the room.
Rosa immediately tried to turn off the television.
Too late.
Lily heard the reporter say:
“Questions are now being raised about Alexander Hale’s fitness as a parent…”
Lily froze.
“What does fitness mean?”
Alexander crossed the room.
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
“Did you want to disappear?”
He stopped.
He could lie.
He didn’t.
“Yes.”
Rosa stared.
Alexander knelt.
“After Mommy died, I was very sad.”
“So you wanted to leave?”
“I wanted the pain to stop.”
“Did you want me to go away?”
“Never.”
Lily reached for his face.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
She touched the wetness beneath his eye.
“You’re crying.”
“Yes.”
“Boys can cry.”
“Elena taught you that?”
“Rosa.”
Rosa smiled through tears.
That night Alexander made a decision.
No media counterattack using Lily.
No parade of childhood footage.
No turning his daughter into a public defense exhibit.
He released one statement.
Private grief counseling was illegally obtained and selectively edited.
I will address the legal issues through appropriate channels.
My daughter will not be used as content in an adult dispute.
Nothing more.
Some advisors called it weak.
Naomi called it correct.
Then the financial audit arrived.
They had expected suspicious payments of $2.5 million.
Actual exposure:
$8.7 million.
And the person authorizing the largest transfers was not Cassandra.
Not Martin.
Not Senator Wren.
The electronic approvals belonged to Alexander himself.
This time, forensic experts concluded the credentials were genuine.
Someone had not forged his signature.
May you like
Someone had used Alexander’s real authenticated device.
And one approval had occurred while Alexander was physically holding that device.
