7:42 PM.
Alexander remembered the date.
Foundation gala.
Chicago.
Cassandra beside him.
Hundreds of people.
His phone in his jacket pocket.
The approval authorized $3.2 million toward a “development acquisition reserve.”
Biometric authentication.
Face ID.
His face.
Alexander stared at the log.
“I approved this?”
Naomi answered carefully.
“Your device did.”
“I would remember three million dollars.”
“Maybe you approved something presented differently.”
Then Alexander remembered.
Cassandra had brought him a tablet backstage.
“Quick donor authorization.”
He had been preparing a speech.
“Just approve the event reserve.”
He glanced at the screen.
A number.
Legal language.
He scanned.
Used Face ID.
Handed it back.
Thirty seconds.
Three million dollars.
He sat down.
“I did it.”
Naomi said:
“You were deceived.”
“I signed it.”
“Both can be true.”
Alexander finally understood how the scheme survived.
Not all the signatures were fake.
Some were manipulated.
Small approvals disguised as other things.
Trust exploited through speed.
He had built an empire by making hundreds of decisions a week.
Cassandra and Martin hid theft inside his efficiency.
They understood his greatest professional strength could become his weakness.
Alexander whispered:
“I stopped reading.”
Naomi looked at him.
“Yes.”
He expected comfort.
She gave him truth.
“You trusted a process you shouldn’t have trusted.”
That mattered.
Because Alexander could prosecute fraud and still acknowledge failure.
The $3.2 million had not disappeared.
It sat in escrow for the Wren property acquisition.
They could stop it.
But the remaining questionable payments were already scattered.
Investigators entered formally.
Martin resigned from the board.
Senator Wren denied knowledge of improper arrangements.
Cassandra requested a proffer meeting through counsel.
She was ready to cooperate.
Alexander did not attend.
He didn’t need to hear her excuses.
Meanwhile, Rosa became the target of anonymous rumors.
Posts claimed she had manipulated Lily against Cassandra.
One tabloid offered her money.
Rosa refused.
Then someone released footage.
Edited footage.
Rosa raising her voice at Lily.
“Stop.”
“Sit down.”
“Don’t move.”
Taken from a moment when Lily had broken glass near bare feet.
Online, context disappeared.
Alexander watched public opinion turn.
The same machine Cassandra used to build herself as compassionate could destroy Rosa in hours.
Rosa came to him.
“I should leave.”
“No.”
“It will stop if I leave.”
“No.”
“Mr. Hale—”
“Alexander.”
She looked at him.
“You spent months standing between my daughter and someone who had power over you.”
His voice tightened.
“I’m not letting you stand alone now because strangers on the internet misunderstand twenty seconds.”
Rosa cried.
Then Alexander’s company board called an emergency meeting.
Not the foundation.
Hale Industries.
The directors were concerned the family scandal was affecting governance.
His chairmanship was not immediately threatened.
But one director said:
“You need to make this disappear.”
Alexander asked:
“How?”
“Settle.”
“With Cassandra?”
“With everyone.”
Alexander stared.
“You want me to buy silence.”
“I want stability.”
Alexander suddenly heard Martin.
Control.
Stability.
Reputation.
The words powerful people used when they wanted truth to become inconvenient.
Alexander stood.
“No.”
The director frowned.
“No?”
“For years I have paid people to solve problems quickly.”
Alexander closed his folder.
“That is part of how this happened.”
He walked out.
Two hours later, Cassandra’s attorney sent an offer.
Return part of the foundation money.
Full cooperation against Martin.
Permanent departure from the board.
In exchange:
The deleted household recordings would remain confidential.
Alexander stared at the clause.
They wanted the evidence of what happened to Lily buried.
Naomi asked:
“What do you want?”
Alexander answered:
“I want Lily to grow up knowing we didn’t trade her truth for convenience.”
He rejected the deal.
