Chapter 9: The Daughter Lauren Hid

The church windows filled with headlights.

One after another.

A dozen black vehicles surrounded the old building.

Daniel held the little girl tighter.

She didn't cry.

She didn't struggle.

She simply stared over his shoulder at the people she had been taught to fear.

Evelyn was still on the floor.

Her face had gone completely white.

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you tell them?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

The little girl whispered:

“Yes.”

Daniel's eyes hardened.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked up.

“I didn't know where she was.”

“You just said Lauren was being watched.”

“I knew they were looking for her.”

“Did you tell them where she was going?”

“No.”

The girl spoke again.

“Grandma told them about the clinic.”

Everyone turned.

Anna froze.

“The clinic?”

The child nodded.

“Mommy said Grandma called a man.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Who?”

Evelyn began trembling.

“I don't remember.”

“You don't remember?”

“It was fourteen months ago.”

“Try.”

“I was scared.”

“You've been scared for eleven years.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“And somehow everyone else has been paying for it.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I thought I was saving you.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I believed if Lauren disappeared, they would stop.”

Daniel stared.

“They didn't.”

“No.”

“They killed her.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Daniel's voice dropped.

“And my daughter?”

The little girl looked up at him.

“Her name is Lily.”

Daniel froze.

He remembered the name.

Lauren had once written it on a piece of paper.

He had found it in her desk.

He had assumed it was a client's child.

Lily.

He had never known.

“Lily,” he whispered.

The girl nodded.

“My mommy called me Lily.”

Daniel knelt.

“Is she really my daughter?”

Lily nodded.

“She said you were my daddy.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

He wanted to ask a thousand questions.

Instead, he asked the only one that mattered.

“Where is your mother?”

Lily looked down.

“She told me not to be afraid.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Where is she?”

Lily pointed toward the ground.

“Under the church.”

Richard stared at the floor.

“There's a crypt.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

Richard walked toward the altar.

“Your grandfather built it.”

Claire looked horrified.

“You knew?”

“I knew the church was used as a safe location.”

“For whom?”

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Open it.”

Richard hesitated.

“Daniel—”

“Open it.”

Richard moved the old wooden altar aside.

Beneath it was a metal hatch.

He entered a combination.

The lock clicked.

Cold air rose from below.

Daniel looked at Lily.

She nodded.

“Mommy is down there.”

They descended.

The chamber beneath the church was larger than Daniel expected.

Concrete walls.

Old pipes.

A generator.

Medical equipment.

And a single bed.

Daniel stopped.

A photograph of Lauren was taped to the wall.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

IF DANIEL FINDS LILY, TELL HIM I NEVER STOPPED LOVING HIM.

Daniel touched the paper.

His fingers trembled.

Then he saw something else.

A hospital bracelet.

LAUREN MORRISON

Daniel's heart raced.

“Where is she?”

Lily pointed to a locked door.

“She was there.”

Daniel opened it.

Empty.

Only a chair.

A blanket.

A bloodstained cloth.

Daniel froze.

“No.”

Anna stepped beside him.

“Daniel…”

He picked up the cloth.

There was a tiny silver necklace beneath it.

Lauren's.

The one she wore the night she died.

Daniel had buried her wearing a different necklace.

His knees weakened.

“She was here.”

Richard nodded.

“When?”

“Recently.”

“How recently?”

Richard checked the medical supplies.

“Three days ago.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Three days?”

Richard's expression was grim.

“Someone moved her.”

“Who?”

A voice came from behind them.

“Me.”

Everyone turned.

Marcus stood in the doorway.

Daniel raised his weapon.

“You.”

Marcus slowly lifted his hands.

“I moved her.”

“Where?”

“She was alive.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

Marcus looked at him.

“Lauren survived the crash.”

The room went silent.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me bury an empty coffin?”

Marcus's face twisted with guilt.

“I didn't know where they took her.”

“You just said you moved her.”

“I moved her from the hospital.”

“When?”

“The night of the crash.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“Because they were coming.”

“Who?”

“The Circle.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You should have told me.”

Marcus shook his head.

“They had your children watched.”

“I could have protected her.”

“No.”

Marcus's voice cracked.

“You couldn't even protect yourself.”

Daniel nearly struck him.

Richard stepped between them.

“Where is Lauren?”

Marcus looked at Lily.

“That's the problem.”

Daniel waited.

“She was moved again.”

“By whom?”

Marcus's face became pale.

“Your mother.”

Evelyn appeared at the doorway.

“I didn't hurt her.”

Daniel turned.

“Where is she?”

Evelyn began to cry.

“I don't know.”

Daniel's patience snapped.

“You keep saying that.”

“I swear.”

“You're lying.”

“I sent Lauren somewhere safe.”

“Where?”

Evelyn looked at Lily.

“Because she had to disappear.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“She was my wife.”

“I know.”

“She was the mother of my children.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe she was dead.”

“I had to.”

“No.”

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“You chose to.”

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Then Lily suddenly grabbed Daniel's hand.

“Daddy.”

He looked down.

“What?”

“She left you something.”

Lily reached inside her coat.

She pulled out a small cassette recorder.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

Lauren's.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Lauren's voice.

“Daniel…”

His chest tightened.

“If you're hearing this, Lily found you.”

A pause.

“I wish I could have been there.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Lauren continued.

“I know what my death looked like.”

A faint breath.

“I know what you were told.”

The recording crackled.

“But the accident wasn't meant to kill me.”

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Marcus lowered his head.

“They were trying to take Lily.”

Daniel's heart stopped.

Lauren's voice continued.

“They discovered she was your daughter.”

Daniel stared at Lily.

“I knew what would happen if the Circle got her.”

A pause.

“So I made a choice.”

Daniel whispered:

“What choice?”

Lauren answered from the recorder.

“I let them believe I died.”

Daniel's face changed.

“She faked it.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“She had help.”

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You.”

“Yes.”

Lauren continued:

“Marcus helped me leave.”

Daniel's anger returned.

“But he couldn't protect Lily alone.”

The recording crackled.

“So I trusted someone I believed I could still trust.”

Silence.

Then Lauren whispered:

“Your mother.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Daniel turned toward her.

Lauren continued.

“Mom promised she would protect Lily.”

The recording stopped.

Daniel stared at the machine.

“That's not what Lily said.”

Lily shook her head.

“Mommy said Grandma told them.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“What happened?”

Evelyn finally broke.

“I made a deal.”

“With who?”

“The Circle.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“What did you give them?”

“Information.”

“About Lauren?”

“Yes.”

“About Lily?”

“Yes.”

Daniel's face went cold.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked at her son.

“Because they had Richard.”

Daniel turned.

Richard looked away.

Evelyn continued.

“They threatened to kill your father.”

Daniel stared.

“So you traded Lauren and Lily for Dad.”

“I thought I could get them back.”

“But you couldn't.”

“No.”

Evelyn began sobbing.

“They took Lauren.”

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“And you?”

“I found Lily.”

“Where?”

“In a safe house.”

“Why didn't you bring her to me?”

“Because the Circle had already infiltrated your security team.”

Daniel remembered the photograph.

The safe room.

The seventeen-minute delay.

He looked at Lily.

“She was watching me.”

Marcus nodded.

“For fourteen months.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Lily?”

Marcus nodded.

“Lauren wanted to make sure you were safe before she came back.”

Daniel's throat tightened.

“She was protecting me?”

“Yes.”

A loud explosion shook the church.

Everyone ducked.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Claire shouted:

“They're inside!”

Marcus pulled his weapon.

Richard grabbed Evelyn.

Daniel lifted Lily.

“Where's Jordan and Justin?”

Anna's face went white.

“They're upstairs.”

Daniel ran.

The church erupted into chaos.

Gunfire cracked through the walls.

Glass shattered.

People screamed.

Daniel reached the staircase.

Jordan and Justin were nowhere in sight.

“Boys!”

No answer.

He searched the sanctuary.

Empty.

Then he saw a small blue backpack on the floor.

Justin's.

Daniel's heart stopped.

A door slammed behind him.

He spun.

A masked man stood there.

Daniel raised his gun.

The man raised his.

Neither fired.

Then the man slowly removed his mask.

Daniel froze.

It was Thomas.

His supposedly dead uncle.

Thomas looked at him.

“You have no idea what you've uncovered.”

“Where are my sons?”

Thomas smiled.

“They're safe.”

“Where?”

“With someone who loves them.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Lauren?”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Thomas stepped backward.

“The woman you were told never existed.”

Daniel felt cold.

“Who?”

Thomas smiled.

“Your sister.”

Daniel's face went blank.

“Sophia?”

“No.”

Thomas disappeared through the doorway.

Daniel chased him.

But the corridor was empty.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

“Daniel.”

He knew that voice.

Lauren.

His knees almost buckled.

“Lauren?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't have much time.”

“Where are the boys?”

“With me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Are they safe?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Don't come.”

“I am coming.”

“No.”

Her voice became urgent.

“Listen to me.”

Daniel stopped.

“You cannot trust your father.”

Richard's face changed.

Daniel looked at him.

Lauren continued:

“And you cannot trust Marcus.”

Marcus went pale.

Daniel whispered:

“Why?”

“Because one of them betrayed me.”

“Which one?”

Silence.

Then Lauren whispered:

“I don't know anymore.”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Then a message appeared.

A location.

An abandoned Morrison Dynamics laboratory.

BUILDING 2B.

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard's face drained of color.

“No.”

Daniel asked:

“What is there?”

Richard whispered:

“The original laboratory.”

“What happened there?”

Richard stared at him.

“That is where the Circle began.”

Daniel looked at the location.

Then at the twins' empty backpacks.

Then at Lily.

He understood.

This was no longer about uncovering the past.

Someone was forcing him to walk directly into it.

And somewhere inside Building 2B—

May you like

Lauren was waiting.

Or someone who wanted Daniel to believe she was.
