Chapter 8: The Lie Lauren Died For

Daniel stood in the middle of the woods, staring at the place where the man had disappeared.
The photograph was still in his hand.
Five words had destroyed whatever certainty he had left.
YOUR MOTHER DID.
Behind him, Evelyn was on her knees.
Anna was beside her.
Marcus stood several yards away, breathing hard, his gun still raised toward the trees.
Claire was watching everyone.
The twins were silent.
Too silent.
Daniel slowly turned.
“Mom.”
Evelyn didn't look up.
“Tell me it's a lie.”
She closed her eyes.
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Tell me.”
“I can't.”
The words barely escaped her mouth.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
“You killed Lauren?”
“No.”
Evelyn finally looked at him.
“I didn't kill her.”
“Then why did he say you did?”
“Because he knows what I did.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn looked at Richard.
Her husband shook his head.
“Don't protect me anymore.”
She lowered her gaze.
“I gave the order.”
Daniel stopped.
“For what?”
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“To make Lauren disappear.”
The woods went silent.
Daniel stared at her.
“You wanted her gone?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she found the ledger.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You were afraid she'd expose you.”
“I was afraid she'd expose everyone.”
“Everyone?”
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“Your company. Your father. Me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You knew Lauren was in danger.”
“Yes.”
“You knew someone was following her.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was investigating Morrison Dynamics.”
“Yes.”
“And you still let her drive that night.”
Evelyn began to cry.
“I didn't know they would kill her.”
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“You didn't know?”
“No.”
“Then what did you think would happen?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I thought they'd take her.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
“The people who own the network.”
Richard interrupted.
“They don't own it.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“They control it.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was cold.
“They control the people who think they control it.”
Daniel looked between them.
“What are you talking about?”
Richard stepped closer.
“The organization has a name.”
Daniel waited.
Richard said:
“The Meridian Circle.”
Marcus's face went pale.
Claire whispered:
“That's impossible.”
Richard looked at her.
“No.”
He pointed toward the black SUV parked beyond the trees.
“They've been watching us for eleven years.”
Daniel looked at the vehicle.
“Then why haven't they killed us?”
Richard answered:
“Because they don't want us dead.”
“Then what do they want?”
Richard's eyes moved to the twins.
“They want an heir.”
Daniel felt a chill.
They reached the old church just before dawn.
The building was abandoned.
Broken stained glass.
Dust-covered pews.
A bell tower leaning slightly toward the eastern sky.
Richard unlocked the side door.
Inside, everything smelled of rain and old wood.
Daniel carried Justin.
Jordan stayed close to Anna.
Evelyn walked behind them.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Daniel turned.
“Why my children?”
Richard looked at the boys.
“Because Morrison blood matters to them.”
“Why?”
“Because the ledger contains more than names.”
Daniel waited.
“It contains ownership.”
“Ownership of what?”
“Companies. Banks. Property. Political organizations.”
Richard paused.
“And something else.”
“What?”
“Control.”
Daniel frowned.
Richard continued.
“The Morrison family wasn't merely moving money.”
“We were buying influence.”
Daniel looked sick.
“And the twins?”
“They are the first direct Morrison heirs born outside the Circle's control.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“So they want my sons.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever controls them…”
Richard looked at Daniel.
“…controls the future of Morrison Dynamics.”
Daniel shook his head.
“They're children.”
Richard's voice softened.
“That is why they're valuable.”
Daniel looked down at Justin.
The boy was asleep against his shoulder.
His face was peaceful.
Completely unaware that powerful people were hunting him.
Daniel kissed the top of his head.
“No one touches them.”
At 5:42 a.m., Daniel discovered the second room.
It was hidden behind the altar.
A narrow staircase led underground.
At the bottom was a stone chamber.
Richard turned on the lights.
Daniel stared.
The walls were covered with documents.
Photographs.
Maps.
Financial records.
Names.
Hundreds of names.
Some were crossed out.
Some were marked with red circles.
One photograph immediately caught Daniel's attention.
Lauren.
She was standing beside a woman Daniel didn't recognize.
The woman wore a hospital uniform.
Daniel looked at Anna.
“Your mother?”
Anna nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel picked up another photograph.
Lauren was younger.
Maybe twenty-six.
Standing beside Anna as a child.
Daniel frowned.
“Lauren knew you before she met me.”
Anna nodded.
“She did.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“Because she promised my mother.”
“Promised what?”
“That she'd keep me hidden.”
Daniel looked at her.
“From the Circle?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Anna hesitated.
“Because my mother stole something from them.”
“What?”
“A birth record.”
Daniel froze.
Anna pointed toward a file.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a document dated June 14, 1991.
CHILD: FEMALE
MOTHER: UNKNOWN
FATHER: RICHARD MORRISON
Daniel looked at Anna.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“That's me.”
Daniel couldn't speak.
His father's name was there.
His date of birth.
His biological record.
But the mother's name had been blacked out.
“Who is your mother?”
Anna whispered:
“Clara Reed.”
Daniel looked at the document again.
Then he noticed something.
A handwritten note.
SECOND CHILD — FEMALE — MORRISON BLOODLINE CONFIRMED.
Daniel's face changed.
“Second child?”
Anna nodded.
“Lauren wasn't the first.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Anna pointed at the document.
“She was.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
Anna's voice shook.
“Lauren was born three years before me.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“You said you were half-sisters.”
“We are.”
“Then who was the first child?”
Anna's eyes moved to Evelyn.
Evelyn stood frozen.
Daniel turned.
“Mom?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You had another sister.”
Daniel's face went blank.
“What?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Your father had another daughter before you were born.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Who?”
Evelyn couldn't answer.
Richard did.
“Her name was Sophia.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“Where is she?”
Silence.
Then Claire stepped forward.
“She died.”
Richard looked at her.
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed to a photograph.
“That isn't Sophia.”
Daniel approached.
The photograph showed a young woman.
Late twenties.
Dark hair.
Standing beside Lauren.
Daniel stared.
“I know her.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel pointed at the photograph.
“She was at Lauren's funeral.”
Anna frowned.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Daniel remembered.
A woman had stood at the back of the church.
She had cried silently.
He had assumed she was one of Lauren's friends.
Then she disappeared.
Daniel whispered:
“Her name was Sophia.”
Richard looked at the photograph.
His face drained of color.
“She survived.”
A loud knock echoed through the church.
Everyone froze.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Three more.
Marcus reached for his gun.
Richard whispered:
“Don't open it.”
The knocking continued.
Then a woman's voice came through the door.
“Daniel?”
Daniel knew the voice.
He looked at Evelyn.
She shook her head.
“No.”
The voice came again.
“Daniel, please.”
Daniel stepped toward the door.
Richard grabbed him.
“It's a trap.”
Daniel looked at the window.
A woman stood outside.
Dark coat.
Wet hair.
Hands raised.
Daniel could see her face.
It was the woman from the photograph.
Sophia.
She mouthed:
Help me.
Daniel opened the door.
Richard shouted:
“Daniel!”
Too late.
Sophia rushed inside.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Who are you?”
She looked at him.
“My name is Sophia Morrison.”
Evelyn began to cry.
Sophia stared at her.
“You abandoned me.”
Evelyn whispered:
“I thought you were dead.”
Sophia laughed bitterly.
“You were supposed to.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“What happened?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Your grandfather ordered my death.”
“Why?”
“Because I found the ledger.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Again.
The ledger.
Everyone had been hunting it.
Sophia continued.
“Lauren found me fourteen months ago.”
Daniel's eyes snapped open.
“You knew Lauren?”
“She saved me.”
“Then why didn't she tell me?”
“Because she knew you were being watched.”
Daniel remembered the seventeen-minute gap.
The black SUV.
His phone.
The man.
Everything connected.
Sophia reached inside her coat.
She pulled out a small black book.
Daniel's heart stopped.
The cover was embossed with a silver crown.
The same symbol.
“The Morrison Black Book.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Where did you get that?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Lauren gave it to me.”
Daniel stared.
“Before she died?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew your mother would come for it.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I never wanted the book.”
Sophia laughed.
“You're lying.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“I wanted the ledger.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“The ledger and the book are different?”
Sophia nodded.
“The ledger tells you who was paid.”
She opened the black book.
“The Black Book tells you who owns them.”
Daniel looked at the pages.
Names.
Companies.
Bank accounts.
Political campaigns.
Judges.
Police departments.
Then he saw a name.
MARCUS HALE.
Daniel slowly looked up.
Marcus stood at the other side of the room.
His face was expressionless.
Daniel's voice was cold.
“You told me you were only an employee.”
Marcus didn't answer.
“You worked for the Circle.”
Marcus sighed.
“Yes.”
Daniel raised his weapon.
“How long?”
“Twenty-two years.”
Anna stepped back.
Claire looked horrified.
Richard's expression became furious.
“You swore you left.”
“I tried.”
Daniel stared.
“Did you kill Lauren?”
Marcus looked directly at him.
“No.”
“Did you order her followed?”
“Yes.”
Daniel's finger tightened around the trigger.
“Why?”
“Because I was trying to find the ledger before they did.”
Daniel lowered his weapon slightly.
“Why?”
Marcus looked at the twins.
“Because Lauren was right.”
“What?”
“The Circle wasn't trying to kill your family.”
Marcus's voice dropped.
“They were trying to replace it.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus looked at Sophia.
“Ask her.”
Sophia's face went pale.
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Sophia slowly shook her head.
“I don't know what he's talking about.”
Marcus smiled.
“You do.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell me.”
Sophia looked at the twins.
Then at Daniel.
Then she whispered:
“The Circle has another heir.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
Marcus corrected her.
“You do.”
He pointed toward the church doors.
Everyone turned.
A small figure stood there.
A little girl.
About seven years old.
Dark hair.
Pale face.
Holding a faded photograph.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
She was the girl Lauren had brought to the clinic.
The girl who had disappeared the morning after Lauren died.
Anna gasped.
“No…”
The little girl looked at Daniel.
Then at Sophia.
Then at Evelyn.
Finally, she held out the photograph.
Daniel walked toward her.
“What's your name?”
The girl didn't answer.
She turned the photograph around.
Daniel looked.
It showed Lauren.
The girl.
And one more person.
Daniel's face went white.
The third person was him.
But the photograph was dated three months before Daniel met Lauren.
Daniel looked at the girl.
“How?”
The girl finally spoke.
Her voice was soft.
Almost identical to Lauren's.
“Because Mommy knew you before you knew her.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“Who is your mommy?”
The girl pointed toward Sophia.
“No.”
Sophia began shaking her head.
The little girl pointed again.
“She is.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
And Daniel heard Marcus whisper behind him:
“That's the reason Lauren had to die.”
Daniel turned.
“Why?”
Marcus looked at the child.
“Because she's not Sophia's daughter.”
He looked at Daniel.
“She is your daughter.”
The church went silent.
Daniel stared at the little girl.
His mind refused to understand.
He looked at Sophia.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Evelyn.
“No.”
Sophia began to cry.
Marcus whispered:
“Lauren gave birth to her before the twins.”
Daniel couldn't breathe.
“And she was hidden because…”
Marcus looked toward the church doors.
Outside, black SUVs were appearing through the fog.
“…because the Circle discovered she existed.”
Daniel pulled the little girl into his arms.
She didn't resist.
She simply whispered against his chest:
“Mommy told me you would come.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then she added:
“But Mommy also told me something else.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What?”
The girl looked toward Evelyn.
“She said…”
A pause.
“…Grandma was the one who told them where to find her.”
May you like
Evelyn collapsed.
And outside the church, dozens of headlights switched on at once.
