Chapter 7: The Man Beneath the House

The footsteps continued.
One step.
Then another.
Slow.
Unhurried.
As if whoever was coming down the staircase knew there was nowhere for them to run.
Daniel held both boys close.
Jordan's fingers dug into his shirt.
Justin whispered against his chest.
“Daddy…”
“I've got you.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus had gone completely still.
His gun was raised toward the passage.
Claire moved in front of the twins.
Anna stood beside Evelyn.
Nobody spoke.
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.
Then a man descended.
He was tall.
Older.
His hair was almost completely gray.
A dark coat hung from his shoulders.
He walked with a slight limp.
Daniel stared.
Something inside him recognized the man before his mind accepted him.
The stranger reached the bottom step.
The emergency light illuminated his face.
Daniel's breath caught.
His father.
Richard Morrison.
Alive.
Older.
Scarred.
But unmistakably him.
Daniel's knees almost gave out.
Richard looked at him.
For several seconds, neither father nor son spoke.
Then Richard whispered:
“Danny.”
Daniel flinched.
The same nickname.
The same voice.
The same man he had spent eleven years mourning.
But Daniel didn't move toward him.
Instead, he raised his gun.
“Stay where you are.”
Richard stopped.
His eyes filled with pain.
“I knew you would do that.”
“You're supposed to be dead.”
“Yes.”
“My mother is supposed to be dead.”
“Yes.”
“My uncle is supposed to be dead.”
Richard looked at Claire.
“And apparently he isn't.”
Claire gave a cold smile.
“You always were good at understatement.”
Daniel's eyes never left his father.
“Why?”
Richard took a breath.
“Because I failed you.”
“That's not an answer.”
“No.”
Richard's voice shook.
“It isn't.”
He looked at the twins.
“Are those my grandsons?”
Daniel tightened his grip.
“Don't.”
Richard nodded.
“I understand.”
“No, you don't.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don't get to disappear for eleven years and walk back into my life.”
“I didn't disappear.”
“You faked your death.”
“I was forced to.”
“By who?”
Richard's eyes shifted toward Marcus.
Marcus looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“Marcus?”
Richard said nothing.
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“Was it Marcus?”
Richard shook his head.
“Not alone.”
Then Richard looked at Evelyn.
“It was your mother who made the final decision.”
Daniel turned.
His mother closed her eyes.
“Mom?”
Evelyn whispered:
“I had no choice.”
“You always say that.”
Daniel's voice cracked.
“Everyone keeps saying they had no choice.”
He looked at Richard.
“Then tell me who made you choose.”
Richard stepped closer.
“The Morrison Foundation.”
Daniel frowned.
“My grandfather's foundation?”
Richard nodded.
“The organization was never a charity.”
Daniel stared.
“What was it?”
“A network.”
“What kind?”
Richard's expression hardened.
“Power.”
They moved into the underground chamber.
Richard shut the steel door behind them.
The room had clearly been built to survive an attack.
Thick concrete.
Independent power.
Water storage.
Old communication equipment.
On one wall hung dozens of photographs.
Daniel walked toward them.
His blood ran cold.
Lauren.
His father.
His mother.
Marcus.
Claire.
Anna.
The twins.
Even Daniel himself.
Different years.
Different locations.
Different ages.
Someone had been watching his family for a very long time.
“How long?”
Richard stood behind him.
“Since before you were born.”
Daniel stared at a photograph of himself at age seven.
He was standing outside his elementary school.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
The same vehicle.
The same symbol.
The crown.
Daniel touched the photograph.
“You watched me.”
“Yes.”
“You watched my entire life.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
Richard lowered his head.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Daniel turned.
“By letting me believe you were dead?”
“Yes.”
“By letting me believe Mom was dead?”
“Yes.”
“By letting me believe my uncle was dead?”
Richard looked at Claire.
“Thomas chose his own path.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“He chose survival.”
Daniel looked between them.
“What happened in 2009?”
Richard walked to the center of the room.
“That was the year I discovered what my father had built.”
He touched one of the photographs.
“The Foundation had been moving money for decades.”
Daniel frowned.
“Money from where?”
“Everywhere.”
“Why?”
“Influence.”
Richard pointed toward a wall covered with names.
“Judges. Police chiefs. Politicians. CEOs. Lawyers. Bankers.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“People were being bought.”
Richard nodded.
“Exactly.”
Lauren's words echoed in Daniel's mind.
They're buying people.
“She found it,” Daniel whispered.
Richard looked at him.
“Lauren found more than that.”
“What?”
“She found the ledger.”
Daniel's pulse quickened.
“What ledger?”
“The one that proves who paid whom.”
Daniel turned toward Marcus.
Marcus said nothing.
“Does it exist?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Richard looked at Evelyn.
She shook her head.
“Richard—”
“No more secrets.”
His voice was firm.
“Not now.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Lauren hid it.”
“Where?”
“She trusted someone.”
Daniel immediately thought of Anna.
Anna looked startled.
“No.”
Richard looked at her.
“Not you.”
Anna frowned.
“Then who?”
Richard's eyes moved to the twins.
Daniel felt a chill.
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“Lauren trusted her children.”
Jordan looked up.
“She said we had it.”
Daniel crouched.
“What did Mommy say?”
Jordan looked at Justin.
Then at their grandfather.
“She said the box was sleeping.”
Daniel frowned.
“What box?”
Justin answered:
“The blue one.”
Richard's face changed.
He looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn whispered:
“Oh God.”
Daniel noticed.
“What?”
Evelyn pointed toward the far wall.
“Your father's old study.”
Daniel followed her gaze.
A small metal panel was built into the concrete.
Richard entered a code.
The panel opened.
Inside was a narrow compartment.
Empty.
Daniel stared.
“The box is gone.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“When did you last check it?”
“Yesterday.”
“Who knew about it?”
Richard looked at Marcus.
Marcus slowly shook his head.
“I didn't.”
Claire laughed.
“Of course you didn't.”
Marcus glared at her.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“You always know more than you admit.”
Richard stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Daniel noticed something on the floor.
A tiny blue thread.
He picked it up.
“What's this?”
Jordan looked at it.
“That came from Mommy's box.”
Daniel stared at his son.
“When did you see it?”
“Before Mommy died.”
“What was inside?”
Jordan frowned, trying to remember.
“A book.”
“What book?”
“Daddy's book.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“My book?”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel's confusion deepened.
“Then whose?”
Jordan whispered:
“Grandpa's.”
Richard's face went white.
“That book was destroyed.”
Daniel stood.
“What book?”
Richard didn't answer.
Daniel grabbed his father's coat.
“What book?”
Richard finally said:
“The Morrison Black Book.”
A noise came from above.
Everyone froze.
Three sharp knocks.
Then silence.
Marcus immediately raised his weapon.
Richard shook his head.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“Because they want us to open the door.”
Claire moved closer.
“Who?”
Richard looked at the ceiling.
“They found the house.”
Daniel's stomach dropped.
“How?”
Richard pointed toward the security console.
“The system has been compromised.”
Daniel remembered the seventeen-minute delay.
Again.
Always seventeen.
He stared at the screen.
A countdown appeared.
00:16:59
Daniel looked at Richard.
“What is that?”
Richard's face hardened.
“Seventeen minutes.”
“Until what?”
“Until the house becomes inaccessible.”
Daniel didn't understand.
Richard did.
“They built the security system to lock everyone inside if it detected an external breach.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You knew?”
“I helped design it.”
The timer continued.
00:16:32
Anna looked at the twins.
“We need to move.”
Richard nodded.
“There is another exit.”
He opened a second steel door.
A narrow tunnel stretched into darkness.
Daniel grabbed the boys.
“Where does it go?”
“Two miles east.”
“To where?”
“A church.”
Daniel frowned.
“Which church?”
Richard looked at him.
“The church where Lauren and I met.”
Daniel stopped.
“You knew Lauren?”
Richard nodded.
“I loved her.”
Daniel's face changed.
“What?”
“Not like that.”
Richard's voice softened.
“She came to me because she was afraid.”
“When?”
“Six months before she died.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“Because she believed someone inside your company was listening to you.”
Daniel stared.
“Me?”
Richard nodded.
“Your phone.”
Daniel's stomach dropped.
“My phone?”
“Your company-issued phone.”
Daniel suddenly remembered.
The night Lauren had begged him to stop using his work phone around the children.
He had assumed she was being paranoid.
“She knew.”
Richard nodded.
“She knew everything.”
Daniel looked at Anna.
“Why did she trust you?”
Anna looked down.
“Because my mother helped Evelyn.”
Daniel turned.
Richard interrupted.
“Anna wasn't just a nurse's daughter.”
Daniel stared.
“What was she?”
Richard looked at Anna.
“Lauren's biological half-sister.”
Silence.
Daniel felt as though someone had struck him.
“What?”
Anna's eyes filled with tears.
“It's true.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You and Lauren were sisters?”
“Half-sisters.”
“Same mother?”
“No.”
“Same father?”
Anna nodded.
Richard looked away.
Daniel understood.
“Your father?”
Anna didn't answer.
Richard did.
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped back.
“My father was Anna's father?”
Anna nodded.
“Lauren knew?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since she was a child.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“You had another daughter.”
“I didn't know.”
“Don't lie.”
“I swear.”
Anna spoke softly.
“My mother never told him.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn ordered her not to.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
Evelyn's face collapsed.
“I was protecting Richard.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You destroyed everyone.”
Evelyn whispered:
“I know.”
They entered the tunnel.
Richard led.
Daniel followed with the twins.
Anna came behind them.
Marcus and Claire stayed at the rear.
The tunnel smelled of damp earth.
Their footsteps echoed.
Then Jordan stopped.
“Daddy.”
Daniel looked down.
“What?”
Jordan pointed behind them.
“Someone is following us.”
Everyone froze.
Richard turned off the flashlight.
Darkness.
Complete darkness.
They listened.
Nothing.
Then—
A metallic scrape.
Someone was moving through the tunnel.
Marcus whispered:
“Keep going.”
Richard shook his head.
“If we run, they'll know exactly where we are.”
Daniel held the boys tighter.
The scrape came closer.
Then a voice echoed through the tunnel.
“Richard.”
Everyone froze.
The voice was distorted.
But Daniel recognized it.
The same voice from the recording.
The same man who had threatened Lauren.
Richard's face became expressionless.
The voice continued.
“You can't hide him forever.”
Daniel looked at his father.
“Who is that?”
Richard whispered:
“The man who ordered Lauren's death.”
The voice came again.
“And Daniel…”
A pause.
“You really should ask your mother what happened the night you were born.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at her.
“What happened?”
She couldn't answer.
The voice laughed softly.
“Ask her why your birth certificate was changed.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“What?”
Richard grabbed Evelyn's arm.
“Don't.”
Daniel turned on him.
“No.”
He stepped forward.
“I want the truth.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not here.”
“Now.”
The voice echoed through the tunnel again.
“Tell him, Evelyn.”
Silence.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Daniel…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You were not supposed to survive.”
Daniel went completely still.
“What?”
Evelyn continued.
“When you were born…”
She struggled to speak.
“Your grandfather ordered you killed.”
The tunnel seemed to disappear around him.
Daniel could hear only his own breathing.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at Richard.
“Because you weren't his heir.”
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Richard stepped forward.
“You were supposed to inherit everything.”
“That doesn't explain why he wanted me dead.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Because the bloodline was wrong.”
Daniel's voice trembled.
“Whose blood?”
No one answered.
Then Jordan suddenly screamed.
“Daddy!”
A gunshot exploded through the tunnel.
BANG!
Everyone dropped.
Daniel threw himself over the twins.
Anna screamed.
Marcus fired back.
BANG! BANG!
The tunnel filled with smoke.
Richard shouted:
“RUN!”
They moved.
Daniel carried Justin.
Jordan ran beside him.
Anna grabbed Jordan's hand.
Claire pulled Marcus forward.
Another shot struck the wall.
Then another.
They reached the tunnel exit.
Richard pushed open the steel hatch.
Cold night air rushed in.
They stumbled into the woods.
Daniel turned.
The tunnel entrance disappeared behind them.
Then he saw someone standing among the trees.
A tall figure.
Black coat.
Watching them.
The same man from Jordan's drawings.
Daniel raised his weapon.
“Stop!”
The figure didn't move.
Instead, he removed something from his pocket.
A photograph.
He held it up.
Even from a distance, Daniel recognized it.
A photograph of Lauren.
But there was something written across the bottom.
I DIDN'T KILL YOUR WIFE.
Underneath:
YOUR MOTHER DID.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
She collapsed to her knees.
May you like
And when Daniel turned back toward the trees—
the man was gone.
