Chapter 7 - The Video That Jared Never Knew Existed

Jared’s confidence returned quickly.
Too quickly.
Within a week, he hired a powerful attorney.
A man named Victor Hale.
The type of lawyer who walked into a room expecting everyone else to move.
Victor’s first statement was simple.
“This was an unfortunate family misunderstanding.”
Misunderstanding.
That word made my blood boil.
A misunderstanding was forgetting an appointment.
A misunderstanding was saying something hurtful.
A child being struck was not a misunderstanding.
But Victor continued.
“My client maintains that he was attempting to discipline a child who was being disrespectful.”
Discipline.
Another carefully chosen word.
They were trying to change the story.
Not deny what happened.
Control how people saw it.
Ramirez warned me this would happen.
“People like Jared rarely fight the facts first.”
“Then what do they fight?”
“The meaning of the facts.”
And that was exactly what they were doing.
Two days later, Ramirez called again.
This time, his voice sounded different.
Serious.
But also surprised.
“Ryan, I need you to come down here.”
“What happened?”
“We found another recording.”
My heart stopped.
“Another recording?”
“Yes.”
“From where?”
“The Collins family security system.”
I frowned.
“Security system?”
Ramirez nodded.
“Jared’s parents have cameras throughout their house.”
I felt confused.
“Then why didn’t anyone mention this?”
Because the answer was obvious.
They never expected anyone to need it.
The footage was brought up on the screen.
The room went quiet.
It showed the dining room from another angle.
A second perspective.
A view of everything.
Not just what happened to Lily.
But what happened afterward.
The part nobody wanted remembered.
Jared standing over her.
His mother smiling.
The family members looking away.
The moment where nobody helped.
Then came the part that changed everything.
After I walked away with Lily, Jared looked around the room.
And he laughed.
Actually laughed.
“She’ll calm down.”
His mother replied,
“Ryan always overreacts.”
Jared smiled.
“He won’t do anything.”
Ramirez paused the video.
Nobody spoke.
Because the recording proved something the defense could not explain.
Jared wasn’t shocked by what he had done.
He wasn’t regretful.
He wasn’t confused.
He believed he was untouchable.
I stared at the frozen image on the screen.
The same man who had scared everyone for years.
The same man who thought apologies were unnecessary.
The same man who thought money and connections could erase consequences.
For the first time…
he looked small.
Ramirez leaned back.
“This is the moment everything changes.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because now we don’t just have an incident.”
He pointed at the screen.
“We have intent.”
And that was the first time I realized something.
Jared had spent years building a wall around himself.
A wall made of fear.
May you like
But every wall has a weakness.
And his weakness was believing nobody would ever push back.
