Chapter 15 - The Lowest Point

The week after Daniel’s testimony was the hardest week of my life.
Not because of Jared.
Because everything became public.
The story spread everywhere.
People argued online.
Some supported us.
Others defended Jared.
Some people who knew nothing about our family suddenly believed they understood everything.
And through it all…
Lily watched.
That was the part that hurt the most.
One evening, she asked me a question.
“Dad?”
I looked up.
“Yes?”
“Are people angry because of me?”
The words broke something inside me.
“No.”
“But everything started because I said something.”
I walked over and sat beside her.
“Lily.”
She looked at me.
“Listen carefully.”
I held her hands.
“You did not create this problem.”
“Then who did?”
I took a breath.
“The people who made someone believe they could hurt others without consequences.”
She was quiet.
Then she asked:
“Was Uncle Jared always like this?”
I didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth was complicated.
“No one becomes this way overnight.”
I said.
“But people choose who they become every day.”
Then came the moment that almost destroyed our case.
The recording from the first dinner was leaked online.
Not by us.
Not by Ramirez.
Someone released it without permission.
At first, I thought it would help.
But I was wrong.
People focused on the wrong things.
They criticized the family.
They argued about private conversations.
They turned a serious situation into entertainment.
Jared’s team immediately used it.
They claimed we were trying to embarrass him publicly.
They claimed we wanted revenge.
And suddenly…
the truth became buried under noise.
Ramirez called me that night.
His voice was serious.
“We have a problem.”
I sat down.
“What happened?”
“The public attention is changing things.”
“How?”
“The court needs evidence, not opinions.”
I looked at the television.
At strangers arguing about my daughter’s pain.
For the first time…
I felt exhausted.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Just tired.
I wondered if fighting this was making everything worse.
Maybe Jared was right.
Maybe there was a price for standing up.
Maybe protecting Lily meant putting her through even more pain.
Then I walked upstairs.
I found Lily asleep.
Her drawing was beside her bed.
The family with the shield.
I picked it up.
And I remembered why I started.
Not because I wanted Jared punished.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because one day Lily would grow up.
And I wanted her to remember one thing:
When someone powerful hurts you…
you do not have to disappear.
The next morning, Ramirez arrived with new information.
Something he had been waiting to confirm.
“I found where Jared’s confidence comes from.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“He has been protected by someone much more powerful than him.”
My expression changed.
“Who?”
Ramirez placed a file on the table.
Inside was a name.
A name I recognized immediately.
Someone connected to Jared’s business.
Someone who could explain every hidden complaint.
Every missing report.
Every person who stayed silent.
Ramirez looked at me.
“Ryan…”
“This case was never just about Jared.”
I stared at the file.
“Then what was it about?”
He answered:
“The entire system that allowed him to become untouchable.”
And for the first time in weeks…
I realized something.
May you like
Jared was not the final enemy.
He was only the first door.
