Chapter 14 - The Betrayal That Nearly Destroyed Everything

The second court hearing began with something nobody expected.
A surprise witness.
Jared’s attorney walked into the courtroom with a confident smile.
The kind of smile that meant they believed they had something powerful.
I noticed Jared watching us.
Not nervous.
Not worried.
Almost relieved.
That scared me.
Because Jared only looked confident when he thought he had control.
Victor Hale stood.
“Your Honor, we would like to call a witness who can clarify what really happened that evening.”
My stomach tightened.
Ramirez looked at me.
“Stay calm.”
But I already knew.
This was not going to be simple.
The courtroom doors opened.
And Daniel walked in.
My own brother.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Sarah looked at me.
Her face showed the same disbelief I felt.
Daniel avoided my eyes.
He walked past us.
And took the seat beside Jared’s attorney.
The betrayal was worse than I imagined.
Not because he was helping Jared.
But because he knew the truth.
He knew Lily was hurt.
He knew what happened.
And he still chose this.
Victor approached him.
“Mr. Ryan’s brother, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You were close with both families?”
“Yes.”
“Would you describe Ryan as someone who reacts emotionally?”
I felt my hands tighten.
Daniel hesitated.
Only for a second.
But that second was enough.
“Yes.”
A wave of disappointment moved through me.
Victor nodded.
“So would it be fair to say Ryan may have exaggerated what happened?”
Before Daniel answered, Ramirez stood.
“Objection.”
The judge looked over.
“On what grounds?”
“Speculation.”
“Sustained.”
But the damage was already attempted.
That was Jared’s strategy.
Not always winning.
Sometimes just creating doubt.
Then Victor asked the question that changed everything.
“Daniel, did Ryan ever tell you he wanted to destroy Jared?”
Silence.
The entire courtroom waited.
Daniel looked down.
Then he answered.
“No.”
Victor frowned.
“No?”
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
Daniel swallowed.
And finally looked at me.
“I’m here because I was afraid.”
The room became silent.
Victor looked confused.
“Afraid of what?”
Daniel’s voice shook.
“Afraid of Jared.”
Nobody moved.
Even Jared’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
Daniel continued.
“For years, everyone knew what he was like.”
Victor stepped forward.
“But you still supported him?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The answer came quietly.
“Because I thought staying silent was safer.”
That sentence changed the entire room.
Because it was not an excuse.
It was an admission.
After the hearing, Daniel found me outside.
“I’m sorry.”
I stared at him.
“Are you?”
He looked hurt.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you sit beside him?”
He had no answer.
Finally, he whispered:
“Because he threatened me.”
I froze.
“What?”
Daniel looked around.
“He knows things about me.”
The truth hit me.
Jared wasn’t only controlling people with money.
He controlled them with fear.
With secrets.
With information.
The same system we had discovered.
Daniel wasn’t loyal to Jared.
He was trapped by him.
And that was when I realized something.
May you like
Jared didn’t have supporters.
He had prisoners.
