Chapter 2: The Empire Falls

Detectives entered with arrest warrants.

Santiago exploded.

"This is fabricated!"

"You can't prove anything!"

The lead investigator calmly replied,

"We've already obtained your financial records."

His confidence cracked.

"What financial records?"

"The shell companies."

"The insurance fraud."

"The forged psychiatric evaluations."

"The illegal transfers from minority shareholders."

Santiago slowly turned toward his mother.

"You said those documents were destroyed."

Beatriz's expression finally changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

The investigator continued.

"One person inside your company decided to cooperate."

"Your chief financial officer."

"He provided everything."

Boxes of evidence were carried into the foyer.

Computers.

Hard drives.

Contracts.

Original signatures.

Every carefully hidden crime surfaced at once.

The mansion that had once represented power now looked like a crime scene.

Employees watched from the hallways.

Housekeepers whispered to one another.

Security guards removed Santiago's family portraits from the walls as officers photographed every room.

Santiago suddenly dropped to his knees in front of me.

"Valeria..."

"I was angry."

"I never meant—"

"Please."

"For our son."

I looked at him quietly.

"Our son?"

"You only remembered he was your son after you realized you were losing everything."

Tears streamed down his face.

"I love you."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You loved control."

"You loved obedience."

"You loved believing no one would ever stop you."

"But love never leaves someone bleeding on the floor."

Police officers placed handcuffs around his wrists.

He didn't resist.

As they led him away, he looked over his shoulder one last time.

My father stepped beside me.

"You'll never touch my daughter again."

The front doors closed behind Santiago.

The sound echoed through the empty mansion like the ending of a long nightmare.
